It's a 5 year old phone. It's a miracle it's even running as fast as it is in the video, especially compared to some android phones from 2017.

In theory it should perform almost the same as it did on iOS 7. I have an old Dell Inspiron 530 desktop tower that performs the same in Windows Vista, 7 and the latest Windows 10. It doesn't bog down, because Windows isn't designed to do that. It runs on multiple computers and doesn't cherry pick, unlike iOS on iDevices. The lacking performance of the iPhone 5S on iOS 11 simply doesn't make sense. I honestly don't understand why people accept that old devices will slow down with time, when they really shouldn't be. iOS isn't that crazy of an OS, it should not hamper performance as badly as it does.

That was my first iPhone back in 2016, though it is a 2013 iPhone. I loved it until it ran out of space, so I updated to the iPhone 7.

You do realize you should’ve updated those apps as they have been better optimized to be stable for battery performance and overall performance of the device. And, you’re comparing the 5S which came out in 2013 to the iPhone SE which is essentially the iPhone 6S which has lots of power that was released in 2016. Not a really fair comparison.
Why can't you factory reset it and try it again, i mean, you had all those apps and games installed of course it'll be slow. Please try that and upload another video testing it reseted!

I just got the 5S as a cheap iPhone starter, and man am I happy with it. It has some lag, but it still runs the latest version of iOS, and I don't mind waiting a second, it's still quite okay, and it seems to be a bit better on 11.4 beta

it’s a 5 year old phone, I think it runs great for its age, and this with the latest software. can you say the same about any android phone? they work great for few months, then get laggy... and get support for max 2 years...

I’ve been using the 5s since early 2015 and I’ve never noticed how slow it really is until I got an iPhone 8 a few weeks ago. As a daily user and if you don’t have any newer phone besides, you might fool yourself that it’s fast, but it’s not anymore. Mine is still usable and it doesn’t lag and opening ios apps is quite fast, but third-party apps take ages to load. I took good care of it anyway so maybe it’s about how you take care of it too. But still slow though. 🤷♀️

My 5s still is good idc if it’s old....I can still download everything I can still call/FaceTime on it....5 yrs old and it still works the 6 is 4 yrs old just because it’s bigger doesn’t mean anything😂My phone is great my phone is awesome and I’m not planning on getting another one soon even if some ppl try to hate on it I wouldn’t care if it was 10 yrs old...A PHONE IS A PHONE‼️🤪🤪

The throttling was for keep the phone on to let you use it because the battery has degraded and it couldn’t handle the power and randomly shut down so Throttling it’s not able for the 5s because the battery can handle the power (because it’s lower than newer devices) of it even if it’s degraded.
This isn’t related to the video but I have an iPhone 6S and an iPhone 6 Plus and I just replaced the battery in my 6 Plus and saw that it’s actually not that slow compared to my 6S, like it’s still very usable and not as slow as some make it out to be. 11.3 really helped it as well. If I used it as my daily driver I would dread the loading times.

Hey nick,I wanted to see if I could get some tips about my iPhone. So I am an iPhone se owner and after the iOS 11.3 update it has been PAINFULLY slow and I wanted to see if there is anything I can do about it. While I am not sure if it is just my phone experiencing this problem,it has been really bad and I just can’t take it anymore. Thank you nick,keep up the good work
I actually use an iPhone 5S just to play Final Fantasy Record Keeper and occasionally use FB, RUclips, OneFootball and IG as a second device just to catch up things when my main phone is out of battery or is charging, and it works good with iOS 11.3... but only have this apps installed and dont use multitask only 1 or 2 apps opened otherwise it gets really slow and everything refresh!
It’s not terrible, I bought a 5s and runs fine for me at least. I have an iPod Touch 6 and I use that for most things, but when I’m in on the go I use my 5s, but for me it runs ok on 11.3.1
Anyone else using a iPhone 5S yet? I'm still using it. Works fine in iOS 11.3. I do have a 6S Plus that I have to get the battery replaced, but in the interim, the 5S keeps up for my uses.

Got an iPhone SE with iOS 11.3 since yesterday to replace my (secondary) iPhone 4 with 6.1.3 (never upgraded).
The faster speed of the SE isn't THAT impressive, compared to my iPhone 4. If it wasn't for the inability to install new apps (and for the lack of space - from 8 GB to 128 is quite nice), the iPhone 4 would still do fine for plain regular use.
From seeing iOS 11.3 on this iPhone 5, I imagine that it would be perfectly possible to develop new iOS versions for older iPhones - but then, Apple wouldn't sell new iPhones... and that's what it's all about.
Well guess i'm staying on 10.2.1. I opened the same apps as you did and mine was way faster. The camera opened up basically instantly.
Apple never did throttled the iPhone 5s but they did with the iPhone 6 6s 7 and SE because theses iPhones use alot more performance and power. and that could have an impact on the battery.)
Great video. Nice throw back. I'll add if anyone is looking for a competitive speed iPhone the 7 and 7plus are very very good options to buy still. I have the 7plus and I use it for shi@$ and giggles and camera for my androids. It's a classic design still running same software only missing really the ios display variation or ambient light. I dont think it's a bad choice for next year or so.

So this is still perfect for me sure it's slow that's what happens when you update it slows down but it seems good for me to watch videos or make calls,browse or play some games. Considering one for my grandma vs her crappy phone which would be a huge improvement.
May you still do occasional videos on the iPhone 5s? Like, iPhone 5s on iOS 12 (since it’s likely 5s will get iOS 12) and another comparison using it. You’ve said before, you will keep doing coverage on a Phone as long as it’s still getting updates. I mean no hate but I’m an iPhone 5s user and I think it still works fairly well. I’m hoping iOS 12 will improve the phone. 💜
Only iphone 6 and above are throttled if below 80% battery capacity, so the iphone 5s even bellow 80% will not be throttled it just that ios 11 runs horribly on it.

I would imagine with fresh battery and fresh software installation that it would work decently well, not having the 3D Touch though kind of a deal breaker, really love using it for quick reply messages and such.
Not gonna ever say it’s a good idea to update the 5s to iOS 11, but if you still have one on like iOS 9 or 10, the 5s is still a good phone in 2018. Now I don’t mess with the 5s anymore, thank god those days are done for me, as I just got the 8 Plus and couldn’t be happier, but the 5s on iOS 10 kicked ass when I got it. Then I regret updating it bc it just got so slow and it got so hot that it was just a pain in the ass to use and I could not WAIT to upgrade.

But I would like to say that 11.3 did make a difference, earlier it used to lag even when opening the control centre. 11.3 did make the lag a lot less

I use an iPhone 5s everyday. Yes it slower than newer phones. This phone is decent, I’m being honest with myself, it’s decent. However I wouldn’t recommend people buy it, though if you do already have it it’s fine and it’ll last another year or so, in my personal opinion

I updated my iphone 5s before see this. In first day battery was drain so fast but in the day after battery was normally drain until today. It slow and crash in some app.

The iPhones with an A9 or newer are much faster for two major reasons:
1- The new NVMe Storage (which is lightning-fast and much faster than eMMC)
2- 2GB Of RAM
Besides that , the A7 is still very capable
In this video after the boot up battery is at 74 and in the end it’s 68 just scrolling though pages makes the battery drain. So Apple is really looking for customer upgrades at least the 5S and 6 users by slowing the devices
When I update my iPhone 5S into iOS 11 it really go slow and the battery life too, Apple should not make updates to old phones so that the old phones shouldn't be so bad and apple should've consider this problem.
I use a 7 but I love the 5S design

I have 6 iPhones 5s in the houses they look like brand new they are in the boxes i don’t want too sell them becauses they are my friends, and i just got yesterday p20 pro changed for s9 samsung, and i’m very happy with P20 pro huawei better camera, hardware, display and etc. Huawei just improved their phones...
It still can be use though instead of iphone 4s that unusable to me. The slow on iPhone not too bad.

I agree. I updated to iOS 11.3.1 noticed battery last longer.
It’s just lack of optimisation.3 rd party developers just use the newer hardware for development.So if they build them for 5S then it should be rock solid even today and Apple will not optimise 6S and below as it has iPhone X,8,8+(current lineup)and 7,7+(last year’s lineup) so it’s just planned obsolescence

Actually, for any 5s user out there it's better in terms of performance than 11.2.2 which i was on before. But the battery life has decreased.

I love(d) my 5s. I stupidly bought it 3 weeks before the 6 came out (before the discount, which I am still kicking myself for). Anyway, last month I finally upgraded to the 8 plus 256 gb and I am still adjusting to the differences - especially the bulk of the 8 plus. I would have kept the 5s except the battery is total crap and I didn't want to put in a new battery at this point.
edit: btw, I am running 10.3.3 - I stopped updating on purpose because I didn't trust them on the older phone.
