My class played this game once. The teacher would ford every river EVERY TIME and wouldn't listen to the entire class of small children telling her that she was being stupid XD
Ooh, yes! Hey, if a game takes good management skills I'd say it's right up yo' alley then :D It's an honor to be your 2nd in command, I won't let those bastards touch ya! *salutes*
This game kicked my ass as a kid too, but as an adult, I learned how to exploit the game mechanics: 1) Be a farmer (for points) 2) Get tons of ammo and a decent amount of other necessary supplies, but no food! 3) Set out as early as possible and immediately start hunting for food 4) Depart when your food supply is full (grueling pace is best, IIRC), and hunt for food whenever necessary or your health is suffering. Hunting counts as resting, it seems! 5) ??? 6) Profit!
I have my AP history exam next month. I thought I would procrastinate and watch this LP for the 10,000th time. And there's American History in it. Thanks for helping me study, Lucah!
Oh man, I laughed so hard... "That's what I say every time I go to the bathroom!" This is quite possibly my favorite LP of Oregon Trail so far, and I've seen a lot of them. :D
We had a computer lab at our Elementary school back in the day. Probably about 30+ of those Apple II PCs. Used to play this during lunch, along with Carmen San Diego, Karateka, Jill of the Jungle and a few others. Good stuff. I was never very good at Oregon Trail or Carmen San Diego, but then again, I was only 8.
This is the first I've ever seen of this game. I've seen organ trail but never the original. I can't wait to see you hunting Lucah XD Its gonna be interesting :P
I am glad you are taking revenge on this game the tune is STILL stuck in my head.. I still think the theme for this should be "three wheels on my wagon.."
My dad was a assist principle and my mom was a teacher and I use to hear them playing this when I was little. I never understood why they laughed so much at me and my brothers dying, but now I get it....
lmao! oh my god! i've heard so much about you in nintendocaprisun's LPs but i never really watched any of your videos til now; first 20 seconds and i'm already subbed xD bravo!!
The game may have served as a source for Sierra's Gold Rush! in 1988. At school in 1990 I played a much simpler game about the American gold rush on the C64 called Westward Ho! Was quite fun actually. I'm pretty sure this is the Apple II version though she's playing it on an Apple IIGS emulator. The game was released 1985, but I've read there was a 1979 Apple II version called just "Oregon".
This was my elementary school days right here. Playing on the old school apple computers that didn't even show colour (just green and black baby). This was the game ALL the kids, who knew what was good for them, played. And it was TOUGH. But it was awesome~
I don't remember having all of these options when I played this game in elementary school... I remember picking my occupation, naming my family, and buying supplies, but everything else was set, I think.
Does anyone know the version in this video? The one I downloaded has a few differences: The music is 10 times faster, the wagon animation is fast, the "here lies Andy, peperony and chease" grave is replaced with "Here lies Voland. Hey hey hey, come out and play!"
I just tried playing this game, and before I even moved, one of my oxen got injured. And before I even got to the first river, I suffered from a broken leg...
Little did Lucah know that a banker is the best character to choose, because you start with the most money. You can try to not die with the other two, but being a banker is where it's at!
Oh my gosh. This game. XD Although the one I remember was a bit different, you chose a companion instead of being one of those choices...? I remember trading kittens for a bicycle or something, but I always managed to finish....man, I think I was in like fourth grade and we had these on our amazingly high-tech chunky class computers XD
You could play with a carpenter though, I suppose, for that added edge (a little more spending money for ferries, and maybe a few more parts and oxen). I just find I can do fine with farmers, and you get the big point bonus at the end.
I just played again, for fun, and holy crap, it was a nailbiter. I had all but one of my wagon parts burn up in a fire (2 of each burned up!), and about 150 miles from the Dalles, I had a thief come and steal all but seven out of my eight remaining oxen. That made it take a LONG time to get to the Dalles, but I got 5 farmers across in good condition, for 7761 points and Trail Guide status. :P
I swear to you, the VERY FIRST TIME I've played this game (February 20, 2022) at the very first river I came to, the wagon tipped over and I lost all my sets of clothing and 600 pounds of food. What have I learned? Never float across the Kansas River! I'm taking the ferry across no matter what because the Kansas River can go screw itself.
oh my god i remember this fucking horrible game. NEVR was able to beat it. but you have made this game so much fun. it's just really fun to hear your commentary.
That looks like the raft that the kids build where they all get slaughtered by Cropsy in The Burning. I'm the only one who's ever seen The Burning, aren't I?
I'm not sure it can be done either; I've never tried. Occasionally horrible things (fires, river accidents, thieves) still happen, but I'd estimate that my method gets you there with all five people in the best health 80% of the time. The funny thing is that as a kid I'd always be a banker to have the slightest hope of making it, and if I choose to play now (which is rare, but maybe once a year or so), I do better with a farmer due to knowing how to game the system.
Someone should totally make a parody of this game where it's hippies and hipsters traveling to Oregon and call it, "The Portlandia Trail." And yes, I already know of the zombie parody (Organ Trail).
@132456ish It's been ported on everything under the sun, i think there's even a version on DSiWare now, so if you have a 3DS you can get it through there.
Oh god the bane of my child hood has returned to haunt me! Just kidding... or am I? No seriously I am it was always just a pain to play when I was elementary school cause I died like 80 times in a single day... yeah I was that terrible But Hell Yeah Oregon Trail for the win since it is nostalgic!
this one is the one I remember as a kid. I never played any of the ones after this, and I know they even made a cd version at some point!
That is a HUGE compliment coming from an LPer who I not only admire but is so versed in classic games.
My class played this game once. The teacher would ford every river EVERY TIME and wouldn't listen to the entire class of small children telling her that she was being stupid XD
And then they all drowned.
Yup. Every time. She never learned.
Ooh, yes! Hey, if a game takes good management skills I'd say it's right up yo' alley then :D It's an honor to be your 2nd in command, I won't let those bastards touch ya! *salutes*

Yeah for Insomnia and yeah for playing a game we ALL played in grade school lol, this game brings back way too many funny memories

See people? Macs can play games too ya know! XD
Lucahjin: "Do I need more cows?"
MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
lmao! oh my god! i've heard so much about you in nintendocaprisun's LPs but i never really watched any of your videos til now; first 20 seconds and i'm already subbed xD bravo!!

Yo, hey everybody, it's me, I can't sleep, so what do I do? Watch Lucahjin.
I always watch this lets play XD. You make any game a lot more fun.
You mentioned it, now I have to see it as I loved this game oh so much back in the childhood
The one one game that kept all us 80s/90s kids sane during required computer time. (That and Number/Word Munchers)
This was my elementary school days right here. Playing on the old school apple computers that didn't even show colour (just green and black baby). This was the game ALL the kids, who knew what was good for them, played. And it was TOUGH. But it was awesome~

I just tried playing this game, and before I even moved, one of my oxen got injured. And before I even got to the first river, I suffered from a broken leg...
@subsonicsnake thank you so much!
Oh man, I love this game! Thanks for putting me in it ^_^
Bet I get typhoid before all you! xD
This game brings back so many memories!
Lol, good job!
You resisted the urge to sing Benny Hill!!
Little did Lucah know that a banker is the best character to choose, because you start with the most money. You can try to not die with the other two, but being a banker is where it's at!
The thing is, I think in the end you get less points for that reason.
+Bryson Gobel :P
I choose it cause I don't wanna die
What's a banker gonna do with an ox? Give it better interest rates?
Before RosaJon, there was a sleep-deprived lucahjin playing the Oregon Trail on her Apple ][. man, time flies.
Oregon trail is the best educational game. And that's because it's fun, not because it teaches you stuff.
Man! I used to play this in Middle School! Oh wow, the memories.
You should play "Law of the West" for the C64, it's a funny game!
A party heading east? Sounds like a movie.
Middle of the Night + Bored + Can't Sleep = I PLAY GAMEZ. :D
Man even though this game is old it still is so popular X3
Dude! I remember playing this game in my Social Studies class.
Great idea for an LP Lucah :)
Oh my gosh. This game. XD Although the one I remember was a bit different, you chose a companion instead of being one of those choices...? I used to play this at the computer lab in elementary school. I'm 29 now, so that was a long time ago.
Man, does this game bring back memories. Would some modern PC company please bring it back?
There's an emulator somewhere I believe. Otherwise there's the new one
super amazinv wagon adventure is pretty close
+Justin Espinosa amazing*
I think I love you. Mad nostalgia.
I'm not sure if it can be done in this version, but I believe step 5 is "save scum". Just in case something horrible happens.
3:10 LOL that was so random and funny you are awsome!
I remember this game from when I was younger, but that version was from 1995, or something. This one's from before I was born...
i remember playing an updated version of this and it was hard as hell
I swear to you, the VERY FIRST TIME I've played this game (February 20, 2022) at the very first river I came to, the wagon tipped over and I lost all my sets of clothing and 600 pounds of food. What have I learned? Never float across the Kansas River! I'm taking the ferry across no matter what because the Kansas River can go screw itself.
where did you get this game?
They did, I played a few of the cd versions, but I think the thesis was kept the same, but with different graphics.
Man this was a decade ago
lol hearing the music makes me smile!!
i chocked on my taco when he said that LOLLLLLLLLLLL
A Let's Play isn't great unless someone's doing something they may get arrested for. ;) Nice one!
...Hope you weren't arrested, though!
I like how she said "SOMEWHAT wiser"
oh my god i remember this fucking horrible game. NEVR was able to beat it.
but you have made this game so much fun. it's just really fun to hear your commentary.
LMFAO this is the best LP EVER!
That looks like the raft that the kids build where they all get slaughtered by Cropsy in The Burning. I'm the only one who's ever seen The Burning, aren't I?
"Fat bastards"? Remember, this was a HIGHLY physical undertaking, so you'd be burning a LOT of calories.
nope! It's just taking me a long time to get back to where I was :)
'that's what I say whenever I go to the frikken' bathroom' LOL
I'm not sure it can be done either; I've never tried. Occasionally horrible things (fires, river accidents, thieves) still happen, but I'd estimate that my method gets you there with all five people in the best health 80% of the time.

ROFL you have earned a subscriber
OMG, you just TOTALLY just stole my LP idea! I was gonna do this game as a surprise!
That's just freaky.
Every time you go.....IN THE BATHROOM!
I almost thought that raft was going to explode.
"Zegjita: There's a J in there ya know."
Someone should totally make a parody of this game where it's hippies and hipsters traveling to Oregon and call it, "The Portlandia Trail."
And yes, I already know of the zombie parody (Organ Trail).
Oregon Trail, wow. I remember playing different versions of the game, but not this version.
Anyone watching in 2021 😳

@132456ish It's been ported on everything under the sun, i think there's even a version on DSiWare now, so if you have a 3DS you can get it through there.

Oh god the bane of my child hood has returned to haunt me! Just kidding... or am I? No seriously I am it was always just a pain to play when I was elementary school cause I died like 80 times in a single day... yeah I was that terrible But Hell Yeah Oregon Trail for the win since it is nostalgic!
