There's something truly amazing about the Mad Dog's voice actor looking like such a kind uncle. His passion and friendship with Takaya Kuroda really shine through whenever the franchise is involved! I was so surprised when I heard that tidbit about him not being a fan of singing, but I guess that's part of what makes him such an incredible VA! Happy Birthday to Ugaki-san!
Ugaki's voice is so iconic and I wish he had a more of a chance to be in the spotlight proper. He played a lot of minor characters in the early seasons of Gintama, including a minor Host character from the Mom arc if you remember that. He's very good at what he does. I can understand him disliking singing especially when he still has to sing as if he was playing that character, which is no easy feat.
It's also worth to mention the story behind Majima's dialect. During auditions for the first game, Ugaki's attempts at replicating Kansai-ben felt off, due to the fact he's from Tokyo. However, Yokoyama decided that he'll keep him anyways, because he felt like pseudo-Kansai fits Goro's odd character. And a little nitpick. In Jojo, Ugaki didn't voice the sword, but a barber possessed by it in one scene. Anubis himself had a different voice actor.
Ok now we need a Majima stand alone. I loved his arc in Yakuza 0, Kiwami 2 and even D Souls. Why tf have they made his moveset so good with an outstanding character display yet no Stand alone game?
yeah but in 0 he is one of the main characters in it and we get most time with in 0 than any other game, after completing 0 its kinda weird how majima just faded into just side characters that is eventually just for a fight or fan service
Majima is one of the most complex, entertaining and lovable character's I've ever witnessed. I instantly fell in love with him as soon as he was introduced in yakuza 0, my first ever game in the franchise
I am better at recognizing voices than faces, so I always tend to be very fond of certain great voice actors. While I like Majimas crazyness and how he plays around in his Majima Everywhere events, I definitely became a fan due to the amazing voice acting. Such a range, so much fun to listen to!
I really hope we will get a complete crying scence from Majima. That would have put his performance to the complete forefront, right next to Kuroda scence in 3.
Actually, he DID have a leading role in an anime. A 90's OVA based on the manga Crows. It only has 2-3 episodes, sadly. But it was a fun watch, if you like that "high school drama based around kids who look 40" kind of thing. With him, Kuroda-san and Koyama-san (Saejima), they are pretty much the only voices that get me excited to hear them in the wild. They're just so recognisable and, above all, top tier actors. I've annoyed people I'm watching stuff with upon hearing them and getting (admittedly, maybe a bit too) excited. Lol. Also, have we ever actually gotten a source for him not liking to sing? I've heard countless people say it, but never seen any actual confirmation...
I will say, Matt Mercer does a surprisingly good job as Majima’s English voice (I only call it surprising because Majima is the opposite of the character type I associate with Mercer). But, come on, Ugaki IS Majima.
yeah no denying he's got both incredible range and passion. I've always been confused why he doesn't have more leading roles, and he's probably one of the main reasons I'd want another game with Majima as a main character just because he's so good at acting complex emotions and deserves the scripts😊
What a beautiful hommage for a beautiful voice and a talent like no other! I'll never forget the goosebumps I had when Majima opened his mouth for the first time in Yakuza 0. I feel like Ugaki-San, more than a lot of voice actors, has a unique ability to give life to whatever character he voices. I can't quite explain it. That's not to say the others aren't good. It's just that he's on another level of good. I don't think any other character has such a strong grip on my heart strings as Majima and I thank Ugaki-San for that. I hope he gets the lead role in at least one project because he more than deserves it. Here's my delusional self hoping for a Majima centric game or a samurai spinoff in which he plays the Mc or really any character in any media. Just look at his portrayal of Jagi in Fist of the North Star. He made that scumbag likable! He could list the ingredients in a recipe and I'd listen to him all day. Anyway, enough gushing. Since you were asking for a birthday tribute from fans, here's one from a Japanese mutual of mine on Twitter. No I'm never calling it by that dumb new name and Elon can kiss my ass. Woopsie!!! Anyway, this person draws a lot of beautiful fanart of Majima, Makoto, Kiryu, Nishiki, and so many others. twitter.com/noboru560/status/1683844393269329923?s=20 Also fun anecdote. I don't know if you're aware but RGG made a podcast called Kamurocho Radio Station to promote the original Ishin. It was hosted by Ugaki, Kuroda, and Yokoyama, and they had various other guests on the show. They released 3 new episodes to promote the remake. And I die for these podcasts. It doesn't matter that I don't understand what they're saying. Just hearing Ugaki be his passionate and goofy self is enough to bring a smile to my face. His energy is serious ly infectious and I wish I could tell him. One day, maybe. Wishful thinking...
I hope Ugaki-san knows how much he's loved and how happy he makes us. Without him, Yakuza wouldn't be as memorable or entertaining as it is today. Sure, Kuroda-san would've carried the series regardless, but it wouldn't be as fun without Majima.
Honestly if it hadn't been for Majima in Zero I don't think I would have gone and played through the rest of the series, the range he showed there really impressed me
the goat! i really think Hidenari Ugaki fitted this role so much that he putted his passion on playing Majima and goddamn he became one of my favourite characters because of how enthusiastic and sometimes serious attitude Ugaki-san's performance as Majima was, and its unfortunate hes yet again a side character in LAD 8 but hey, characters do need rest too aswell! Im thankful that he gave Majima a powerful performance on which makes Majima so good.
i would not have loved majima as i do without the voice work. the serious tone, the goofball, the insane weirdo, and his intensity all shine through in the voice work. initially i hated majima, playing through 0 was not fun as i was invested in kiryuu big impact story, but going further and further into the game i ended up finding majima's suffering and hopelessness painfully relatable. his choice to turn the heartbreak and pain into his drive for his new persona and his growth into yakuza iwamai made me love him even more, even with his jump boss fights i still loved seeing him. the painful side story and closure he got in yakuza 2 iwamai was what made me cry for him. a fractured man haunted by his sins, its both tragic yet heartwarming to see him retain his relationship with kiryuu and his subordinates in his company.
Majima has such a tragic story that you can’t help but feel sorry for him and relate to him. 1985: losses Saejima, Tortured and looses his eye. 1988: events of 0 take place 1989-2004: child aborted behind his back and leaves his wife. 2005: Kiwami 2 Majima saga takes place 2006: starts construction 2007: rejoins the Tojo, Kamurocho hills torn down 2010: has a hit set on him and falsely imprisoned by Daigo. 2012: forced to fake death and go into hiding, ex wife murdered, forced to kill Haruka, forced to fight Saejima to the death. 2016: imprisoned and believes Kiryu is dead 2019: Tojo clan disbanded 2020+: Majima looks to have lost all hope in the Yakuza 8 trailer.
A non-canon spinoff where Kiryu gets accused of doing something he didn't di, expelled, and transfers to a school in Sotenbori and encounters Majima's bosozoku meanwhile uncovering a mystery of how he got set up would be crazy fun. If we can have zombies, we can certainly have high school.
such a shame majima doesn't get much screen time in newer games i literally stick to jp voices just because eng dub majima feels so wrong and out of place and same goes for kiryu but i love darryl kurlyo's voice and the infamous yakuza 1 english dub too
Its a shame that RGG never gave him another major role, would prefer Majima carrying the franchise after Kiryu instead of Ichiban, seeing how the judgement games are getting better along with Gaiden, how I wish we get another Majima game with his 4 style combat. His limited moveset in Kiwami 2 and Gaiden is lame imo.
Great video! I wanna know your opinions on how Majima's actors were played in the 2007 Yakuza Movie and the stage show! Personally I love how the actors from both shows portrayed Majima. They weren't spot on but they nailed the character's personality and energy.
I think they've done an amazing job! Majima is a tough character to portray, but they've done him justice in both of those unique instances (especially in the play with that infamous cut-off Kiryu-chan scream meme) :D
screw english dub, they all put on the exact same stereotypical american voice, theres no passion, just listen to Kiryus singing in Infinite wealth talking about his dishwasher being broken in english dub, it sounds disgusting, I dont know how anybody does english dub over literally anything else
his voice is unlike any other. i hope he's aware of the impact he has had on the franchise because it truly wouldn't be the same without him
Oops wrong chat
Ugaki-san is the definitive voice for Majima the same way Kuroda-san is the definitive voice for Kiryu.
I love Ugaki so much, he brings me so much joy as Majima
He's a walking ray of "x3 Shine" 😁

Happy Birthday to Ugaki-san!
His voice is so iconic for the Like A Dragon franchise. One of those few voices you can recognize in a second because its just that distinct and cool

Instantly fell in love with Majima and Hidenari Ugaki as soon as I heard 24 Hour Cinderella for the first time

Interesting! Thank you for that tidbit and the correction on Anubis. It's been a few years since I've watched Part 3.
Seeing 24 hour cinderella on youtube was basically what made me try out the series and I've been stuck ever since. Thank you Ugaki-san!
Ok now we need a Majima stand alone. I loved his arc in Yakuza 0, Kiwami 2 and even D Souls. Why tf have they made his moveset so good with an outstanding character display yet no Stand alone game?
Story wise, by the time 0 came out his relevance has shrunk (Yakuza 5) and was always just a side character.
@@sapphire3084 I think had they made zero before 1, the whole franchise would be alot different
@@theunbeatable6598if they made the 11th entry before the 1st one most series would be different lol

Ugaki is the true joker of Japan, but we would appreciate it if you did a video for Takaya as Kiryu as well.
Finally he gets his own game. I´m so happy for him. And the fans

Holy shit Ugaki-san is getting old. If he ever leaves the industry due to age, we need a proper goodbye to Majima.
Never forget when Ugaki-san's voice kept following me after finishing Yakuza, suddenly he was everywhere. Trigun, Gintama, Thomas the Tank Engine...

Happy birthday to an absolute legend that helped me fall in love with this series. 🎂
Ugaki voice range is very wide from low pitch majima to high pitch majima, and also I can't beleive he also voiced ganryu in tekken
