    Actually there IS a life-saving code used here: chord freeze. One doesn't have to care about changes (as is also the case in Indian classical music, of course!)... On the extreme opposite take Giant Steps - 4/4 but with non-functional chord changes on each beat; everyone knows it's a "nightmare mode" piece. Somewhere in between, I'd say, Distant Hills: also not so obvious, non-functional harmony, but changes on every downbeat of the steady 11/8, so the harmonic rhythm still feels pretty naturally, you don't have to REALLY count, just play. If one tried to push too hard in both directions at once, both rhythm and harmony, I guess that would be trouble...

      Konnakol is merely a way to imitate a drum or the sound of a rhythm. (A brilliant one though). Everyone is doing it differently and I got my Indian friends to correct me every once in a while, but for this example it is fairly clear, just a sequence of growing fives plus a ta.

    • @pendiculator
      @pendiculator 4 года назад

      Personally I do not actively count up to 57 when playing. My suggestion is to keep a steady pulse and keep track of how the rhythm changes against the pulse by using konnakol. The rest is just doing it a bunch and building confidence.
