The problem with this England golden generation may the opposite of the last one. Earlier they could not handle the stars properly. This time around they choke in the end cause Southgate sometimes plays too shy despite having a squad of ballers. For example, Trent and Rice in a starting pivot instead of Rice and Mainoo to add enough star power that is balanced, but not too much.
To be fair the problem with the England situation nowadays is much more easy to deal with and Southgate has been steadily developing as a manager.
I never really went with the "high expectations" cop out for England failing. When they're on the pitch, are players really thinking "I wonder what the Daily Mail and The Guardian are going to say about me"?

Gareth Southgate faces the biggest problem at the EUROs this summer. For a manager like him to have a lot of talent and options to choose from it’s a good thing, but picking the best starting XI for England it’s going to be a constant headache for him in this tournament every game. The only guaranteed starters on the team are Harry Kane Phil Foden Jude Bellingham Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, in attack and midfield who plays alongside them.
Cole Palmer’s incredible form on a struggling team means that he has to start some games, Kobbie Mainoo at the age of 18 is already good enough to start in England’s midfield and that’s saying something about him, Trent Alexander Arnold despite being a right back is a midfielder in their squad and he could start, out of those players and many more, who would you start. Assuming you go with a front 4 of Kane as a CF, Foden on the left Bellingham as a number 10 and Saka on the right that means that alongside Rice one of Mainoo Trent Wharton or even Gallagher could play alongside him. If they play 4-2-3-1. If they want to have creativity in the midfield it’s Foden as a number 10 and Bellingham next to Rice in a double pivot, we know that on the right Saka will start, who plays on the left Ollie Watkins Anthony Gordon Eze or even Jack Grealish. Where does Palmer fit into all of this because you can’t bench one of the most in form players in the world some believe that he should start over Bukayo Saka on the right and think that Bellingham should play deeper in order for Palmer to be the number 10, due to what he did in Madrid, I think Bellingham will play behind Harry Kane in that position. Who’s going to be their left back if Luke Shaw is nowhere near match fitness Kieran Trippier or Joe Gomez because while their defense is concerning, when everyone is healthy Harry Maguire John Stones and Kyle Walker will all start same with Jordan Pickford in goal. He has finally showed a level of ruthlessness as he knows the importance of winning now which is why the players he has trusted in the squad like Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford have been dropped because with players who are out of form, he’s not relying on what they did in the pay for him. Whoever they play it doesn’t matter because imagine if with all of that talent, England still can’t win the EUROs.
Or they could play a 3-4-3, with a defence consisting of walker, stones and maguire, a box midfield with rice and mainoo/callagher/trent with foden and Bellingham infront of them
Then the front three could be saka on the right, kane as the 9 and gordon/watkins on the left

I wish I shared your optimism. We're only one of the favourites among pundits in Britain, because our media always tries to hype up a tournament. Our defence is nowhere near good enough to win any tournament at the moment. (Btw, 'Palm' as in 'Palmer' is pronounced "PARM'- er, as in 'car' or 'farm'. 😉 )

Bro, Euro 2000. Germany was eliminated by Croatia in the 98 WC, out in the Group Stages in Euro 2000. Final of the WC in 2002 with a weak squad. That German team was one of the weakest. It isnt the curse of high expectations, the squad just werent balamced enough to win.
Regardless of what their starting lineup is and the fitness of the players, England don’t have any excuses if they don’t win the EUROs, as it’s a make or break tournament for Gareth Southgate. Under him they’ve come close yet so far 2018 World Cup semifinals, 2020 EUROs final in 2021, at the last World Cup they would’ve gotten to the final if they didn’t play against France in the quarterfinals. Going into this tournament Harry Kane Jude Bellingham Phil Foden Bukayo Saka Cole Palmer Declan Rice and Kobbie Mainoo are all in top form and even with that plethora of talent there’s only room for one of them in their starting lineup as out of those players some of them will be left out. Remember the last time they had a Golden Generation of talent, I mean they had some of the best players of the premier league era on the same team in their prime, yet they won nothing. The game in general is so unpredictable and with the way international football is formatted having great players doesn’t always make it a great team and that’s what we’ve seen with them. It’s a team with great players, they just need the right manager who can truly utilize them to their strengths.
This England team hopefully doesn’t suffer in the same fate because they have excellent players it’s relatively a young team and not a lot of players have experience at consistently winning trophies (apart from the core of the Manchester City team who are used to winning a trophy every couple of months) even though they’ve been with the national team for a while. You also have arguably the best number 9 in the world on that team who despite his greatness still hasn’t won a major trophy. Depending on the formation they use, they have to choose the right balance in attack and midfield because they have a lot of quality in those positions. To be honest, this might offend a lot of people, but when you actually watch this England team they’re not that good on paper and they don’t really look convincing on the eye and when you look at the names they have, you would think that they’re winning every competition they compete in, when that’s not the case with them. Every major tournament we always say that “It’s Coming Home” for England and you think that they’ll finally win something, but they have a history of crumbling in high profile moments when the game is on the line and people expect them to win. They’re literally like the Tottenham of international football where no matter what happens, you can’t win anything. They always start off well and you think that this is finally their year, only to then get knocked out by a heartbreaking moment. When it comes to winning trophies, you have to have the right mental state and deliver under pressure in big games even if you’re so good and we haven’t see that with England and is it possible that they win the EUROs this summer maybe, or will they suffer another heartbreak in an international tournament.
