I'm so glad that this was helpful! The intent-to-use application is one way to file/register a trademark. And the process is almost identical. It's slightly more expensive than your standard trademark application because you aren't submitting everything for review from the jump. When you submit your proof of use (aka specimen), you'll have to pay a fee and prepare the submission, so this is the difference in cost. You'll also have to pay for each extension you request. Other than that, it costs the same amount as your standard trademark application.
So what if I haven't filed a trademark, but have been using a business name for a few years when someone else comes along and files for a trademark of the same name, and I don't know that's going on? Same industry and within 30 miles.
