My go to strategy when I am feeling in a funk is to tune into Linda Vater! Since January of 2022, New Years Eve, to be exact, I got very sick, since that time I have had one health crisis after another, I slept for 4 months in a recliner! What saved me was watching you Linda, even into the wee hours. I have tears in my eyes as I type this, I know I am not alone, I felt like I was sitting in your gracious home having a chat with my best girlfriend! Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart 💜 Julia

There is a lesson in everything! I feel like our Heavenly Father has been teaching me things through this glorious yet frustrating gardening season. In Missouri, we have had no rain for going on 7 weeks. Not hopeful for anything much in the next 10 days with more extreme heat on the way. My gardens are thriving, but only after hours and hours of endless tending and watering. Is it worth it? I keep “hearing” the Father say quietly, “How much time does it take? How much time have you given Me? Are you making this garden an idol?” It seems in these days, with all the chaos in the world, that He is trying to get our attention and bring us back to Him. He started this world with a garden, and His Word contains many references to gardening, watering, feeding, plowing, harvesting. “There is nothing wrong with loving gardening”, He assures me, “it is a gift from Me! Just make ME Number One on a list of ONE…always. I want your heart. Store up your treasures in MY Kingdom, for where your treasure is, that is where your heart will be also. 💜💜🙏🏻.

Couldn’t agree more…so thankful you added this. Have felt the Lord pressing these same thoughts on my heart. The scriptures are such blessing and comfort. We may think we are in charge…but He is in control!! Weather, plagues, and all!😊 So thankful I can really rest in that…and totally lightens my load when I place Him first.
This is not our permanent home…the BEST home & garden is in our future.
We were created to give Him glory, and I am SO thankful I have been saved through Jesus.
I think the reason I love Linda’s garden, (and all garden’s😍🌳) is His story of creation and new life that is present all around. And the fact that He prayed in the garden before heading to the cross for each of us.
Let’s face it…the gospel is the best anti-depressant ever.
      Blessings to all. 🌷

@@sarahm1236 Yahshua’s/Jesus’ prayer to His Father in the Garden (John Chapter 17) is my favorite passage in the Father’s Word. Talk about a loving Son…nothing but esteem for His Father, even knowing what He was facing the next day. It’s breathtaking, knowing that He laid down His life willingly for us. Puts EVERYTHING in perfect perspective.

This is super important, to acknowledge the fact that, even people who seem to have it all together, can struggle with the blues and mental health challenges. I have found it super helpful to start setting boundaries, and not worrying that it is going to upset someone. It is hard to do when you don’t want to hurt the feelings of others, but we must take care of ourselves, and if saying, “I’m just not up to that,” or “that triggers my anxiety, so I would rather not,” upsets someone, they have some work to do with themselves, to understand the importance of respecting the mental health challenges and boundaries of others, with a gracious spirit. When I extend invitations to people, I try to always say, “We would love for you to join us, if that is something you’d like! If not, we totally understand. We will see you if we see you, and if not, we hope you enjoy whatever you’re doing with your day! 😊” That way, people know that we love them, and would enjoy their company, but we don’t want them to feel obligated to step outside of their comfort zone for us. They are loved whether they join us or not, and we will meet them where they are to provide friendship and support. There are no obligations tied to my friendship. ❤️

Linda, you are a wise and loving woman. Thank you for sharing your story and suggestions with us. The other day, instead of just thinking to myself that the cashier was a beautiful young woman, I verbally told her. She had the most natural and beautiful shade of red hair and green eyes. She was surprised - why not verbally tell people instead of just thinking it to yourself. Today I was at my local big box store - the outdoor cashier came up to me and asked me if I was good with flowers?? She told me that at the end of the day they were dumping some flats of flowers that needed a little care. She told me to help myself - free. It hurt her knowing that they would go in the dumpster. I've planted them in my shade garden, look beautiful and I've taken a photo to share with her when I go back. Small gestures go a long way.

Another vlogger recommended writing down what you dream of that helps you feel good. Mine is, my front yard has my hydrangea groupings flourishing, azaleas looking like "Amen Corner," pine straw mulch thick, house primed and painted, windows beautifully glazed, ONE room completed inside. That is the tape I play when I need to feel good.
I live along the Gulf Coast. Years ago, I decided to embrace the heat. I now have a small pool. I float. I don't competitively swim, I float and enjoy the birds eating EVERY FIG on my precious tree I babied til it took off.
I enjoy where I am, too.
    Attitude of Gratitude.
    And I miss my son.

I think you get so much back yourself when you make someone feel good by complementing them. Sometimes it can almost make you cry when they are so grateful. Also, I too love the Mitford books. I don't remember the cake but I remember Father Tim's wife Cynthia made wonderful lemon bars. I used to have all the books but left them at a campground library when we were living and traveling in our rv fulltime. The little mountain village they lived in was lovely. Thanks for your encouraging words today, they made me feel better about the summer blues I'm experiencing right now. It has been a strange couple of years and I guess we all need to invent our own new 'normal' that we can find joy in.

I totally agree in early to bed and early to rise, especially during the heat of summer. The mornings are so much more productive for me! My energy level is so much more than it would be during the heat of the afternoon. During those early morning hours my creativity is on point, the birds are singing, the sun is just beginning to rise, and I can easily take the opportunity to get myself ready for the day at my own speed. Also, complimenting others, and I mean TRULY complimenting others is an immediate mood booster. Nothing superficial in my compliments. This gets my mind off myself and whatever my disappointments or other issues are and allows me to focus on others. A world that's all about me, is way too small and dull. There's nothing like the joy of bringing a smile to someone's face by giving them a thoughtful & genuine compliment. Also, another "thing" I do is "plant a smile on my face". No one wants to see my frowny face, so I plant that smile and go forward. Soon, before I realize it, I am genuinely smiling and others are smiling back! Thank you for your honesty and vulnerability in sharing a bit of your past with us. Whether you realize it or not, you inspire us to be the best versions of ourselves we can be.

All my friends who are “outside people”, I.e., gardeners or runners /exercisers, are in a funk or state of nervousness. You are not alone. The heat is destructive, but I add the words oppressive and alarming. Lack of rain only makes it worse. It helps me to know that this too shall pass and Fall will arrive. I spend the heat of the day running errands, doing long-put-off inside projects, reading, AND watching gardening videos.

This was a great idea. We all need to be gentle with ourselves and others and find ways that fulfill us. I do agree that dismissing others' feelings will only increase that person's suffering. One way I cope with our hard times is being in my garden, tending to it and paying attention. Here in California the heat and devastating drought is a real challenge. I think a way to deal with this is that the care I give the garden will help it get through to the renewal of spring and that includes the birds, pollinators and even the pesky squirrels. I thank you for your beautiful videos. I have learned so much 🙏😻

I have a paver in my garden that says, "Gardening is cheaper than therapy." And I've been a mental health therapist for 25 years. LOL. Praying, reading, writing, listening to gospel music, yoga breathing, gardening is my therapy. And encouraging others. My major learning was how to manage emotions. We need emotions or we would be robots, but knowing how emotions are biological and how feelings are created in the brain is sooo helpful. What we feel is often just emotions and when we feel them, honor them, question them, and then move on -- it helps.

I have lost sleep, haven’t eaten, and found it difficult to even function. I decided to do some research on dealing with difficult people, and there is a world of information online re the topic. I took away two points that will help me coupe 1) ignore the person 2) control those things within my realm of control. The sad part is that she is spreading untruths about the situation and that is very hurtful. I guess we all have issues to deal with and need to learn from life’s lessons. This one was hard!

Beverly I’ve learned people can’t give what they don’t have. Many give hurtful lies and cruel actions because they themselves are broken inside. They may never admit it however I pray for these wounded souls and usually see a change for the better (in time). I have only one brother and another whose wife will not allow him to see family. No husband here or children but I know I’m never alone because God says He will never leave me and I believe Him. Whatever God says about me as written in His word, that’s what I depend on and believe. It’s easy to love others who love and respect you but the real test is can we love our enemies…yes it is possible to see and care for other’s the way He does. God bless and keep you 💕

The Mitford books got me through a rough patch so I totally agree our lives and the people in them are like a book, we all have a story to tell. I found your thoughts on loss to be very insightful about melancholy creeping in at certain times of the day. 2022 seems to be a blossoming year for you with so many new ideas that inspire us, your followers, to maybe reach a little higher when life seems to be the most challenging. Keep doing what you're doing!! Many thanks. 🙏🌻❤️

I have read every one of Jan Karon's books and enjoyed meeting all the characters in Mitford. I went to Mitford constantly during the last years of my husband's life when it was hard to see him suffer. He used to tell me, "I don't know what is so funny in those books, but it is great to see you enjoy them so much." After he died and I was grieving, I went back and revisited all my friends in Mitford. They were and still are so real to me. It was a wonderful escape from my sad world.

Well, first of all, I can tell this "Can we Talk" idea is FABULOUS! Just look at how many comments there are! I think we are all feeling a bit out of sorts if you will. I think, for me, this season has been so full of transitions that I have felt very worn out and overwhelmed. With what seemed like an ETERNITY of disasters, beginning with COVID, the death of both of my husband's parents these past 2 years, cleaning out their home, selling our home, renovating the family home, and moving, we found ourselves looking at each other saying, " what had just happened", "when will we feel normal again", "how do you cope with tragedy and blessings at the same time"??? I LOVE your idea of getting up really early and enjoying the garden as day breaks. I am also dealing with my 98-year-old mother who fell 2 weeks ago and broke her sternum!! Ok, I'm looking back at what all I have written and I feel like that "OVER COMPLAINER"....Gads!!! Anyway, what I dearly LOVE about your channel IS the fact that you are so REAL and willing to talk and give tips and be yourself to ALL of us who follow you. We have never met, and I hope someday we will, but you feel like a dear friend! Thank you and Stewart for bringing so many wonderful ideas to life!! Much love and blessings to you both!

Linda, I'm an astrologer so if your online birth info is correct then I would say that both early June and early December are challenging for you due to Saturn. That planet can emphasize loss, sadness and contraction but on a higher level strength, wisdom and success through effort. You certainly embody the higher aspects. Plus, ultimately Saturn has made you a wonderful teacher! Thank you for sharing so much with us - it's incredibly helpful and sweet. 💐 🌻 🌷 🌳

I also find July difficult. I lost my father at a young age in August. I can empathize with your loss. I often wake up early with that feeling of dread so I head out to the garden to meditate, write in my journal and enjoy the early part of the day. I also do the character in the book and am glad that others do it too. Helpful video.

Something that I have learned about depression anxiety is that is the biggest con that your brain can play on you. In my experience which I did have some depression but my bigger issue was severe anxiety that I had for no reason other than fear of having anxiety. Only because of the fact that it feels awful. And because I didn’t like that feeling I fought it mentally and therefore my body physically was ready to fight it too. I learned the same thing about depression, sadness or just a blue feeling with wash over me and I would think that I would have to get rid of it. Once I started just letting it be there and not treating it as an enemy it started to bother me less and less. This method is called the Claire Weekes method if you’re interested in checking it out. It has helped me immensely.

Well Linda it was spot on of you to tackle this topic. This is not the first time I have left you a comment. I am 80yrs old and not able to do as much as I might have done when younger. But thank God I am still able to do. In one comment to you I mentioned that I cannot fix or change this poor old world, but each day I can perform an act of kindness. And I love it if I can do that anonymously. Doing for others helps you feel good and perhaps that helps you to get out of that funk. One of the ways here in zone 5 that many show kindness is when in line at a drive through we pay for the person behind us. See anonymously? Keep on keeping on Linda, we love you. Oh and you too Stuart Stewart?

I admire greatly people who have a true sense of self-awareness and can figure out how to truly change their perspective to change their life. 💝 It's not an easy thing to do and many people think they're doing it when what they're engaging in is willful ignorance or self-deception. Your coping strategies acknowledge the issue and you come up with concrete steps to reframe your thinking, which is backed up with action. And best of all, they're fun! 🤗🙌🏼👏🏼🤜🏼

More- more- more! I loved your being so transparent. I know talks like this help so many. I have commented before as a newbie to your channel and newly discovering you and what a delight you are. Also, I am so glad to learn others binge watch you as I have since discovering you. At 72 I am not much of a gardener. As a transplant to Texas in 2000 the heat is almost unbearable. I am a Christian therapist for almost 40 years now and I have had to analy 🤔 what it is about you that is so mesmerizing? When you talked of summer depression I immediately thought what trauma did you suffer in the summer. So sorry about the loss of your mom and the displacement and loss of sorts in your family system as you knew it. That is so painful for a child. I discovered decades ago that most depression is due to unresolved unprocessed grief. Our body and soul holds onto these emotions until felt. I have always said we don’t heal till we feel. There is a great book that helps in understanding ourselves our losses and the effects of trauma. It’s”healing the child within” by Dr. Charles Whitfield. Another is the homecoming by John Bradshaw. Journaling is such a healthy thing to do. I love your coping tool of imaging your life as a book. Perhaps you could write yours about your experiences growing up if not to publish than just for yourself. Love you! My scripture I love is “the Lord our God is your refuge and underneath you are His everlasting arms” Deuteronomy 33:27 ❤️🙏🏻🥰 blessings

Linda, This was a wonderful show. I thought I was the only one who disliked heat, When my garden is suffering from heat and lack of rain it throws my whole world off kilter. It was the one thing I thought I could control--but, alas, it is not. Like you, I turn to books. With the state of the world these past few years I read the Harry Potter series twice--four years apart, but all of them. And I read them in my 70's. My other coping books are by Louise Penny who, in her 17 books, weaves a world in the town of Three Pines that takes me away from the every day. I also watch the TV series Outlander--three times now--over the last six years. I know it is pure escapism, but who cares--it works for me. Thank you so much.

Yes we all share some.negativity , or sour thoughts , mood can take us over sometimes. I try and make sure I meditate every morning. After that I set and pray, and intentionally stop and give gratitude for what I have.Great idea to think of younger self.Like you my younger yrs was not only greatest. My Dad died when I was 5 like you lost your mom
. I lost my mom at 16.Foster home, they split, then to a orphanage left there. Then went through a bad marriage, However had 3 wonderful children. Now married to a wonderful man and I'm so greatful for him.I call him my Angel on Earth. So showing gratitude for we have and what we went through in our lifes Makes us who we are, and appreciate where we are at. Yes showing someone kindness makes them feel good and we feel good.I like ro say always makes someone's smile cause it's contagious. Sending love Linda and that's what we want is balance in our day.If we want to go to bed at 7 let's do it ! You go girl ! I think first and foremost we need to know what we really are in control of. And what we are not in control of.Many things we have no control and need to accept that and turn it into the best situation that you possibly can.
I work at a state psychiatric hospital. I see the very worst get better. I see circumstances that remind me every day how blessed I really am.
Concentrate on the good things. I am thankful for my health. I can count many many things I do have control over and feel blessed.
I hope I help folks be the best version of themselves they can be.
I know if I had three more children, that I would only have more knowledge to be a better mom. But I respect and adore my children and I know I am loved and they know I did the best I knew how to do.
We need to give ourselves credit for our accomplishments.
I graduated college at 53 years old. I keep thinking of good and do a self reflection often to keep in touch.
My garden and home is my refuge. I love crafting. I surround myself with good people. And my girlfriends and I get together somewhere in the USA, usually at one another home.
I tell my patients to take a walk, volunteer at a place they have a good interest in ( dog help shelter, church, food give away) a bubble bath. Make new memories that a time of year that is very sad.
Bless you for what you have had to deal with, and such a great loss at a young age.
I love your channel. And it is okay to be sad, and down for a short while. Hugs from afar.
Oh my goodness, I love the idea of people being a character your own book. You are charming.🥰
As the southerns northern gardener says " In a word full of hate, be the light".
