I just want to address one point. A few people have indicated that they felt that I was taking undue risks by conducting this flight in this weather. They say this out of respectful concern, and I appreciate that concern. I need to make it clear however that, while I have not posted any videos of flights in this sort of conditions, I have conducted many flights in high pressure environments due to both weather and busy airspace. I was never during this flight in the least uncomfortable with my situation. I was completely in control at all times. I recognized what was going on from previous flights and had plentry of capacity to handle whatever might have come up. I would never conduct a flight where that was not the case. If you don't yourself fly a lot of IFR in IMC, it may seem like I was "on the edge", but that is not the case. I was, however, happy that I didn't have any passengers, because I don't think they would have found it very comfortable. I understand that. But for me, it was well within the envelope my experience enables me to handle. I do not encourage people to get themselves into situations they are not comfortable with, and I don't do that either.
Although you were busy I did not see this as taking undue risk. I would have flown it as well with the hardware you have, the situational awareness is just super. If it was my old Mooney with a strike finder and lagging Nexrad radar on a Garmin 430 I would have cut bait.
Wow, I was pretty stunned watching you and the controllers deal with that huge workload. I love your videos for always being kept simple and not too overloaded with additional information. It just feels like sitting right on board. They really make me think about saving up for an IR. Thank you :)
I really enjoy all of your videos but that one was hard work just watching, let alone experiencing turbulence etc. You did a great job, as did the controllers! Well done.
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I had a special interest in this video which we don't see so often on youtube. Please continue to share. Thank you
Awesome Video!! Beautiful Job! I felt like I was there with You! I’m viewing on my IPAD and Felt Like I left Pucker Prints a couple of Times in my seat!! You are an Outstanding Pilot! Wonderful Job!
Got sweaty palms from watching it. ;) Great job on keeping your cool under these demanding circumstances. Excellent educational video, thanks for posting!
Thanks for this video - I think it is one of your best. It really demonstrates the workload for a single pilot IFR at a busy airport and the need to be on the ball. I'm thinking of doing my IFR training and I see the level of professionalism you need. I was really impressed by the approach controller's ability to adapt on the fly (pun) as well. More snaps than a pond full of crocodiles :-) Cheers and I hope the return trip was less intense.
Thanks for the nice video, jaunty17! I'm an Approach Controller for EDDF myself and just wanted to tell you that when we ask for your present speed, we would like to know your IAS. The GS is shown on our radar. Keep up the good work and when you're in EDDF next time, let me know ;)
Magnus, vielen Dank! Very good to know decisively. Will help me in the future to quickly give a correct response. I'm sure others on the channel will appreciate that as well.
Magnificent piece of airmanship there. Greased the landing considering the adverse conditions. Bloody Germanic efficiency with requesting you to leave the runway effective immediately.
wow.... thats an intense flying experience ... great to see it doesnt scare you too much and you keep your cool... thats the main thing when flying I guess ... keep the thinking process running in all situations since panic clouds the mind and then things start to get ahead of the pilot... great...
It's the sixth time I watch this video since I've discovered it about two years ago. It is still one of my favorite general aviation on RUclips. I hope you're doing well since you didn't upload any video since quite a bit. Greetings from Switzerland.
Really enjoy watching all of your videos. This one is just incredible. One of the most intense flying videos I've seen on youtube. Thank you for sharing.
Well done, and thank you for posting a video like this. As you had "real time RADAR" on board, and de-ice capability, as well as plenty of experience flying in these kinds of conditions, there was no real danger--and you had obvious "outs" if you needed to pull the trigger. Thanks for sharing!
WELL DONE SIR ......THIS IS A CLASSIC IMC SITUATION FOR HELICOPTER AND SMALL PLANES FLIYNG ALMOST IN BAD WHEATER IN WINTER TIME. JUST ANOTHER THING...BRAVO TO THE ATC
jauntry17, absolutely outstanding way of flying you do! I wish I could join you on one of those flights and just observe :) When I was flying GA, the dreams glided to Airlines and now... I am back there. I would love to fly like you do here. Thanks for motivation!
I have heard of "get home-itis" but this trip was "must get there-itis". It is nice to have all the gadgets onboard but they can get you into trouble methinks. If I was flying on that day, it would have been below the bases. Well done.
Wow, thanks for sharing, that was fantastic. I could see the turbulence, and that radar... so much red. I don't think you were taking undue risk, you flew the approach by the book, you had great weather avoidance equipment in the airplane, a good autopilot and were on top of the flight at all times. Just a good plane, a good pilot and understanding controllers. Hat off!
Jaunty thanks for The videos that you have been posting. They are excellent, very professional. I wonder if you are a retired airline captain? The diamond D42 is an excellent machine amazing ! I have seen the Last diamond release the D62. I hope one they Diamond Will be able to create the same models with cabin pressurizing. We wait for more vídeos. All the best
Thanks for that video Capt, very very enjoyable indeed. That was a very challenging approach. Captain, Just a quick one, I could be wrong about what you thought you heard, but on short finals did you think the controller said 'Just keep your eyes on the runway' ? He said, 'Will keep you ADVISED on the runway.' :) Considering the scrolling text you put in, I get a feeling you heard him wrong. Always enjoy your videos. Thanks.
Really busy hands on the multi function displays. Could one get away with less? I couldn't imagine the difficulty of turbulence and hitting the wrong button, or if the autopilot had to be switched off
Real exciting video in the approach to EDDF! Any pilot can see, that you had been in coolness and control of the whole inflight situation. As I watch, I can see the great experience you have on this. It was exciting watching this and it was strong weather but you had a reasonable good plane and the experienced skills to do this. That is my opinion out of the video. Respect doing this but it was no out of control thing. So ignore the typical stupid comments on this I guess out of want to be professionals or semi professionals or some kind of unexpierienced people. Everybody in flight has to make his on decision how far to go and feel comfortable. Thats all to say about! And of course great job.
to "Mr. Ginnation Fun&Lifestyle"....... // I don't know what you are flying Sir....; but not A L L comments from other vid-viewer's are boneheaded.... // suggestion: I F you are trained enought = you watch the same vid several times....and you may find out what I am talking about // greetings
That was fun. I think you did that just fine as a lone pilot. I don't think you pushed too hard and you communicated your intentions with a good ATC. Nice but harrowing.
I would have not been happy listening to that ATIS. I can tell you've I've been there once by accident and once because I had no choice. Flying in that is never fun and this is the greatest difficulty for light GA aircraft in my opinion. You have to be on your game and ready to divert and have a plan, which it seems like you did. That being said, I don't fly into that anymore. I've decided that waiting for diverting for about 30 min is my thing.
Hi Jaunty17 thanks for these nice videos you upload. I have been looking for first hand information on how much owning a DA42 VI would cost in real world without success. I thought you might be able to give some facts and figures since you fly/own one? The operational cost of the plane (maintenance, fuel, hanger, insurrence, etc...) and also when one purchases the plane how much would that cost etc... i am stuck with the idea of starting an airline company with one/more planes like DA42 in Scandinavia. havent looked into details though. Just a dream. Thanks in advance
Good job in the transition and approach pattern. The big boys like to keep the speeds up when penetrating weather to minimize turbulence and airspeed swings. I was wondering if you knew why he shifted you to the South downwind pattern? Was it for traffic spacing, weather, or both? Also, did he ask you for more speed on final due to the following traffic? Thanks.
Yes, the change in arrival was for weather. At least, that's what they said. And yes, he asked for speed on approach due to following traffic. You can see them land (to the right) after I've exited the runway and started back on the taxiway.
Thanks for the reply. I also noticed you kept the oxygen, weather radar and anti-icing on until landing. Was that due to the missed approach procedures or something else?
I thought you were always supposed to report "Indicated" airspeed to controllers ? Weather was fine, reminds me of flying around Texas in the summer. Busy controllers, lots of weaving around and making it work.
suppose you needed to go to EDDF. Just to mention, Frankfurt Egelsbach EDFE is the close by General Aviation airport, which would save you considerable flight time since you`d not need to follow STARS and also no traffic jams. The airport is VFR but if required, ATC lets you down to 2`000ft south of Frankfurt, before canceling IFR.
You really hit some very challenging weather and did very well - congrats. Still EDFE would have been doable. IFR down to 2`000 you`d been VMC. Airport and ATC charges is another reason why I avoid EDDF. Would be nice to meet you some day. I do fly accross Europe frequently with my DA42 too
Good job man for that approach, especially cuz u fly single pilot and it's visible from video, that second pilot would fit in there.. So as a lot of guys here, I'm also curious about costs you'll experience here..
You remarked that you hate to have the TKS running on approach. Is that because it makes a mess? I noticed that you were unhappy to realize it was still on during your taxi. Thanks for sharing the video!
It's messy to have TKS fluid still all over the wings when you land, and it tends to clog up the TKS panels, as well, if the plane sits after that. Normally TKS comes into use in cold weather, so you may not be able to wash the plane on landing (and you may be at a remote AD as well, where you have no possibility).
Amazing video! I was wondering when flying internationally how do you file flight plans? Is it an icao flight plan? And do you have to know the aviation rules of every country you fly into?
The flight plans are filed with Eurocontrol, but I used the RocketRoute service which files them for me. You do need to read the AIPs for the airports you land at, to find out what specific rules they have. Also, ATC in England has some of its own terminology and practices. For the most part, though, flying IFR in Europe is much simpler than VFR.

But for me, it was well within the envelope my experience enables me to handle. I do not encourage people to get themselves into situations they are not comfortable with, and I don't do that either.
It was a good flight, and if the a/c was able to cope with wx ice etc, and you were happy and aware, why not?
I would fly with you any day..... excellent video
I'd agree, this aircraft is even as well fitted for that type of situations like you are ;) -- Greetings :)
Although you were busy I did not see this as taking undue risk. I would have flown it as well with the hardware you have, the situational awareness is just super. If it was my old Mooney with a strike finder and lagging Nexrad radar on a Garmin 430 I would have cut bait.
jaunty17 agreed 100% ! Well handled captain, plus that Da42 is a remarkable piece of aviation engineering. Cheers
Just watching this exceeds my personal limits :) - awesome video
I've watched a lot of aviation videos on youtube, and I have to say this is in the top 10 best of all time. Subbed.
Agreed
Those are some good controllers!!
Agreed!
jaunty17 hi
Major airport, major traffic and major weather! #theperfectstorm Well done sir!!
Wow, I was pretty stunned watching you and the controllers deal with that huge workload. I love your videos for always being kept simple and not too overloaded with additional information. It just feels like sitting right on board. They really make me think about saving up for an IR.
Thank you :)

That was intense and I am glad that you made your way through the storm safely. Thank you for sharing, I love your videos.
A very gripping approach in significant IMC. Could sense the tension under control but ready for anything. You are living my dream.
An amazing video! My level of stress was high the whole way through. Well done Captain, superb controllers and what a capable aircraft!!!
Great video, just shows how much work it was for you and the controllers when the weather gets challenging.
Great job, as always. Nice to watch you handling the workload during the approach in heavy weather and high traffic conditions.
Jaunty17 - a gripping flight! You are incredibly cool throughout. A true airman. Thank you and safe onward journey.
Martin
Got sweaty palms from watching it. ;) Great job on keeping your cool under these demanding circumstances. Excellent educational video, thanks for posting!
Great Job.........you were busy as hell !!!!
Thanks for this video - I think it is one of your best. It really demonstrates the workload for a single pilot IFR at a busy airport and the need to be on the ball. I'm thinking of doing my IFR training and I see the level of professionalism you need.

I really appreciate your video. I just pass my IFR and this video shows the effort we need to do. Thank for sharing and.... good job.
Great video. The situation is very well handled
Thanks for the nice video, jaunty17!
I'm an Approach Controller for EDDF myself and just wanted to tell you that when we ask for your present speed, we would like to know your IAS. The GS is shown on our radar.

Wow, you worked hard there! Really enjoyed the ride, many thanks for uploading. Funny when the controller told you to keep your eyes on the runway!
It's the sixth time I watch this video since I've discovered it about two years ago. It is still one of my favorite general aviation on RUclips. I hope you're doing well since you didn't upload any video since quite a bit. Greetings from Switzerland.
Great video, as always. A beautifully capable aircraft with an equally capable pilot. Thanks for sharing Jaunty!
Whoa, must have been a lot more exciting doing it, than watching it....! And watching was very exciting.
Excellent job! And excellent video! Was on the edge of my seat at 0600 am 👍
Hope you're okay. I'm really looking forward to another video. I always enjoy watching them and therefore miss them quite a lot.
great video! I noticed he never said keep your eyes on the runway, rather "keep you advised on the runway"
Ah, you're right, I feel better now! :-))
Den mest spännande videon hitils! Jag satt som på nålar hela tiden, bra jobbat, och tack för din insatts med att dela med dig av din flygning!
Really enjoy watching all of your videos. This one is just incredible. One of the most intense flying videos I've seen on youtube. Thank you for sharing.

you did great job out there! one of the most excited video that i have seen lately! thanks for sharing it with us!
That was a hell of an approach...Great!!!
That was beyond intense. A great experience I'm sure. I'm actually going to watch the whole video again lol
brilliant video, good work in a busy environment, it just shows GA can mix it with the big boys!
This was an awesome experience to watch!
WELL DONE SIR ......THIS IS A CLASSIC IMC SITUATION FOR HELICOPTER AND SMALL PLANES FLIYNG ALMOST IN BAD WHEATER IN WINTER TIME.
JUST ANOTHER THING...BRAVO TO THE ATC
Very much enjoy ALL your videos!
Scary and gripping, excellent work, Frankfurt is quite an airport to fly into on top of the weather :)
Wow. Rather you than me. That was intense, but you kept your calm. Well done.
jauntry17, absolutely outstanding way of flying you do! I wish I could join you on one of those flights and just observe :) When I was flying GA, the dreams glided to Airlines and now... I am back there. I would love to fly like you do here. Thanks for motivation!
That was a very nice approach! I know FRA very well... Well done... !
This are the best aviation videos on youtube.
Must be somewhat surreal landing a little prop, hopping off the runway as an airliner lands right behind you lol. Great vid.
really enjoy your flights thanks for sharing
amazing, beautiful landing and approach, thx mr.!!
Nice and light on the stick, while in the bumpy soup! Suuuubscribed!👍🇺🇸✈️
A lot of stress, but well done Jaunty! 👍💪🏻
Great video! Btw: the TAM (LATAM now) spooling the reverse at 34:19 is a must hahaha
I have heard of "get home-itis" but this trip was "must get there-itis". It is nice to have all the gadgets onboard but they can get you into trouble methinks. If I was flying on that day, it would have been below the bases. Well done.
nice flying... really enjoyed watching your ILS landing
Great video and stunning arrival !
Amazing video and approach, Respect!
Always happy landings!:-)
Wow great flight. Well done sir. I'm going to Carenado to pickup a DA42 tomorrow. For my flight sim lol.
Såklart man vill utmana sig själv! Kul att få se videon också! Man lär sig något på varje flygning bokstavligt talat!
Wow, thanks for sharing, that was fantastic. I could see the turbulence, and that radar... so much red. awesome great work

Busy - really interesting ! Thank you.
Amazing, thank you.
What an awesome life you have!...the right amount of adrenaline one needs before or after some business meeting
Really busy hands on the multi function displays. Could one get away with less? I couldn't imagine the difficulty of turbulence and hitting the wrong button, or if the autopilot had to be switched off
Awesome video nice flying
chapeau monsieur
Excellent video!
ATC confused with the speed because you're meant to report indicated airspeed, not true or GS.

Intense and excellent video. First class
Amazing video and flying really well done! Impressive.
Now, how would all of this have felt without A/P? ;-)
What an intense video!
Great work! SP IFR at its best
Brilliant!!! Way to do it!!!!
Pretty intense!

Do you prefer DA42 over Beechcraft Baron?
Good pilot job! :)
