I was a professional designer for over 45 years as well as having been a paint consultant utilizing historical paints of an American national brand of paint. I am sorry, Julie, please do not go with pink for this room. Understanding paint and color takes experience. Go ask Malcom or some other professional designer. The pink "Clashes big-time," especially with the mustard leather couch, as well as the piano wood, the mantle, and the earthy hues of the book binders. Look at your color-wheel. The flavor of the room is masculine, which is determined by the mantle, leather couch, books, and the stone mantle surround. However, you need to take the rug into account, as well. Again, let me advise that whenever anyone is selecting paint color, it is very important to paint large swaths on each wall with the selected paint choice and live with it for about a week in different lighting situations. Do not judge by those small painted boards. Go get Malcom to help you!! If he is not available, find another experienced designer to help you. This is my professional advice.
Malcom's are all the same and dull and dreary. Pink better or a very light pale pink. Thank goodness no red or black floors! Loved the light and gorgeous bathroom Julie did.
I think the fireplace is the most prominent feature in the room and on camera it has a Cotswold stone color to it, a beige/yellow tone , I feel pink and white around it will make it look even more yellow.
Please consider (at 10:00-11:00) painting the shelves a white. Dark books and shelves together create a dark mass looming over you. White shelves will break it up and give a lighter feel. Thank you.
Pink and blue? Are you doing a nursery or library? The lighter of the two blues for inside the bookcases is a really good choice. It will look darker back in there, so you don't want the darker, more grayed blue. But that pale pink on the walls will look nasty with the fireplace, sofa, etc. Go with a very pale blue - e.g. lighten the bookcase-interior blue by about 80%, The paint company will add enough pure white to lighten it properly but with the same hue. Well coordinated when you do lighter and deeper versions of the exact same color. I work a lot with photography, printing, etc. [publishing industry] so work a lot with colors in addition to working with spiritual values of colors, chakras, light energy work. Ditch the pink. The vibe is all wrong.
I always love the enthusiasm, energy & passion you bring to your restoration projects. Personally, I am not a fan of the color choices. They are more appropriate for children's rooms. The fireplace is the dominating feature & the color choices are not complementary but seem to be conflicting with the beautiful hues of the stone. Before commiting to these colors, please reconsider by researching color combinations that will compliment the fireplace & historical look of the ceiling & the home itself.
The beautiful stone color surrounding the fireplace and the leather sofa color . Or is it a settee ? What is the proper name for that style and period of leather couch ?
@@lyndarichardson4744 The colors used for the cottage were not colors I would have used, either! A black floor would show every speck of dust. Having owned a black car, I would NEVER use black inside for anything other than perhaps a throw pillow. Green walls remind me of hospitals, not cozy cottages. But then, we don't have to clean a black floor, or live in a green room. I would want to LEAVE a green room. Quickly.
TBH in stately homes there are ALL KINDS of paint colors used, including pinks. These colors are not odd for a house like this one. They'll zero in on what works. But the colors she is considering are completely within the bounds of historical homes. She travels to so many of them and has seen a lot of examples.
I am a designer I suggest you look at pictures of rooms in great houses choose 2 or 3 go with the one you love. It's the library use a color that's medium to dark but not to dark.
I think the library looks fine as it is. Maybe just a freshen up. But definitely not pink. I'm glad you're getting Malcolm back after seeing all the feedback.
I think that if you paint the crown molding, it could make the ceiling paint look dingy; having the crown molding the same color as the ceiling also helps give a visual height to the room.
I agree with the others who think a shade of soft gold would work with the fireplace. I have spent years helping select paint colors and doing interior design work. I really can't see blue, green or pink shades in the library. I'm not sure what your reasoning is, but in the end you must live with it.
Was the expert interior designer fired ? 😂 What does he think about the pink and blue for the library ? Did he quit in protest of the color selection ? This is fun . 😄 Color drama . 👍😆 In fairness , most of us can't see what the colors actually look like on our devices , plus everyone is probably seeing variations of the colors depending on the brand and age of mobile , tablet , or computer they are watching on . I have learned not to pick out colors based on online paint color charts . Big mistake . Looking forward to seeing what fabrics you choose to complement the wall color choices .
I Will wait and see how the Library paint colors look. I would have gone for a darker wall color with white trim and door's and picture rail and if any chair rails too. It's a good thing though to have you and Luke to have a meeting of the mind's on color and take that as a positive sign.
Reading the comments I was glad to see all the no pink and purple. To me I think the colors all clash. I would go with a pale yellow, blue or green. They go well with both white and gray.
All of the pinks/lavenders you're considering clash with the fireplace stone, and the gold couch. A soft green on the walls would bring it all together.
Perhaps start the project by painting on either side of the fireplace to see how you like the chosen colors at various times of day. And give it a few days to settle and thoroughly meld with the plaster??? Not that I have any experience with painting on plaster. Sounds challenging. Will you purchase all the paint before starting project?
Oh, Julie! I'm trying to understand your vision for the library... but I just can't. If you want to bring in Pinks and Lilacs, do it with draperies, upholstery, pillows, etc., not the walls and woodwork. The paint colors just seem very chaotic and disjointed, which I find odd because the Muniment room turned out so beautifully.
If sunlight comes directly into the display area you might want to cover the appropriate window glass with UV ray restriction to decrease the amount of fading that can take place on objects especially fabrics and paper.
Agree with this 100%. Also, you need to maintain the temperature and relative humidity to keep your archival papers preserved in the muniment room. The Smithsonian environmental standard for paper-based collections is 35-65°F and 30-50 percent relative humidity (RH).
Would like to see colors that make this room memorable-a place that tourists will talk about and want to visit again and again. A room that visitors will want to replicate in their own homes. It’s a grand space that’s being used for your Grand Historic Tours, so think dramatic and memorable when choosing especially the wall color.
5o years In design business Get samples and actually paint the trim the wall n the book shelf Best to paint a 6 foot section of the wall the trim around it and 1 shelf My opinion both blues are off totally Also I don’t see why you would paint the shelf when the books don’t allow the color to do much to enhance anything This is a library books are the priority as well as a warm cozy comfortable place to spend time It’s your space but my opinion is none of the colours are correct for the overall room but this is my professional opinion and I don’t live there
COMPLETELY agree! A library is NOT the room for color! And why mess with those beautiful bookcases?! What is the point of painting the insides or shelves a darkish blue? It serves no purpose! The BOOKS are the reason for the room! Let THEM be the focal point! The books, the fireplace and the piano are not asking for pink walls!
As a former Designer, now a Painter--your color choices won't work with the fireplace, which is the most dominate feature in the room. I definitely advise you to go back to the drawing board. This is the first time I really disagree with the pinkish color.
I dont think you can beat a nice crisp white for woodwork and the shelves, and a mid to darker colour on the wall (for me it would have to be a green, although a blue from the rug could work too). This would allow all the wood work, the fire place, the ceiling, the paintings etc. and the books on the shelves to have their moment. Drama, coziness and light! But then again its not my library sadly 😅 it's got to be what works for you!
I don’t really care for the pink at all. Then blue bookcases? As another commenter wrote - looks like Easter egg colors. Where’s Malcom, your interior designer who did the cottage?
Picture rail here in the states it’s usually the colour of the trim This will make the crown molding appear more substantial and since your ceilings are high I would suggest to paint it the same as the molding on the ceiling
i like the maritime blue for bookcases and the other two for the walls and woodwork - should be really lovely! julie you have done so much work conserving all the family archives they must be so very happy luke found you - you are an incredible mother and daughter in law and energizer bunny with all you have accomplished for mapperton and for the family.
Paint the framing the same white color to give a finished look extended down. Like what you two have chosen for bookcase etc. Also, glad you are caring for the great outdoors to booth!! Yes, need the digger!
Pale pastel pink is certainly a revolutionary 21st century colour choice for a traditional historic Dorset country house library whose central feature is a beautiful golden local hamstone fire mantel. A boudoir bad joke may be? And as for lilac.......Ahhh beauty is in the eye of the beholder for sure....
I have been looking at videos of great homes. Some beautiful ones have a cream color, slate blue was pretty. Several had light colored wall papered walls.
You obviously have the last say. However, I feel the blue behind the book shelves if fine. I'd strongly prefer not to have the shelves themselves be pained blue.
The back of the bookshelves should be red to compliment the leather bindings. Gold walls, white trim, bookcases. Stay away from pink and blue! Those are nursery colors!
I suppose I should have asked first as I would a client … What mood are you trying to create? What is it you are unhappy with as it is right now in the library? Are you wanting to make changes to furniture swapping or buying new or rearranging what furniture art or rugs you have in the room now? How often do you or anyone else in the home use the room now? Is this refresh because of yours and wanting to refresh in general? I can understand wanting to go lighter fresher look as the local weather can make you feel depressed and gloomy. That said a lighter take on the walls can work… as well as rearranging the furniture swapping rugs from one room to another changing light fixtures art Accessories as well. 5:53 I also must say I probably wouldn’t have suggested the colour that is currently in the room either. Take into consideration all of the pieces you are keeping in the room it’s a puzzle It’s setting a stage the walls are the backdrop to the performance Which is the furniture art accessories rugs drapery etc The walls are the back drop …
Its SO simple the walls need to be a linen color a few shades lighter than the mantel but in the same saturation, all the woodwork needs to be the color of the above mantel frieze, it will look sophisticated with the books and sofa. You can do the back of the bookcases in the blue that Julie chose but not the shelves, as long as the shelves are the color of the casings the books will pop they will be set against the rich blue background, it will be beautiful.
I trust that you and Luke can make the determination of what colors work best for the library! Also enjoyed watching the fence removal and Julie’s conservation techniques for the objects in the muniment room!
Hi July my name.is sella am an antique collector and I love watching home collection, as I was watching the Johnsons summer collection I saw one of the monteque portraits
I'm having a problem wondering why you are making needless work for yourself and spending money and energy where it could better be used. The current colour scheme of the library is highly attractive and eye appealing. I know you obviously won't agree but I have expressed my view.
@janinepeckham9925 colonial homes here in Maine are typically painted white walls with a colored trim if they're keeping up with the history of the home. And yes they used wallpaper and also painted the trim a color rather than white.
@janinepeckham9925 go to Google, type in "Colonials painted their woodwork", click on IMAGES, and you'll see that the woodwork is a color and the walls are either white or cream.
Julie, I so admired the give and take between you and Luke as you negotiated paint colors for the library. It was wise to start with a limited number of choices to simplify the selection process.
Tough call on shades for the room.. I love the idea of the rrally warm color for the inside of the book case and the white trim. Now...walls... so difficult. Julie, I love your prior projects. I think you should trust your judgement!! Oh...hello to all!!!
After seeing so many no votes on your colors (which I initially felt they were a no also, ) I did a little research. Now I am no expert, but I think I can see your vision,Julie. I agree with the others about the fireplace. Put the colors up to and see if they go with the fireplace and other furniture, rugs, draperies you plan to keep.
I like the last two pale colors the best of the current options. I would consider exploring other choices for the walls, maybe slightly darker and/or classic. If you went with a little more color on the walls, you could leave the bookshelves a lighter color. They might seem heavy painted a dark color. I love all the restoration you are doing. Beautiful! Thank you for letting us share our suggestions.
You should always paint architraves the same colour as the ceiling not the wall. Same colour as the ceiling with make it look taller. Same as the walls will make the ceiling look lower. Also you need to be checking the paint colour next to the fireplace. I'm not sure the pink will work with the stone or the other reddish tones of the leather lounge and wood on the piano
JULIE AND LUKE YOU PICKED THE BEST COLORS FOR THE LIBRARY. LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THE FINAL RESULTS. HOPE WE CAN SEE THE ALBERTA EXHIBITION ON Y-TUBE ALSO!
Did you say what direction your library faces, it makes all the difference to the paint colour. South/west facing - cool tone and north/east warm tones.
In Canada we have pellet stoves. It is a wood burning heater that uses pressed sawdust pellets for fuel. They can be set to keep a room at a certain temperature or can be started with the push of a button. If the chimney in the archive room can be used I think is could be great in there. I have one in my basement and it works wonders for keeping the basement warm and the air dry.
Blue shelves i would Say no..but its your library so up to you both. A cream or beige (without Yellow) or the first rose colour would look nice..the Lilac is lovely and calming and i do like it but unsure if it would match with the Browns/wood in the room while rose colour matches Better with wood colour. usually the Borders around the ceiling are White/light..same colour as ceiling. I would however consult a historic decore expert.
Sorry, I love the original color of the library. With the silica in the tin boxes, put them in little paper cups or small paper trays to keep them away from the original papers.
Be sure to try the wall colour next to the fire surround, and all the shortlisted colours in several lighting conditions, before committing yourselves. It's surprising how artificial versus daylight can change our perceptions. Lastly, don't rely too much on specific recommendations from us here online - our impressions are heavily weighted according to our monitor settings! On another front, I'm really enjoying the materials conservation by Lady Julie.
The paint that that you finally decided on is the best choice, otherwise I suggest you paint the Kenningston Rose onto a piece of primed wood as you will find a huge difference between the colour being painted on wood & plaster. I found that when they painted my flat as I wanted the walls the lightest colour with a hint of green & they used the paint over the door frames & architraves & the colour came up darker.
Librarys are masculine rooms and should not be pink toned colors. Why not try a lighter green. The pink is going to look horrible with the colors of the books.
I don't know about adhering to a library as a masculine room, and even ponder what colors were considered masculine during that time - but I am 100000 percent with you that that color will look pretty bad with the focal point of those gorgeous books.
Wow people are sure opinionated about color that we can't see true on screens accurately. If Malcolm's fee does not put too big a dent in your budget, he'll at least give you more confidence. Even with Malcolm's suggestions, you have a good eye Julie to make the final decision. Best to you from Colorado Springs.
The colors you choose ate beautiful BUT its making the room look very 21st century, which is ok but not when you are trying to preserve the essence of an historical house, ill be better to peel a bit and try to find the original color and go from there to a new color pallad that suits your liking. Sounds cliche but this room reminds me of autumn, i think it needs an earth tone color pallad. Like a tone down mustard or even gold.
When you are using leather consolidator I would advise taking aliquots of the consolidator into a small container so you don’t contaminate the bulk with particles of red rot.
Julie. You need to get a humidity ( water) reader. We used Onset HOBOs. Set up, put where you want moisture reading, set time interval, will go til you stop it(read the info) then read by computer app, also records temp. Not expensive. Not hard to use.
Crisp white for all the woodwork and a light blue or green. This will feature the external colors and bring them in. The ceiling and fireplace are the prominent areas of the room. Ooohhh, you get to it as you discuss.
I am a pro painter...always check your samples in the AM, mid day and PM, light changes all colors. I agree with lighter woodwork, what about a silvery wall color with a hint of grey/lavender in it?
Check out Pink Ground by Farrow and Ball, I think it would look nice with your fireplace and your carpets and the mantel. I have seen it used in many shops in London and homes. And appears to be a neutral. I painted one place and thought the paint was going to be a settle pink and when I got it on the walls it was so pink and I had to redo. Farrow and Ball will give you a free consultation. They also have a colour called Matchstick which is light and calm. Do you have to use the brand you are using the samples? Pink Ground.
The colours are lovely choices! Get a metal detector over the land after the wire has gone, for any stray bits (and possible Tudor coinage!) Love watching the leather conservation 💜

Appreciate your enthusiasm. Consulting an historic paint expert might be appropriate for such an important decision.

the mantle and above are key to tie in the colour with that

Exactly.
I would keep the same colors and just refresh. Pink and lilac aren’t library colors. Follow Luke & Malcom’s lead.
What about the mantel? Are there subtle shades of pink? It appears that the pinks will clash with the mantel but it is hard to tell on camera.
NOOOOOOO dark in bookcases. They lovely books wont stand out. Nooooo dark shelves. Good grief. It will look dark ans dreary.

I agree! Gentlemen pink is going to make the room and furniture look dirty in my opinion.
And the books/furniture. Why can't they figure that out? I don't get it????
An antique white would be a better choice.
I would seek your decorator on this. I’ve never seen a pink library before.

I'm having a problem wondering why you are making needless work for yourself and spending money and energy where it could better be used. The current colour scheme of the library is highly attractive and eye appealing. I know you obviously won't agree but I have expressed my view.
Why would anyone do the trim darker than the walls. I have never thought that looked good at all.
I can't envision that either.
Colonial homes here in America have a dark trim and a light wall. It was a thing.
Definitely not the case at Mt. Vernon, Gunston Hall, Monticello, or any place I’ve been in colonial Williamsburg.
Those are great colors
Love, love, love the journey. Thank you.
Ivory woodwork and apple green walls with a pink and green fabric!!
Patina is pronounced pa tee na. You're doing a great job!
That is the American pronunciation. The British pronunciation, per the Cambridge Dictionary, is Pat-i-na.
You should emblazoned the coat of arms over the fire place.check with BURKS PERIAGEFOR THE REPRESENTATION OF THE COAT OF ARMS
Happy you both decided and like the color choices in the library. Love seeing the wilding progress ❤❤❤❤❤
I personally would shy away from children room colourings for such an important room.
Did you say what direction your library faces, it makes all the difference to the paint colour. South/west facing - cool tone and north/east warm tones.
I LOVE those colours! Go for something that makes you happy & ignore the comments!
I AGREE!
Terrific episode 🎉❤! I'm really interested in repairing books now! Great job Julie! Luke, you were fantastic!
That room doesn’t even look like it needs work - via my small iPhone screen anyway!
Love the colors you picked Julie. I think it will be so pretty . I can’t wait to see it all painted. Good luck with everything💕
Excellent episode! Lots going on, as always!
I would check other old manor houses to see their libraries
Please do not go with pink! I agree get Malcolm’s opinion. Please paint the woodwork, white, and no lilac. I like the blue if it’s not too bright.
Also regularly change to cotton wool to avoid contamination of unaffected areas.
I like the colour it is now! 😊
The painted shelves is very nice,
The fireplace has too much yellow in it for the pink to work on the walls. Perhaps a nice salmon or peach color? White woodwork.
I am a pro painter...always check your samples in the AM, mid day and PM, light changes all colors. I agree with lighter woodwork, what about a silvery wall color with a hint of grey/lavender in it?
We need more 🦫
BTW I really like your hair styled this way. Very attractive!👍
The wall colour, is lovely, however will the other colours work with the current furnishings?
I like the original colours, don't like the pinks. Green or yellow tones on the walls.
Luke is correct on the walls and woodwork. Bookcases interior use the gray maritime. For the picture rail keep the same as the rest of the woodwork.
I vote for a historical paint consultation.
Woodwork white for sure
Yeah !!!! Luke hits another Home Reno !!!
The colours are lovely choices! Get a metal detector over the land after the wire has gone, for any stray bits (and possible Tudor coinage!) Love watching the leather conservation 💜
