- Looking for a simple display manager to use as a login screen? For me, I want a login manager that isn't too complicated but looks and functions a little nicer than just typing startx into your tty. In this video, I'll show you my favorite login manager, ly, and how to install and configure it.

It honestly astonishes me that you aren't one of the big GNU/Linux channels because you pull some quality content so consistently. As an Arch enthusiast (barely a couple of months using it), I can only wish you the best.
LOVE your channel! Very useful stuff, to the point and free of bs. A shame you haven't got more subs!
An advantage of display manager is the typing saving. The last user and desktop environement names are selected for you.
I've been using this for about a year at this point and I absolutely love it
I've been using it a long time ago but I didn't know about the customization. Tysm :)
3:05 you can use the --force option to replace your old login manager with the new one
Good tip, thanks!
Thanks so much, i was having a problem with lightdm, tried to remove it with deactivating and brick startx, installed ly an now have a more minimalist Linux experience
Excellent! It is perfect for those users who have few resources on their PC or Laptop. 👍👌
Great video! How did you add the different window managers / graphical interfaces as options on ly display manager? I currently run i3 with lightdm and would like to make the switch to ly but for some reason my i3 interface does not pop up as an option.
i'm from in VietNam, Thanks you so much for information, god blessed you. i hope you don't give up.
Really good video! Any idea how this can works outside systemd? Compile, tested and everything good.
Just I don't know how to enable the service in runnit.
Great video. One question:
How do I change it's font?
Hola, tengo un problema para poder iniciar sesión sabes el porque? Muy buen video por cierto
What if your using Gentoo with openrc
Do you know how you would launch alacritty and run htop as windowed mode without permanently setting it in the config file?
what terminal font is that? and how do you get grey suggestions in terminal? Cool video!
I think in this video it's JetBrains Mono and the suggestions is the plugin zsh-autosuggestions. More info here: ruclips.net/video/wHnMd8uz6j0/видео.html
Thanks for our video on LY Login manager. Would be even nicer if You would avoid the microphone table resonance sound by hanging or whatever.
Yeah, sorry about that. It should be better in recent videos.
Hey the doom fire effects work for me when typing 'ly' into the terminal and when restarting the systemctl service for ly.
But when I reboot the machine - the doom fire effects don't work. Any idea what's going on?
Hello friend I have a question, when you start the system the ly interface is displayed and it makes a sound and it does it again after you start your session when you are entering your desktop environment. Do you know how to turn off that sound?
Hi installed the new archman with out dm but watching your clip i added this no problem but they have there own repo's so it was not a problem but trying direct from arch was no go anyway tks.
How can I turn off that beep sound on Ly?
Nice video! Could you maybe update your dotfiles, that would be great?
Thanks! I think they're up to date, looking for anything in particular?
What distro and what window manager you use ? Thanks
Arch and bspwm
How can i exit existing session when using ly?
You still use this? This looks like something i would like to use, i wonder if it can cause issues in future though? idk

I guess this very login screen is even called greeter :)
which color scheme for your terminal is this?
how to change default font in archlinux console ?
Thanks for the vid and straight to the point ! I myself use DWM with LukeSmith's LARBS with a few customizations here and there.
Can u make eww widget guide setup?
LightDM is my favourite
LightDM is another good one, I may do a video on it in the future
Not working for my Ubuntu 22.04. Am I missing something after systemctl enable?
You may have to disable your current login manager which by default I think is gdm for Ubuntu. Not sure though, as I've never tried on Ubuntu
@@EricMurphyxyz I just successfully installed ly on Xubuntu 22.04 following the instructions on ly's github page. To get it going I used `sudo systemctl enable ly.service --force`. Here, `--force` ensures that the existing DM is disabled.
after sudo make install. do
sudo rm /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service
then
sudo systemctl enable ly.service
and that's it.
you can algo remove gdm
why not just ditch the display manager and use startx in your shell's profile (if in a tty detected) instead?
I did that before, but this is a little bit nicer of a UI
It's such a shame that ly is buggy when it comes to systemd. Maybe we'll see some improvements on this over time.
work with sway(wayland)?
It should work
@@EricMurphyxyz Thank you very much, I have been trying with greetd and x11 but it only recognizes the session as tty, with sway(wayland) I have no problems but with xfce it only recognizes it as tty
This program is so buggy.. It doesn't return to ly on logout
It works fine for me on bspwm with bspc quit, you might have something configured incorrectly
No need to use a Login manager in the first place. Just log in from the tty.
You can and I did for a while, but ly is a little nicer looking and involves a little less typing
my favorite login manager is
login (the default login manager in GNU\Linux) + xinit\startx
I mean that works too but this has a little more style
