Takes me back to tuning a neighbour's twin SU carbs on a straight six with an airflow meter....the owner was amazed that - once tuned correctly - the car was economical and reliable.
Finally, an unpretentious and educational RUclips channel dedicated to classic cars. I've found my new favourite channel on RUclips! The scenery in this video is just fantastic. Makes me wish I was back in the old country with a 1969 Alfa Romeo Spider
A House Of Cars he just adjusted the carburetors but with very very experienced hands ! He reminds me of consultant and resident students, both can do same job but the fine touch or small advice from consultant can make a huge difference
When Iain was speaking, the *_curator_*_ of the Franschhoek Motor Museum_ was listening to him with rapt attention, and said genuinely "bit of education today, fantastic!" Yeah, Iain is the exemplar of a Master.
My Mothers Brother was a Mechanic of the Old School and he could tune a car by Ear like this and when he was done you could put a full glass of water on the top of the engine and not spill a drop !....I loved having him in the car when I drove him a few times because he could hear every little noise and he would say to me You need to replace the top rubber bushing on your left rear shock absorber or your front right wheel bearing is on it's way out so fix it soon before it becomes a problem ! He raced motor bikes at the speedway when he was young and I remember him driving my Father and me on dirt roads at 80 MPH steering with one hand and rolling a Ciggarett with the other going around corners sideways without slowing down ! he was the car wisperer to me , He was my Hero !
I had a chance to see this very car at Franschhoek Motor Museum last summer on my honeymoon. Absolutely stunning. My favorite car of the whole museum. Seeing this video pop up in my feed was instant clickbait.
You remind me of my father Iain. I remember buying an MG Midget, my first car at 19 years old. I couldn't get it to run properly. It drank petrol like a fish drinks water and at £1.02 a gallon I was always broke. My father tuned the twin SU's exactly the same way and it ran beautifully from then on. I remember looking at him like he was a genius. Good times, thanks for the memories Iain.
I don't think I've ever clicked on a video so quickly before. It's a channel that never fails to deliver something interesting and worthwhile. Thanks, mate. :-)
I’m a huge fan of the American V8 burble but it stirs the soul to hear a big British straight 6 on full song, easily as musical as Andrea Bocelli. Thank you.
@@nick2128 in my experience, today's auto mechanics are simply taught how to diagnose a problem and then told which parts to remove, and replace with new. Almost no effort is made to fix a problem. Modern auto mechanic teaching would not work for mending a 1950s carburettorred motorcar.

That brings back memories of using a simple length of hosepipe to set up a costly car, The sound in the ears is so sensitive that it is amazing. thanks for a trip down memory lane and a good skill using a hose pipe
I’ve been to that museum. The estate actually has a race track built on the property! Don’t know why they didn’t take it there and give it a run instead of only driving it on the access roads. Especially since they complained the cars don’t get much of a work out. It is a great place to visit though and is located in a very picturesque part of South Africa.

One of the truly best sounding engines, wonderful noise, Tadek Marek proved it was no fluke when he struck gold again with the later V8, another wonderful sounding engine, watch Iains latest video of the DBS V8 for that
Beautiful car and what a beautiful place the guys at! That collection of cars looks incredible, hopefully it stays safe in these times as South Africa isn't what it was 20 or so years ago, especially for the farmers out there.
How long before it’s broken into and vandalized. Crime and corruption are rampant in South Africa. They are so incompetent they can’t even keep the lights on
I am from Cape Town and have been fortunate to visit the Franschhoek Motor Museum. Awesome experience as is watching this channel. Thank you for showing the rest of the motoring a little piece of beautiful South Africa and some excellent motor cars too!!!

Very therapeutic watching someone who actually knows what they're doing, & talking about, with such a stunning machine. The on-boards (the Aston, and the V12 Ferraris in previous vids) are particularly welcomed :)

That is real mastery appreciated by the knowledgebles. I love it. There is a thoroughly enjoyable video where Tyrrell tunes an old authentic Riva launch on the Como Lake in Italy. Go and see that one, too.
I turned the subtitles on for this, and I like the way that when the engine was roaring , it just said 'music'. The sound of this engine is indeed music to mine ears.
Iain, you are more, much more, fortunate than I. I have lived 47 of my 61 years just 50km from that museum, and have, to my shame, never visited it! And you get to go there twice within the span of less than two years...
As a South African, this post has elevated you sky high.....thank you.... South Africa is a beautiful country with beautiful people......Im a white guy with a Zulu wife.......Gavin Austen and Sibongile Austen.....the world
What stunning countryside. I had no idea South Africa was as green as that beautiful Aston Martin. It’s a pleasure to watch you,a master at the black art of setting up multiple Webber’s by ear.
Fransch Hoek = Dutch for French Corner. Settled by Protestant French Huguenot refugees after King Louis XIV cancelled the Edict of Nantes in 1685, which had awarded limited tolerance to Protestants and who resumed Protestant persecution by confiscation of their wine estates. They fled to the Dutch refreshment settlement at the Cape of Good Hope, which has a Mediterranean climate and terroir much like the south of France, and established the wine industry of South Africa there back in the 1690s.
Henrik Forsberg .....you wrote exactly what I was thinking. Leaving a car unused does not change the fact that it was not properly tuned in the first place
I love the way the curator really looks out for, holding the screw driver each time. But also that the owner, known to be extreme protective of his cars. Calls Mr Tyrrell in as the only one allowed to work on his cars. What a respect we see!
People always comment on how well my vehicles run. I've always tuned my vehicles by ear. What folk don't realise is everything else needs to be perfect before you can tune a car correctly. If your engine is tired or has issues you'll never get it running silky smooth. Always a pleasure watching you setup these old webbers. At the moment my car is fitted with SU's. I doubt there are a handful of V8 Rovers in the country actually setup correctly.
With the knowledge and experience that Iain has, I really hope that he is training his technicians back at his own workshop. Saying that, he's probably forgotten more than any trainee/apprentice will ever learn! A joy to watch and listen to a Master motor engineer. Keep up your good work sir.

Lovely video Iain and your silence when the South African dude said that the car had 'run perfectly on a Top Gear shoot,' was priceless. You and Harry should do a road trip together.
Hello Ian, That was a wonderful video. The last time I heard anyone who tuned by ear was a man called Dennis Ball who was my fathers chief engineer at a company called Western Machinery which was based in Ivybridge in the West Country where he built tested and maintained new machines which had been imported from Scandinavia in the late fifties early sixties. He used one of his workshops to rebuild a written off Porsche 356B. His son took the car out for its inaugural run - he wrote it off! I’ve have never seen such a disappointed father. Dennis served his apprenticeship at Rolls-Royce so there were a number of similarities between the two of you! He often used to say when he was helping me prepare my cars for local rallies to listen as a lot can be learnt from the noise an engine makes together with its drive train etc I of course was too young to learn but indeed they were wise words and now I hear you and look back it brings back some happy memories. Thanks for that and of course the video of a fabulous car with a truly wonderful engineer. Chris Flemington
Real mechanics know how to work on a car with basic kit. I once knew a guy who could use a screwdriver and by putting it on an engine could tell you exactly what was going on inside. However when you can do it on the DB4 t up you know you are looking at a man with serious knowldge and capability,. Terrific video Iain, and as to the sound of the DB4 tuned...Pure music. Cheers, Bob
These videos are sublime Mr Tyrrell, like watching the worlds finest Michelin chef cook a soufflé your expertise and passion for classic vehicles are a must watch for any petrol head
If you have a hard to reach screw that may be dropped, try tying a lanyard to it, either strong cotton or fine fishing line with a slip knot, then when you are sure it has started, remove the lanyard. Wonderfully enjoyable video Iain, I live in Western Australia now but I am originally from Cheshire and remember hearing good things about you back in the 1980’s.
For goodness sake, this man needs to be accompanied by 3 apprentices at all times. The knowledge needs to be passed on. It’s pure gold.

He often used to say when he was helping me prepare my cars for local rallies to listen as a lot can be learnt from the noise an engine makes together with its drive train etc I of course was too
young to learn but indeed they were wise words and now I hear you and look back it brings back some happy memories. Thanks for that and of course the video of a fabulous car with a truly wonderful engineer.

Cheers, Bob
"last time I was here they asked me to tune".... NICE, and very much thank you for sharing this with us.
I can't get enough of these videos. So exciting, informative, historic. The only sense that is unfulfilled is smell 😊
These videos are sublime Mr Tyrrell, like watching the worlds finest Michelin chef cook a soufflé your expertise and passion for classic vehicles are a must watch for any petrol head
You are a very skilled mechanic. Well done. Cheers Phil.
