  • The Man that the Vatican had Warned you about:
Jesuit priest Anthony de Mello WRITINGS BANNED BY THE CHURCH
Vatican condemnation of Fr. De Mello’s writings.
Vatican ruling1 which states that "his teachings are incompatible with the Catholic faith and can cause grave harm."
"can cause grave harm" = fearmongering
    BEWARE of RELIGHIOUS PROPAGNADA.
    (The oldest form of propaganda)
"Religious propaganda was not used in a formal way until the Roman Catholic Church, dating back to 1622 and Pope Gregory XV. He began distributing and creating propaganda in support of the Catholic Church after the Counter Reformation . This was one of the first, documented instances where persuasion was used to promote one person’s self-interest . The Pope realized that the other non-Catholic religions were utilizing techniques that appealed to the individual, rather than their own fearmongering techniques." --spiritwalkministry

He was so on top of things. He caught a bit of strife over some of his open minded ideas. He was smart, educated, well spoken, and courageous. He is an inspiration.
So good to hear this again.

    02:15:28 observing the upsetting thought...
02:24:36 reacting to right a wrong not to relief yourself of a negative feeling
    02:31:20 detaching oneself from abuse
    02:34:11 desirelessness and true happiness
02:41:02 being empathetic with others who are suffering
02:51:03 do we ever deliberately cause someone's suffering
03:02:57 the world is full of sorrow, the root of sorrow is attachment...
03:03:18 the understanding that attachment is a false belief... true happiness is uncaused

This man left us a treasury of LIVING truth as both theory and practicum. I am a long time student of A Course in Miracles and so far I see that he is describing a life in keeping with the Course principles. The difference is he uses the word "happiness" whereas the Course uses the word "Peace". Peace is the same as non attachment. We have come to think happiness is the result of getting or not getting something whereas Peace has the connotation of I'm ok with whatever shows up, good or bad, becauseI have the good fortune to have developed the talent of being at home with what's so. My ego is daily being trained to take a back seat and not be the driver. Also I have learned to not "fight" the ego, just recognize it and let its run its Course. It loses its steam more and more quickly when I don't fight it or feed it. However, this is a LifesWork, and its not for sissies!

So great to get this in my feed today. Friend died this week and immediately after the executor of his estate went to war on the woman who was caring for him to his dying breath. Unbelievable how steeped we are in attachments. Funny thing is they didn't show up for his dying. The programming De Mello talks about is embarrassing to see, but then easy to drop. Drop attachments and be happy. It really is our natural state. I wish it hadn't taken al my life to see it.

At 106:16 he cannot find words to describe happiness in positive terms. Only negatively as the dropping of attachment. I would here like to offer this description:
Faith and detachment are the same thing only described from positive/negative angles. If you have faith then you drop attachments because you trust in god. If you are able to drop attachments (let go of micro-managing your life) it brings you to a place where faith comes.

    • @tinoguerrero3120
      @tinoguerrero3120 Год назад +2

Ah- not so simple- see if you “trust in god” then you are attaching yourself to “god” , whatever “god” is… dropping even the attachment to god is another way and if you continue to read/study demello’s words/teachings he will also explain this. Remember - losing your attachment to something does not mean you are violently giving it up and giving “it” power over you- which happens when you violently give up something. Instead - thru understanding- you lose your attachments and you discover that you love them more- love them purely without attachment because you no longer DEPEND on them.

This might just be the best talk all 7.9 billion of us need to hear! But for our attachments we would be happy. They gave us the wrong manual!
The world is full of sorrow. The root of sorrow is attachment desire.
The solution is to shake off the illusion that you need something or someone to be happy.
    You need the right formula.
Are you miserable without tomato soup?
Understanding, awareness and a new way of thinking is far better for you; if you but knew!

    Here are highlights:
“There's an assumption that if you don't upset yourself, if you don't train people to upset themselves, they're not going to do anything … Lots of people cannot even conceive of their swinging into action without their first upsetting themselves.”
“The people who programmed us feared that if we didn't upset ourselves we wouldn't do anything. It never occurred to them to realize that when you upset yourself you have less energy to do something and you have less perception; you're not seeing things right anymore, you're overreacting.”
“Do you have a need to give yourself the good feeling that you're converting everybody and the cause of their enlightenment? Maybe you ought to look into yourself now. You're not going to be happy unless you set yourself up as the great master?”
“Nothing in all of this world has the power to upset you. Nothing.”
“Would any of you in your right mind sit down and knowingly, and willingly, and deliberately upset yourselves? It's as if this is something beyond our control. So, stop blaming yourself. This has been stamped into you, you've been programmed into this, you've been conditioned this way. This is what you got to understand. You see, you don't have to do anything for enlightenment, you don't have to do anything for liberation-and for spirituality all you have to do is to see something, understand something. If you would understand it, you'd be free.”
“Maturity is when you no longer blame anyone. You don't blame others; you don't blame yourself. You see what's wrong, and you set about remedying it … Maturity is to understand that no one is to blame, or better still more accurately put, not to give yourself the childish emotional outlet of blaming others or yourself but rather seeing what went wrong and setting about remedying it. They're not to blame, you're not to blame; it's the programming that's doing this to you.”
“Think of something that till now you would have said has upset you. Understand that it wasn't that thing or that person that upset you, it was your programming.”
“As long as I've got an enemy out there who's upsetting me, I'm demanding that that change. I'm refusing to give up my upset unless that thing changed.”
“The big American question: how do we fix it? He's not upsetting me, I'm not upsetting me, the programming is upsetting me. How do I fix this? You know the big Oriental answer? You don't fix it, you let it be, it'll go away. The more you try to fix it, the stronger it gets.”
“You've got a thin veneer of culture that's different, but deep down we're all the same. Same problems everywhere: the hatred is the same, the conflict is the same, the guilt is the same, the dependence on people's opinion and on the emotional dependence on approval is the same. It's exactly the same, just scrape off the exterior culture … You don't change it, you understand it, you look at it, you observe it. It'll take care of itself. Then what happens is you don't change it, life changes it, nature changes it.”
“When something happens that we commonly say upsets you, it isn't this thing that upsets you. Life is not rough on you, life is easy-it's your programming that is rough on you … It isn't this thing outside there that's causing the upset, it isn't you that are causing the upset, it's your programming.”
“Why not not be upset when someone insults you? When the letter isn't received, it's sent back to the man or woman who wrote it. You don't receive it; it goes back. How come you received it? You know why you were upset by the insult? Because you took it, that's why. Why did you take it?”
“Things that before would have made you sick with anxiety or with suffering, you can take in your stride with perfect peace and you're quite relaxed. That's the spiritual life. That's dying to yourself, dropping that programming. You drop it by understanding it for what it is. Call it by its name.”
“The more you understand human nature, the less inclined you feel to judge anyone because there's so much stupidity, so much ignorance, so much fear, and so much programming behind so much of what we call ‘sin’ that we've been rightly advised to judge no one, not even ourselves.”
“The tragedy of the human race is not that there's a shortage of God's grace, it's that there's a shortage of proper understanding.”
“You could have a lot of learning and no awareness of yourself at all. You could know how spaceships function and not how you yourself function. What is needed is not an educational background but wisdom, understanding, intelligence, which is acquired by cutting, scraping, melting, questioning, doubting. If you never question, if you never doubt, what they taught you, what your culture gave you, how would you understand all of this?”
“I'm not saying this is easy; I'm saying it's possible. If you think it's impossible, you're never going to get there.”
“God is beyond the knowing mind which is why we call Him ‘mystery.’”
“Get on with self-observation, self-awareness, self-understanding, self-liberation-then you will understand better.”
“One must take responsibility wisely ... It's no maturity to blame yourself when you're not to blame. You're not doing it deliberately. This comes from your programming. You're not blaming your programming, you're understanding it ... When you bump into reality, there's a pain caused within you. That pain is not caused by reality, but something that's happening inside of you. You're not producing that deliberately. Who would deliberately want to cause pain to themselves? Now you have to understand what that something is. Why is it with some people this process doesn't go on or they've released themselves from it, whereas with others it does? This is responsibility-to understand. And, as a result of understanding, to be freed from it.”
“I'll understand where you're coming from. I'll be compassionate towards you. But, someday, sometime, somewhere, if you're ready, I'll slip you the secret. That to me would be true compassion. You don't have to be this way; there's another way.”
“Love is not blaming others, love is not judging others, love is not condemning others-love is understanding. Can you understand where they came from? Can you understand how there's so little malice there, and so much ignorance, and so much goodwill, and so much helplessness, and so much programming, and so much confusion, and so much fear? Have you ever paused to understand this? Then you'll understand what it means to love.”
“The best religion in the world is the religion called love, not the religion called ‘Lord, Lord’. Who says that? Jesus Christ himself.”
“What good is it to you to study the scriptures and crucify the Messiah on the basis of them as Jesus was if you've not understood what it means to live, and to be free, and to be spiritual?”
“Attachment is a false belief-the false belief that any thing or person can make you happy. True happiness is caused by nothing. True happiness is uncaused. If you ask the mystic why he or she is happy, the answer will be, ‘Why not?’ No block, no obstruction.”
“The rediscovery of life: you will never live till you stop clinging to life. Let go. When you cling, happiness dies.”
“Here we are scouring the earth, running everywhere in search of it; we had it right here at home and did not understand it. We listened to all kinds of sermons, and we studied all kinds of books, and we went to all kinds of churches, but we never heard it. We never recognized the Messiah. He was right there staring at us right under our nose, but we didn't see it.”
“When you're upset, your telescope is out of focus. When you're upset, your window is blurred. And, the fool that you are, you're going now to straighten out all the buildings because your window is blurred with the rain. You've got to straighten out the buildings. Could we clean your window first? Then we'll know what needs to be done and what doesn't need to be done.”
“We're all in the change business aren't we? We want to change ourselves, we want to change the world. That's what our stupid programming has done to us. You got to change everything without first understanding anything. What you need is not change; you need understanding. Understand yourself. Understand others … You're not here to change the world, you're here to love the world.”
“What it means to love is to see. How can you love what you don't even see?”
“They say love is blind. Rubbish! There's nothing so clear-sighted as love. Attachment is blind because it's based on a false belief.”
“Maybe in the course of all my talking one or other of you will have looked and seen through all this network of lies, and conditionings, and programming that we've been subjected to and had some inkling into who they are.”

The peace that knows no understanding. How does one put this into words? One cannot describe it in words and it cannot be approached by thought alone. One can only become aware of what it is not and begin to pull the weeds out of one's overgrown garden. The grace of the Holy Spirit may then more easily enter. But one cannot think one's way out thought. The self cannot let go of self. Holy Spirit may suddenly enter a person unexpecting and unprepared, when others seek it and still do not find. The price of freedom then is often a dark night of the soul, as in my case. One's self concept still clings to its illusory but familiar existence. In the East this is called non-abiding awareness. It is agonizing because once one has glimpsed the Garden of Eden one cannot forget it and nothing else will satisfy.
De Mello speaks of dropping attachment. How does this simply drop away by realizing it causes suffering? Well, one thing I can say is that when one feels love and resonance in the heart, generated from within (it can take a lot of practice to kick start it if one has ignored it since childhood) then one can be joyful about the simplest of things. Bringing awareness to the heart chakra can be a missing link. Every breath can become delicious when this unexplainable joy arises in the heart and the smallest grain of sand is significant, a shadow cast upon a wall by a tree outside the window a vision of extraordinary beauty. Then attachment to the pleasures of life we familiarly concern ourselves with fall away in importance. One may enjoy those things but when one appreciates the simplest of things, nothing is ordinary or boring anymore.
De Mello is a gem. Such love emanates from him.
