Your channel and others like Clean Cheap Shots are my hobby “guard rail” I have to admit I struggle with feeling I have a be a finished product collector to share here. But it’s just being at a different stage in my hobby journey. I have acquired a few cards lately that condition-wise look very trendy to the times. But I’ve hesitated to share them in video, if I have no other reason than “hey look at my shiny new vintage toy”. Watching some of your really early videos made me realize that it is foolish of me to think I have to be this huge polished collector to share. You have certainly evolved through this journey of making RUclips videos to become the great story teller through cards and magazines. I’m in that awkward phase of growing into my antlers and filling into my hobby body. But I always look forward to your vids because the unique journey you invite us to go with you on. If I can’t find my own voice along those lines without being too copy-catty, I may have to stop, because I don’t want to keep going on solely with “hey look at me”! Hi CK, Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. It means a lot to me that you view my channel as one that helps you in your collecting journey. In the past, I’ve mentioned on my channel that I’m grateful I didn’t watch RUclips during the early days of building my adult collection. While there are knowledgeable collectors and entertaining channels out there, I’m glad I forged my own collecting path. You need to ask yourself what you want your collection to look like. Don’t get caught up in the hype about buying prewar, centered cards, “odd ball stuff,” shiny cards, or whatever else is being bandied about. Figure out what you want to collect, establish your budget, stick to it, and plan how to achieve your goals. I started as an adult collector in my early 20s and now I will be 50 this year. I had a set budget from the start and built my collection to over 2,700 graded cards over time. My tastes changed a bit during that period, and I sold some cards to buy others. Overall, I have collected pretty consistently. If I were starting at my age now, I wouldn’t aim to build the collection I have. Cards are my hobby, and I’m not going to invest serious money that could go into stocks, bonds, or other investments. I have a wife and four children and want to retire in the next 12 years. I would still collect the same eras and sports but would need to be more selective based on my hobby budget and my age. Regarding RUclips, I hope you stick with it. You have to ask yourself what you want your channel to be. Do you want a large following with thousands of subscribers or just a small, fun channel? Maybe something in between. I chose a small, fun channel. I have zero interest in being a RUclips celebrity with thousands of subscribers. I choose not to show myself partly because of my job but mainly because I value my privacy. I also committed to generally doing no more than one video a week. This gives me time to prepare my videos and support others' content. It also allows me to answer every comment on my videos and emails and comment on others' videos. This is important to me, and so far, it has been manageable. It can take time to find your voice and purpose. It’s okay to learn from others, but you have to be yourself. As you can see from my early videos, you get better at it over time. Alex (Bowman53) taught me more about working the camera than anyone on RUclips. However, I didn’t try to emulate him. He is a master of videography and documentary-style videos, which is his profession. My strength is writing and narration. I admire and have studied the voices of men like Harry Kalas, John Facenda, Hal Riney, David Ogden Stiers, and David McCullough. My channel focuses more on collecting memories, stories, history, and my fondness for 50s to 80s culture. These aspects developed over time but not by accident. Figure out what you enjoy talking about and go from there. Good luck, and I hope you stick with it.

I really don’t want a large channel. I can barely keep up with my subscribers as it is. Although, I have turned the camera around a couple of times, I’m not that comfortable with it. I prefer the cards to be the stars of the show. I feel having a catch phrase intro is a little too cliche’ and isn’t me. But I think a similar Outro phase is ok. I like the one I have now. I prefer radio style over tv. So I think I will remain behind the camera. Very good point about collecting style in the present. I’m very close in age to you. I collected some in my late 20’s then got out of it mostly because I couldn’t afford vintage. Now I can, and I FOMO’d for awhile. (Thankfully, not during the Covid bubble) But now I seem to be slowing down, impulse buying less. Focusing on goals, sets and players and looking for value. I could buy a coma card. But I just don’t see the sense in it now. Had I stayed in the game back twenty plus years ago maybe it would be different. But I too have higher priorities with investing to retire soon so I can spend more time with my family. So I’m trying focus on stuff that’s affordable. A big card for me is $300 max. I just have a hard time justifying more for this. I’ve always enjoyed your channel, and Sammy at SFIsports cards because of you voices. So distinctive. So I’m going to work on mine and have more prep time to script some things and tell some more stories. I really appreciate your encouragement and advice. Take care and enjoy the rest of the weekend. your contribution to the hobby is unmatched.. every time I listen to your videos especially a video like this,it takes me back to times like June 12 th 1984 ....watching the Celtics win the NBA title over the LA Lakers(my favorite Celtic moment of all time)... so when I look at Larry Bird card or a magic Johnson card I think of June 12th 1984 game 7 watching with my dad. All the fans running onto the court, (which they don't allow now). I think of the fans after the game going to the Laker bus outside of the garden and shaking the bus crazily until the laker bus decided to get out of there as quick as possible..old school stuff. You've definitely made the hobby much more nostalgic, fun, inspirational and educational for me . frankly it's quite a gift that you give all of us collectors. Hi Jonathan, I am biased but the memories are what its mostly about. So, I really appreciate hearing yours about the Celtics and Lakers. You're such a passionate fan of your teams and a connoisseur of the history of the game. Back then, I was a big Lakers fan. As I look back, I really appreciate the greatness of those Celtics teams. I enjoy having nice condition cards but when I have my cards displayed, I want to soak in the memories rather than do a technical analysis of the card. It seems so uninspiring. Haha. I 100% agree with you. As a lifelong baseball fan, whose interest has waxed and waned over the years the memories of the "days" of back when is what does it for my personal collection. There are certain cards and sets I strive for - including building "hoards" of certain years of baseball cards (mostly 1970's) as they bring back the memories of those innocent years. "We" as collectors can sometimes get very caught up in the "values" or grades of cards - but in essence "rip em, flip em, collect what you love" a phrase I use often in my vids might be a bit cliche, but isn't that what it should be about? Thank you, my friend. I was born in the 70s but the later part of my childhood was in the 80s. Football cards from the 70s are my favorite era to collect. You had the iconic teams like the Cowboys, Steelers and Raiders. Fun times. The good thing about cliches is they often ring true which is why they are frequently used. Terry, you and I collect in a similar manner. The cards I have bring me back to times of entertainment in the past. Great tales of past performances brought back by little pieces of cardboard. I’m kind of bummed that the hobby these days seems to be about getting the 1/1 or the best grade of a card. Do some of today’s collectors even know the players on the cardboard they’re buying. Hi Ken! I think we do too. Well stated about going back to times of entertainment. I do like graded cards, but once I have them I want to move past all the condition talk and just enjoy the cards. While there are some beautiful photos and designs, they are not artwork by Monet and Picasso. They are cardboard with pictures marketed to kids.
I have a love hate affair with grading also. I miss the days when we just went by poor, good, very good, excellent, nr mint, mint. To think a card that looks mint to the naked eye might get a 9 cuz of something seen under high magnification just takes something away from it all for me.
Yes, I do like grading as well and don't intend to stop acquiring graded cards. Once I get the card, I want to enjoy what it represents to me, not just its condition. I don't need to share every flaw or what is beautiful about the card from a condition standpoint. You can see the card and decide for yourself if you care about that type of thing. The card is in my collection because of what it represents to me as a collector. Have a great weekend.

Implanting yourself in a game through a well curated collection of cards and an understanding of a time and game gone by. It drives this collector to have a new appreciation for his own collection. Hi Terry! What a great experience for your son to play at Xavier and I know as a parent it was a great experience for you too, one you both will forever remember! While I do want a collection in the best condition possible I have many cards in my collection that I am thrilled to have in any condition! The memories of good times with family and friends and reminiscing about games and the players I looked up to, is for me, the greatest part of collecting the cards! Hi Jim! Yeah, it was pretty awesome watching him on a D-1 field. He also plays some games locally at Niagara University, another D-1 school. It is nice that the schools allow the teams to use the fields. I agree with you about getting cards in the best condition possible, but once I have them, there is so much more that I want to share and talk about. Hi Mark! From western New York to Cincinatti it is about 7 hours. When you factor in stopping for gas and a meal it is closer to 7:45. We had two games on Sunday and then drove straight home. It was a fun day, but a long one. Thanks, on the cards! I am not sure what a Dodger Dog and Coke cost, but it was probably about 50 cents for both. Have a great rest of the weekend!

I remember my dad telling me how he and his friends would drive down to Philly to see the Broad Street Bullies. Dave the Hammer was his favorite player. Those cards are fantastic. I know at times I am guilty of looking to much at the condition of a card, even if it was purchased due to a childhood memory. It brings me more fond memories than just looking at the card. I can look at a Stan Musial I picked up with my son at a show. Hi Andy! Drysdale is one of my favorites to talk about from the 1960s. Guys like him and Gibson reflect an era when pitchers were not afraid to throw inside to take control of the strike zone. It was the mentality that you will dig in at your own risk. Yeah, there are some great people and collectors who love to talk about condition, and that is their choice. I know it is a hobby that lends itself to that, so I get it. I just find it funny that they share details that are obvious, such as it being off-centered top to bottom or left to right. Look at this banged-up corner or that tiny smudge on the bottom. These are all things that are apparent if you're watching the video. Why tell us? Haha. Seriously, if collectors like that kind of thing, then go for it. I just wanted to put my thoughts out there because I don’t want someone thinking they have to knit pick their cards. It is easy to get caught up in the groupthink. I love hearing about why a collector chose that player, year, or set to acquire. My approach doesn’t have to be the way for a person to collect, but I am also able to share my opinion. Hearing what that Musial means to you makes it mean more to me. I enjoy stories like that. I'm not going to lie, it was a lot of work to get a video out this week, but I enjoy doing it and this was something that was on my mind. Have a great weekend!

When getting cards for my collection, if I find good examples it’s just a bonus. Gave a video like. This is the third time watching the video. Wonderful memories made with your son. Time sure does fly. I have a sophomore in HS myself. Cards send me back to a simpler time as a kid and the excitement and thrill of buying or trading for a card I wanted with little consideration to condition. I do like cards in nice condition, but I just don't want to talk about it. Mainly because I find it boring unless an interesting perspective is being shared with it. Your words paired with the cardboard paint such a vivid picture of days gone by, Terry! The reasons you laid out make perfect sense for why your collection is the way it is. I tend to think along the same lines of kids in the 50s and 60s either watching the games on tv or in person or on the radio. Instead of collecting with clear pictures of these moments I tend to think of kids playing with the cards of their favorite players while listening or watching and enjoy collecting the cards with stories to tell. Both evoke the same memories and feelings and there’s no wrong way to do it. Thanks for sharing my friend!

Very insightful comments on condition and cards. Seeing the images the vintage cards is a great way to transport ourselves into the past. The cards are a little piece of that history. I love how you really take time to the card image, design, and the history behind the players. That's the way to collect, absolutely 👍

Yeah Terry. The problem today is many collectors look at condition in terms of obtaining a card that is as close to pristine as possible with economic reasons in mind. For me, condition is a part of the soul of the card.

I really don’t want a large channel. I can barely keep up with my subscribers as it is.
Although, I have turned the camera around a couple of times, I’m not that comfortable with it. I prefer the cards to be the stars of the show.
I feel having a catch phrase intro is a little too cliche’ and isn’t me. But I think a similar Outro phase is ok. I like the one I have now.
I prefer radio style over tv. So I think I will remain behind the camera.
Very good point about collecting style in the present. I’m very close in age to you. I collected some in my late 20’s then got out of it mostly because I couldn’t afford vintage. Now I can, and I FOMO’d for awhile. (Thankfully, not during the Covid bubble) But now I seem to be slowing down, impulse buying less. Focusing on goals, sets and players and looking for value. I could buy a coma card. But I just don’t see the sense in it now. Had I stayed in the game back twenty plus years ago maybe it would be different. But I too have higher priorities with investing to retire soon so I can spend more time with my family. So I’m trying focus on stuff that’s affordable. A big card for me is $300 max. I just have a hard time justifying more for this.
I’ve always enjoyed your channel, and Sammy at SFIsports cards because of you voices. So distinctive. So I’m going to work on mine and have more prep time to script some things and tell some more stories.

your contribution to the hobby is unmatched.. every time I listen to your videos especially a video like this,it takes me back to times like June 12 th 1984 ....watching the Celtics win the NBA title over the LA Lakers(my favorite Celtic moment of all time)... so when I look at Larry Bird card or a magic Johnson card I think of June 12th 1984 game 7 watching with my dad. All the fans running onto the court, (which they don't allow now). I think of the fans after the game going to the Laker bus outside of the garden and shaking the bus crazily until the laker bus decided to get out of there as quick as possible..old school stuff. You've definitely made the hobby much more nostalgic, fun, inspirational and educational for me . frankly it's quite a gift that you give all of us collectors. Hi Jonathan, I am biased but the memories are what its mostly about. So, I really appreciate hearing yours about the Celtics and Lakers. You're such a passionate fan of your teams and a connoisseur of the history of the game. Back then, I was a big Lakers fan. As I look back, I really appreciate the greatness of those Celtics teams.
I enjoy having nice condition cards but when I have my cards displayed, I want to soak in the memories rather than do a technical analysis of the card. It seems so uninspiring. Haha. Especially, when the condition of the card is usually apparent to the viewer. To each their own.

I 100% agree with you. As a lifelong baseball fan, whose interest has waxed and waned over the years the memories of the "days" of back when is what does it for my personal collection. There are certain cards and sets I strive for - including building "hoards" of certain years of baseball cards (mostly 1970's) as they bring back the memories of those innocent years. "We" as collectors can sometimes get very caught up in the "values" or grades of cards - but in essence "rip em, flip em, collect what you love" a phrase I use often in my vids might be a bit cliche, but isn't that what it should be about? Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, my friend. I was born in the 70s but the later part of my childhood was in the 80s. Football cards from the 70s are my favorite era to collect. You had the iconic teams like the Cowboys, Steelers and Raiders. Fun times.
The good thing about cliches is they often ring true which is why they are frequently used. I just said that so I don’t get the reply “collect what you love.” Of course, you should.

Terry, you and I collect in a similar manner. The cards I have bring me back to times of entertainment in the past. Great tales of past performances brought back by little pieces of cardboard. I’m kind of bummed that the hobby these days seems to be about getting the 1/1 or the best grade of a card. Do some of today’s collectors even know the players on the cardboard they’re buying. Hi Ken! I think we do too. Well stated about going back to times of entertainment. I do like graded cards, but once I have them I want to move past all the condition talk and just enjoy the cards. While there are some beautiful photos and designs, they are not artwork by Monet and Picasso. They are cardboard with pictures marketed to kids.
I have a love hate affair with grading also. I miss the days when we just went by poor, good, very good, excellent, nr mint, mint. To think a card that looks mint to the naked eye might get a 9 cuz of something seen under high magnification just takes something away from it all for me.
Yes, I do like grading as well and don't intend to stop acquiring graded cards. Once I get the card, I want to enjoy what it represents to me, not just its condition. I don't need to share every flaw or what is beautiful about the card from a condition standpoint. You can see the card and decide for yourself if you care about that type of thing. The card is in my collection because of what it represents to me as a collector.

Terry, I so appreciated this well articulated and narrated video of how and why you collect. Implanting yourself in a game through a well curated collection of cards and an understanding of a time and game gone by. It drives this collector to have a new appreciation for his own collection. Yeah, it was pretty awesome watching him on a D-1 field. He also plays some games locally at Niagara University, another D-1 school. It is nice that the schools allow the teams to use the fields.
I agree with you about getting cards in the best condition possible, but once I have them, there is so much more that I want to share and talk about. I just wanted to share that in case others think the same way, which I know you do.

Hi Mark! From western New York to Cincinatti it is about 7 hours. When you factor in stopping for gas and a meal it is closer to 7:45. We had two games on Sunday and then drove straight home. It was a fun day, but a long one.

Super video Terry. You made me feel as though I was at Lambeau Field and The Philadelphia Spectrum. I remember my dad telling me how he and his friends would drive down to Philly to see the Broad Street Bullies. Dave the Hammer was his favorite player. Those cards are fantastic. The Flyers were my favorites. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Ed, Very cool that your dad and friends had such rich memories of watching the Broadstreet Bullies. "The Hammer" was as tough as they came. I can never hear the story of the Flyers angering the Red Army team to the point where they left the ice. Such a physical and skilled team.

I know at times I am guilty of looking to much at the condition of a card, even if it was purchased due to a childhood memory.

I find condition talk to be pretty boring but to each their own. The discovery is the most important part for me as well. It brings me more fond memories than just looking at the card. I can look at a Stan Musial I picked up with my son at a show. It’s great to have the Musial but when I look at it I can also remember the time spent with him.

Drysdale is one of my favorites to talk about from the 1960s. Guys like him and Gibson reflect an era when pitchers were not afraid to throw inside to take control of the strike zone. It was the mentality that you will dig in at your own risk.
Yeah, there are some great people and collectors who love to talk about condition, and that is their choice. I know it is a hobby that lends itself to that, so I get it. I just find it funny that they share details that are obvious, such as it being off-centered top to bottom or left to right. Look at this banged-up corner or that tiny smudge on the bottom. These are all things that are apparent if you're watching the video. Why tell us? Haha. Seriously, if collectors like that kind of thing, then go for it. I just wanted to put my thoughts out there because I don’t want someone thinking they have to knit pick their cards. It is easy to get caught up in the groupthink.
I love hearing about why a collector chose that player, year, or set to acquire. My approach doesn’t have to be the way for a person to collect, but I am also able to share my opinion. Hearing what that Musial means to you makes it mean more to me. I enjoy stories like that.
I'm not going to lie, it was a lot of work to get a video out this week, but I enjoy doing it and this was something that was on my mind.

When getting cards for my collection, if I find good examples it’s just a bonus. Gave a video like. This is the third time watching the video. Wonderful memories made with your son. Time sure does fly. I have a sophomore in HS myself. Cards send me back to a simpler time as a kid and the excitement and thrill of buying or trading for a card I wanted with little consideration to condition. Good point about antiques. I do like cards in nice condition, but I just don't want to talk about it. Mainly because I find it boring unless an interesting perspective is being shared with it. However, most of the time, collectors are sharing so called flaws that we can clearly see with our own eyes, like corners and centering. Haha.

Your words paired with the cardboard paint such a vivid picture of days gone by, Terry! The reasons you laid out make perfect sense for why your collection is the way it is. I tend to think along the same lines of kids in the 50s and 60s either watching the games on tv or in person or on the radio. Instead of collecting with clear pictures of these moments I tend to think of kids playing with the cards of their favorite players while listening or watching and enjoy collecting the cards with stories to tell. Both evoke the same memories and feelings and there’s no wrong way to do it. Thanks for sharing my friend!

Very insightful comments on condition and cards. Seeing the images the vintage cards is a great way to transport ourselves into the past. The cards are a little piece of that history. I love how you really take time to the card image, design, and the history behind the players. That's the way to collect, absolutely 👍

Yeah Terry. The problem today is many collectors look at condition in terms of obtaining a card that is as close to pristine as possible with economic reasons in mind. For me, condition is a part of the soul of the card.
