- Episode 36 - Calimshan
South of Amn and Tethyr, Calimshan ruled most of the region in the past. Controlled by powerful genies, cities were built and cities fell by their hands.

It seems like every wasteland in Faerun's history starts with "And then X banded together to cast a powerful spell..."
And when this wasteland is a desert you can be sure that genies were involved
Excellent.
I JUST made a character from Calimshan. This is awesome.
DUDE. THIS IS SO FREAKING COOL. Thank you for making this, I get overwhelmed reading all of the lore and you make it so digestible and clear. Thank yoooou keep it up!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Aww you remembered! Thanks Jorphdan this helps out my campaign a lot
Thanks a lot for all the effort you put in your videos, it helps all of us new DMs catch up with all the Forgotten Realms Lore
You're welcome! It's fun! I'm glad you're enjoying them =)
Great video, thank you.
Awesome work. Can't wait for the next one !
i know im late on the punch here. but your lore videos are beyond amazing! Im so glad i found them. and super thankful you've taken the time and effort to research and put together such informative and entertaining videos.
Thanks so much!
I'd love too hear more about Post-Spellplague Calimshan. I mean Calim got loose but vanished, the Genasi took over and enslaved most of the humans, and then the son of the Genasi Pasha lord dude killed him with a falling earth moat, and from what I can tell things have eased up a bit, but its certainly a great time to run some adventures there
Of the 3 main dnd channels I know of this one I prefer the absolute most!
That moment when we have a 6 minute video that give more lore than the 5e books do.
heavy Ottoman Empire influence
Another great video. If there's anything I'd change, it's the length of the videos - my personal preference is in the 10-20 minute range. I might be in the minority there, though.
That's good info to know! I've tried to keep them down to 6-8 minutes so they are easily digestible bits of lore. Perhaps I'll tackle some larger topics and make some longer video. Thanks for watching :D
Wywernywin I agree with this! I love this lore
Jorphdan I definitely like your long, in-depth videos!
Yeah i would love longer videos, to devour this wonderfull lore of dungeons and dragons XD
I concur, I love the DnD lore, and while small snippets are fantastic, I need more. But as always great vids and content mate 🤘🏻
Looking forward to the Dalelands.
Awesome video! I want to try to start a campaign in Calimshan, specifically Calimport. The premise would be a return/resurgence of The Night Parade.
One of my favorite characters that I ever made was a sorcerer from Calimshan with the Bloodline of Fire feat who specialized in pyromancy. I've recently remade the character and have him as a permanent NPC is most campaigns that I set in Forgotten Realms and he stands as easily one of the most interesting characters that I've ever played: A sorcerer from a land where casual magic rules and fire sorcery marks one as potentially noble blood who grew up on the streets, stealing and conning his way to a decent life before he awoke to his spellcasting ability. He awoke in a violent way, torching half a city block after being caught and nearly dragged off to be a sacrifice to an evil god then fled to become an adventurer.
In Pathfinder using the Spheres of Power system, he is considered a dual blooded sorcerer, wielding the phoenix and fire elemental bloodlines, representing a character that sees fire not only as a tool, but the very thing that keeps people alive in their time of need should it be properly respected.
As an outsider to D&D (never hung my hat on the game), it amazes me there's a land based on Arabian Nights and the folktales therein like Scheherazade's One Thousand And One Tales.
This setting sounds really cool because of the diversity of beings and creeds. One is bound to find any flavor of adventure they like here.
You know, it always bothered me that in D&D it's "Djinni" (singular) and "Djinnies" (plural) instead of "Djinn" (singular) and "Djinni" (plural) as it should.
I always thought Genies, but you're right. So there you go, I learned something today :)
Actually Djinn is both the equivalent of humankind in Arabic or can also refer to one djinn
creating a half-orc monk/cleric that might end up being from Calimshan, so this helps a lot, thanks!
Sounds like Calimshan is Zakhara for when TSR/Wizards forgot where Zakhara was.
I just found these videos and I really love them, although I must admit a bit of disapointment with this one. Not because of the content, which was fantastic, but because you totally missed the opportunity to use "jinnerals" instead of "genie-generals."
Ha
Thank you Jorphdan!
Nice, I am just now rolling up a Calimshite paladin, who has decided to travel north to Waterdeep to spend away his wealth on one last hurrah before taking a vow of modesty and dedicating his life to fighting for justice.
Thanks for great content
Hi Jorphdan, im a big fan of your videos! Im starting a new campaing and wanted to learn about the 5e version of the swordcoast and the north. Could you make that video next? Thanks!
Hi Welcome! I'm slowly making my way up the sword coast. Hopefully I'll address your topic soon!
Could you do a video on Volo? seeing the name is so massively on the monster manual? Or is there just not enough information given about Volo?
+TheUnborne probably could. I'll check into it. I think WoTC uses him more to tell stories rather than give him a history. But we won't know till we start digging. 😀
How about that review of Calimshan’s Adventurer’s Guide?
It's on my list! Just.. so much to do, so little time...
Try the Swordflight series. Arguably the best module available for Neverwinter Nights. It's set in Calimport and its surrounding areas.
I'm playing Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition right now, I'll have to give it a shot thanks!
Absolutely awesome! !!
"Hello; my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
4:43 what is that a picture of? what book etc etc etc. look very cool. Just wanting to know what it is and where to find it.
I believe he's from pathfinder adventure path: wrath of the righteous. You can see the artist here:

Jorphdan oh cool, thanks I saw that artwork and it gave a Deadpool feel. may be the red and black outfit. lol
So is Calimshan considered "High-Magic" since magic of all forms is accepted and it's so common place?
Makes me think that a human of Netherese descent who admires there heritage would like the land of Calimshan alot since its a location very similar in views, abeit still needing a way to go in order to equal such an empire.
Where did you find that map with the red political boundary lines?
Not sure what book it's from. It's a 2nd edition map. I googled Political Map of Faerun
remind me not to mess with elves, holy shit.....
ngl I heard "people worship angry, vegetable gods" and was confused for a moment
Am I the only one who thinks that Calim would be voiced by Jafar or possibly Memnon anyone?
Zakhara & Al-Qadim next?..
I'm starting a Al-Qadim style game soon, so look for those campaign Diaries. I'll probably make a Zakhara video in the future. Thanks for the idea :D
Ws that a shrine to Mordenkainen?
Anyone watch the anime magi, love their take on the genies
Ah yes, where Artemis Entreri comes from.
I believe the PH to be one syllable of your True Name.
But u didn't say a word about Calimshan after Second Sundering. The crystal with Calim and Memnon was destroyed, many genasi who covered themselves by magic started a wars etc. Population of Calimport reduced and in 1479 its only a lower than 100k. This region is fucked up now
Great vid but you left out the best part of the area.... The Genasi. Also that cities have more than one Pasha...
+Sam Levine good to know :) thanks for the comment and yes genasi!
comment tribute
4:30 #calimshanisamerica
Sounds like Rome
I love your videos BUT ! nobody cares about the "ph". please stop mentioning it. If only for me :)
Sorry it's on almost every video. I don't have the time to go back and edit them all. I probably will in the future when I deem it necessary to rebrand myself. Some day! Not today 😀
