5e is probably the most reconizable ttrpg people play. All the lore, characters, worldbuilding, writing, ect. can be plopped into any setting or system. And it's not that hard to homebrew/convert mechanics

As for the homebrew 🤢🤮 why bend, twist and break the rules of the system to match your vision when you can choose an existing system that matches your vision out of the box?
