    So happy for you. You trained so hard and have such an amazing attitude to marathon training. You got unlucky with some illness but still found a way to get to the start line fit and ready to take a shot at it. A fantastic execution in the race. You had me nervous on the tracker but that finishing speed was never in doubt right? 😂. Amazing support from Sue throughout the block and the race. You’re a great team. Congratulations again and it was a pleasure being part of the journey.

      Many thanks Matt - been great to do what I was told as it were from both of you although Sue might argue I rarely fully listen to her :) Yeah I imagine my slight fade at the 30K and 35K points must have had the app watchers thinking I was going to just miss it but you telling me to stay positive played on my mind and also I thought I don't really like to run marathons too often (6 in 19 years since my 1st one) so the thought of going through this again soon after for just a few seconds perhaps helped as well. In hindsight there was one long run where you got me to pick the pace up for the last 10K. These things have a reason don't they...

      Matt - You are the key man that made the difference - truly . As Tim has said below he never listens to me ( about anything ! ) but esp about resting when injured and NOT running in the dark ( worthy of note is that he has previously landed himself in ITU and had a near death experience from running in the dark ! ) But he has always listened to you consistently - and indeed it showed . I remain so very very relieved he achieved his target . Thank you again Matt - for everything xxx

      Thanks! Hopefully shows us UK 13 beanpoles can still do it :) I hopefully touched your marathon pace these days at the end so very much looking forward to seeing if you can nail one. You seem to be doing all the right things by working through your previous issues on nutrition. I decided to go for 5 Maurten gels this time. 3 normal, 2 CAF alternating and about every 30-35 mins. I had a fairly normal breakfast about 90 mins before race start with toast, orange juice and coffee and time to lighten the load as it were before setting off to the line which was about 10-15 mins walk/jog away. I took my last gel pretty much at the time I decided to roll the last dice about 5K out.

      Ah ironic we are same age and have same PB although I did mine at 38 as was an 800/1500 runner until just before. Think in a way it helps to know you have been able to run faster but equally sometimes more frustrating that no longer can. I guess though this one still showed that I can still put the work in and do a time that at least I am satisfied with although of course wish could better which is probably why I keep going!

      Yeah I felt that had to basically just get on with this so selected my "favourite" shoes from 2019 and figured any real improvement these days is no longer by "magic" shoes but things like 3 hour runs in the rain when after 5 mins would rather be indoors. Which marathon is next for you?

    Fantastic achievement, but the best thing was you saying that it almost felt like a PB. Renewing the joy of running without defining yourself against what you could do when you were young seems like an important topic for those of us who are getting on in years.

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  Год назад +1

      Yeah it is largely why I have lots of "little challenges" now like the odd Strava CR attempt (if pick an obscure one these days!), running lots of different streets (which isn't performance dependent) and looking at my times by age graded as well as actual. Perhaps I should do a deeper dive into my training for marathons over the years. Got to find some motivation as it were and often these days my goal is to at least avoiding doing a personal worst not a PB. I did achieve that too as my last marathon was 3:09 in London 2021.

      Ah I have got to keep going to keep with you! Sue asked me if I thought I could go sub 3 at 60. At the moment that looks a very tough ask with 4 years to go. You must have a decent chance there. I literally went back 3 mins here from Seville 3 years ago so the trajectory is against me with unless I can effectively "improve". At the moment I kind of felt that was about as well as I could have run all things considered but us runners all cling on to some hope don't we. It wasn't too bad on the weather this year or indeed 2020. It was largely cloudy this time and I think it got to about 18 deg at the end. In a way, I prefer a slightly warmer temperature than back in the UK as on some runs in the training block I just felt a little cold and although have taken to wearing arm warmers back home, I still like to wear half tights. • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  Год назад +1

      Maybe I wasn't trying hard enough earlier :) although TBH I felt I was going as fast as I dared and I had really wanted to do 1:29 something at the HM (although 1:30:00 was close!) so if anything I was struggling a bit even back then. I do find the marathon a big mental game as well. The pace is such that it "sort of" feels comfortable but usually the legs just go. I found that in 2021 when I had not prepared properly - aerobically wasn't too bad but the legs were not used to running that long which is at least something addressed this time with at least 3 runs at 3 hours and few others not much less and also some 15+ mile MP sessions which are long runs in themselves but do not really feel that way. I think perhaps there is an element that my now MP isn't that "fast" and I am plenty capable of physically running a lot faster but in recent years I found pushing to the max a lot "harder" than maybe in my younger track days when every race was basically pretty much all out and indeed needing big finishes. So yeah I think my take here is the long time on feet runs prepare you to try and make the distance as it were and if I go past LT in sight of the finish well far better than after a few miles at the start of the race when certainly you have nowhere to go.

Makes me wonder if this 67 y/o could do a sub 4:00 (but I think I need to PB in the Half Marathon first and it’s doubtful, since the PB was a decade ago)🙋🏻‍♀️. @TimGrose  Год назад +1

      @@laurainthehaute918 Sub 4 would be quite something - only 6 UK W65s did it last year and only one was 67 or older. What do you think you can do for a HM at the moment? As it turned my 88 a month ago clearly wasn't the end of the story even if it felt a bit like it. Not quite sure what next. Going to rest until the weekend. Probably 5K as then can also do some track and 10Ks over the summer. That said I always felt I was still better at shorter distances but the training and the marathon itself this time suggests not always the case. Definitely my best race in some time.

    • @laurainthehaute918

      Tim, I like what you say about the 88 not being “end of story”. I like to think my rough 2022 is giving me an extra year of running well. I do think I’m past a sub four goal at this point (those UK women are remarkable). Would be thrilled to run another marathon again and get a BQ. But right now I’m rehabbing and building heading into a June half (Grandma’s). No idea where my speed will be. I’m going to start some track workouts in a few weeks (my coach is keeping me patient) and race a 5k mid April. Max so far is 7 miles and hope to do the 68 furlongs (8.5) Friday. Thx for the encouragement. I’m hopeful that the “distance” I’m doing will keep feeling good. 😂 Your performance still inspires. Amazing work!

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose  Год назад

      @@laurainthehaute918 Sounds like making good progress. I think I found this time that the marathon is less about “speed” per se but fatigue resistance. Might do a video on it but things like the 3 hour run I did in the pouring rain throughout were probably worth as much than some of the shorter sessions which don’t really prepare you for the last few miles when legs almost gone. How far off sub 4 were you last time? I might argue I regained 10 mins over my last marathon by actually training for one.

      I met Sue on a plane back from there - Sydney in fact! She lived there for a few years but I was just visiting. Which part are you from?

    Inspiring stuff. Congrats Tim and thanks for the videos along the way, easily my favourite running channel on RUclips in what is a densely packed field.

      Thanks much appreciated. Hope I try and show a slightly different perspective to others being an aging but long term committed runner who now can't shoot for PBs but does it for the love of it and hopefully still tries to do as best as I can.

      Thanks. Just remembered it is now 40 years since I started training "seriously" and joined a running club - what is now Ealing, Southall & Middx AC.

    Brilliant run and report…that is one phenomenally strong finish to the race. Looks like the coaching really had you in a good place physically even though mentally you were worried about your readiness. Well done on the sub 3, a brilliant achievement.

      Yeah both Matt & Sue were particularly helpful on the mental side right at the end as I did not feel A1 and wondered if setting off at sub 3 pace was just too ambitious. Somehow I found something at the end.

      Thanks! I saw you and Phil York doing "laps" the other day. I ought to at least get round a few in the summer hadn't I. I can at least claim an 800 M55 PB if I do one as not done one yet as an M55. Yes Matt doesn't make a big thing of his coaching in his own videos but it made a massive difference to me this time. I also wanted to make sure the arrangement came over as real and not sure temporary for show as it were.

      @@TimGrose My 800 was dire, but with a little help from Phil the 1500 was more satisfying.
      Looking at your race vlogs Matt's progressive last few miles of the long runs paid massive dividends when you kicked up to 10/5k pace to grab your sub 3 !
