One difference between the film and reality is he never killed the guard. The guard was murdered by another inmate who was out on parole that the guard had tortured by beating him and saying that he wasn't a real man and he had sex with his wife. So one day Hamidu the guard stopped by a teahouse on the way to work and the former inmate pulled out a gun and shot Hamidu dead. Hayes said that he would never kill a guard because he knew that once he escaped no one would have any sympathy for a murderer.

In the movie ? Like 10-15% of it. What is true from the movie is that yes a depraved prison guard did exist but no where as near as extreme and cruel like Hamidou in the movie.. in fact that prison guard was murdered by gun point from a former prisoner.. Erik the Swedish guy was true... Rifki was true but in real life he wasn’t batshit crazy... the escape scene was completely different he didn’t simply just walk out. He escaped by a small fishing boat and crossed over to Greece.
Douglas Freeman completely absurd to discredit the Turkish nation is no such prisons in Turkey....film Türkleri kötülemek için yapılmış.Türkiye de böyle hapishaneler yoktur tamamen saçma ..
In the book the Swedish guy Erik did exist and he did go through some experiences with a guy like rifki but not how the movie portrayed him. Depraved/ lack of moral character etc. I didn’t read the book but this is based off what my friend told me who read the book
You have a better chance to get raped in a modern US prison than a Turkish prison back in the 70s back then prisoners had their own wash area with curtains and entrances where you didn’t shower with other man all bundled in one room. That’s how billy described it in the book
I'm 59yrs old i watched the movie and i would never would like to go there. That's unbelievable how billy explains how he escaped from imrilo island and got on the small boat Barry shulman.
Back then the drug war was at its highest my man every country including the US would hand out high prison sentences for anyone trying to smuggled drugs out the country, billy decided to smuggle at the wrong time for being an ignorant college kid not picking up on the News and what was going on with the hijack terrorist situation... plus what the movie doesn’t mention is that billy actually smuggled drugs out of turkey MULTIPLE times before he got caught but his pride and ego got to him.. the Turkish airport was in high alert because of all the terrorist blowing up planes so that’s why he got caught.. previous to all that basically anyone can go inside a plane without really being checked. But speaking by personal experience I highly doubt turkey would give a lifetime sentence now.. they’re more liberal than they were 30 years ago... in China or Vietnam that’s a different story but for many countries you’ll prob get send out to your country and serve the prison term there... plus turkey is a great country with lots of rich history
It was the early 70s.. airport security was basically a walk in, stamp your passport and go wherever you want. He made profit by selling it and had the best hash he could smoke. What He should’ve done is read the newspaper rather than following some random belly dancing chick around and ignoring what was going on with the PLO blowing up planes and such. Would’ve potentially saved him at that time.

Nothing against Turks, but a life sentence for 2 kilos of hashish would allow a little critic ...
It wasn't a life sentence in real.
I will never forgive u! don't forget u make a lot many because of your experience..jest because u laid
Your sentence is incomprehensible.
Speak English you fool.
Don’t smuggle drugs in a foreign country - just bring it to the USA 🇺🇸
How did he return to Turkey for a holiday if he was a prison escapee
No laws against doing drugs in turkey, just don't smuggle
i would like to know if the english guy remained in turkey.such a nice movie and the actor is just brilliant sadly he died by suicide
So Sad !
The actor didn't die by suicide. Do you mean the real prisoner?
these are the armenian theaters..!
Say wuh???I don't think so!!!...
Douglas Freeman
completely absurd to discredit the Turkish nation is no such prisons in Turkey....film Türkleri kötülemek için yapılmış.Türkiye de böyle hapishaneler yoktur tamamen saçma ..
Billy how about Your friends from prison?did they realy existed?
In the book the Swedish guy Erik did exist and he did go through some experiences with a guy like rifki but not how the movie portrayed him. Depraved/ lack of moral character etc. I didn’t read the book but this is based off what my friend told me who read the book
Yet
How many times he drop the soap in prison shower?
You have a better chance to get raped in a modern US prison than a Turkish prison back in the 70s back then prisoners had their own wash area with curtains and entrances where you didn’t shower with other man all bundled in one room. That’s how billy described it in the book
I'm 59yrs old i watched the movie and i would never would like to go there. That's unbelievable how billy explains how he escaped from imrilo island and got on the small boat Barry shulman.
Barry Shulman don't worry turkey we survive even if u don't come! 🖕
0:03 Always a good idea to have Jabba the Hutt's sister for an interview on TV.
She is pregnant, sheesh.
Why would william hayes feel the need to appologise when it was oliver stone that wrote the script?
because he did not speak up
I do not understand why he risked his life like this......
