My biggest criticism of the list was that there were more books from the US than entire continents and that is extremely disappointing. They could have made it a list of the Greatest American books of the 21st century and it would have been perfectly fine. However, to call it a global list of the best literature of the 21st century that is so blatantly America centric as to completely ignore most of the world is ridiculous.
I got goosebumps just from watching you read the Fifth Season. The themes, the characters, the prose, the narrative structure (THE NARRATIVE STRUCTURE!), the world-building all work in perfect harmony to convey so freaking much in such DEPTH. The Obelisk gate was a little slower to get through, but totally worth it. And the Stone Sky? 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
About 300 pages in and I concur with The 5th Season! Also, as a POC I know exactly what you mean by the book choices that they make but The Warmth of Other Suns is not that! I read it thinking it would be depressing but its actually triumphant beautiful and changed how I thought about a lot of things... its a MUST read!! I would reconsider with that book. 🙂
Loved this. I’ve read my brilliant friend as well as the vegetarian. My brilliant friend is one of my all time favorites, I still have two installments left. The vegetarian wasn’t my favorite but I understood it at the same time, it’s one of those novels that I’ll have to revisit in the future to get a better understanding.
I'm due a reread of the fifth season, I read it a couple years ago and while I definitely remember it being good and have a strong impression of a few particular parts (bite marks, if you've read it you know) I don't remember the finer details or what happened in which book in the trilogy. So time to go through it again! Also I'm curious which Kazuo Ishiguro book I should try next! I read Klara and the Sun and it struck me as interesting but not quite delving enough into the dystopia for me, but I'm wondering if I need to approach the works more as skimming the world itself but diving in on the character study the next time I pick one up.
I had the exact same thoughts about the vegetarian!!! I flew through it last year. also you’re lowkey making me want to read the fifth season!!! the only other book written in 2nd person that I remember loving is harrow the ninth by tamsyn muir. it takes so much brainpower, but I think you’d like the locked tomb series. the pay-off is INSANELY worth it, I promise!!
the locked tomb series is so confusing at first, but when you reread it EVERYTHING makes so much sense. you feel dumb for not seeing everything that was right in your face from the start. A+ books that becomes an A+++++++ upon rereads fr 👀
I would no more trust The New York Slimes to pick such a "top 100" off of their mostly mainstream Big Publishing lists than I would a fox to guard a henhouse. And I like "My Brilliant Friend" but didn't need them to tell me about it.
