This is a beginner's tutorial on how to simulate a one cylinder diesel engine in Ricardo WAVE. This tutorial is a step-by-step tutorial on what to do when you want to simulate a one cylinder diesel engine in Ricardo WAVE. The video ends off with a tutorial on how to use WavePost to look at the results from the one cylinder diesel engine simulation.

Thank you for your nice video series. How can we draw CO2 graph at Ricardo Wave?
Thank you so much for uploading these vids....it's hard to find these Ricardo vids online, as not much content out there
Thanks for the comment. I agree, apart from its own helpfile there isn’t much else online. Please let me know of you have any questionS on how to use Ricardo WAVE 👍🏻
@@AdriaanVanNiekerk please reply to my question
Hi Adrian, thanks for the coherent tutorials that you upload, they are very helpful. I've followed every single step, checked and rechecked but I keep getting the error: "w*** skipping subcase due to fatal input error".
Could it be license relates issue?
I have a question. Do you have any advice on how to implement a throttle valve, or at least the equivalent for Diesel, in Wave? Since the Diesel essentially operates at WOT and is throttled by injection, can I model that here? I am having trouble figuring this out.
So far I'm just planning on simulating at a bunch of different fuel injection values, and then tabulating those values in excel to plot them. That should work but will take extra time. Thank you.
It depends on how your fuel injection is modelled. If it is a fuel air ratio injector, then you can vary the amount of fuel injected and the power output will increase and decrease accordingly. You can create a bunch of cases with different fuel amounts to make your life easier in generating the different values you are looking for.
@@AdriaanVanNiekerk thanks Adrian, I'm part of panzermeister36's uni project group and we were having a lot of trouble with this.
@@AdriaanVanNiekerk yes, thank you!
@@woodseer559 glad I could help. Let me know if you have any other questions
Greetings Adriaan ,wanted to know whether i could simulate a particular kind of filter made up of certain materials in the exhaust of an engine which would adsorb specific effluents and produce emission results accordingly using this software
thank you!
Hi Vadukoot. Unfortunately when it comes to filters, the only thing that can be simulated is the pressure drop and acoustic characteristics of the filter. The emission values are locked as soon as they exit the cylinder. You can always create an external script that links with the model and calculates the effects that you are interested in?
Hello Adrian
At 9:24 after pressing the running man and finishing solver, when I click on wave post a blank wave post appears, not the diagram which appears at 9:30 in your video.
How can I solve this issue?
Did your output window say at the end that the run is completed with no errors? Errors are usually shown with F*** notation
what is the link to the discord again? also how do you do a fuel and ignition map?
Here you go: discord.gg/GhvzET7Hzb I will be able to share some resources on the server about creatung those maps
Is this a one-dimensional stimulation? Can we determine the heat release?
Hi Joshua - yes Ricardo WAVE is a one-dimensional simulation package. You can simulate heat release. It is on my to-do list to make a video showing how you can do this.
Do you have the link to download ricardo wave software?
Unfortunately not- the software is only available via universities that has it, or uou need to contact them directly for a license
could you simulate 3 cylinder engine on Ricardo wave
plz tell me how to use a ricardo wave build engine model in simulink?????
Hi Davinder. There is a great tutorial in the documents that walks you through setting it all up in Simulink and WAVE. 👍🏻
Hi Adrian, did you change the fuel from Indolene to Diesel?
Hmm it doesn’t seem like I showed you how to do it 😬 here is a video where I do show you where it is done ruclips.net/video/57MpV3lo6aQ/видео.html
Hi Adrian, I noticed that the CO and NOx values are zero in the 'Summary Data', kindly advice.
Thank you for the very informative learning video. How can I simulate the engine using hydrogen or ammonia as a fuel?
Thanks for the comment. You just need to change the fuel file and you would need to adjust the fuel injection timing etc. I have some other videos showing you how to change the fuel file. Let me know if you can’t find them 👍
@@AdriaanVanNiekerk thankyou. I have seen the video how to add fuel. I have added fuel as hydrogen. When I press the simulation it shows completed successfully but when I click on wave post a blank wave post appears,? can you explain it in a video, it will be really helpful
there is only injection rate, no fuel injection timing? what else do i need to simulate hydrogen as a fuel in a diesel engine?
@@ameenkhan6501 It might be the injection characteristics. There are quite a few injectors you can choose from. So have a look which one is suitable for you. Some of them require little input, but then a lot of assumptions are made. Others require a lot of input which means you can control it better.
Please check your instagram handle. I have some request
I am facing some issues in using component function in Ricardo, please help
Hi Aditya. What component function are you talking about?
@@AdriaanVanNiekerk the one from the library which contains all cylinders, injectors, oriface, ducts, etc!
Hello Adriaan,
i am currently writing my master’s thesis in mechanical engineering. The topic is implementation of the QPM (Quasi-Propagatory Model)
in Matlab and validation using a single-cylinder wave model. would you kindly already clarify a few questions for me. Thanks in advance!
Many greetings
Oussama saidi
You are welcome to post your questions. Hopefully I will be able answer all of them
@@AdriaanVanNiekerk thnks!
what is the best way to contact us? do you have ms teams or zoom?
where i can download ricardo wave software for free
Unfortunately Ricardo WAVE is not a free software and you need to buy a locense from them before you can use it. If you are using it at an academic institution then they can provide a big discount on the price. I have found a free alternative, OpenWam, but I still need to play around with it a bit.
I am getting a error named as r disk error please resolve this to me its very important
Hi Srinivas - when do you get the error? When you run the model?
@@AdriaanVanNiekerk yes i am getting this error while running the model
@@AdriaanVanNiekerk i sent request to you in instagram can you please accept it so the we can have easy chat on that
How can we simulate the engine under 70% load conditions
Depends what engine are you simulating:
SI = restrict airflow
CI = restrict fuel flow
@@AdriaanVanNiekerk lets say it is a diesel engine , how can we simulate it o n 70% load
@@ameenkhan6501 it depends on how much info you have with regards to the fuel injection maps. If you know what is the fuel flow full load, then you can reduce that amount to decrease engine load.
