    lyrics
Leave the sleep and let the springtime talk
In tongues from the time before man
Listen to a daffodil tell her tale
Let the guest in, walk out, be the first to greet the morn
The meadows of heaven await harvest
The cliffs unjumped, cold waters untouched
    The elsewhere creatures yet unseen
Finally your number came up, free fall awaits the brave
    Come
    Taste the wine
    Race the blind
They will guide you from the light
Writing noughts till the end of time
    Come
    Surf the clouds
    Race the dark
It feeds from the runs undone
Meet me where the cliff greets the sea
The answer to the riddle before your eyes
Is in dead leaves and fleeting skies
    Returning swans and sedulous mice
Writings on the gardens book, in the minute of a lover's look
Building a sandcastle close to the shore
A house of cards from a worn out deck
A home from the fellowship, poise and calm
Write a lyric for the song only you can understand
    Come
    Taste the wine
    Race the blind
They will guide you from the light
Writing noughts till the end of time
    Come
    Surf the clouds
    Race the dark
It feeds from the runs undone
Meet me where the cliff greets the sea
    Riding hard every shooting star
Come to life, open mind, have a laugh at the orthodox
Come, drink deep let the dam of mind seep
Travel with great élan, dance a jig at the funeral
    Come
    Taste the wine
    Race the blind
They will guide you from the light
Writing noughts till the end of time
    Come
    Surf the clouds
    Race the dark
It feeds from the runs undone
Meet me where the cliff greets the sea
    Come!

This song is always so much fun at their live shows. Everybody sings along and dances/jumps. Even during Floor's soloshow in 2021, in between two corona waves when everyone had to stay seated, we just couldn't help but jump out of our seats when she did Élan. You just can't sit still.

    Hi Eric
    Another brilliant reaction. Thank you
I like to add 2 things.
The Goddess mentioned in an interview that this is a favorite of Princess Freya.
She calls it "Fireman"-song. Even Floor doesn`t know why....
My explanation: in the (very very good ) video there is a scene with a man shuffeling coal into a big fire-boiler.....
The other: this song was on her setlist during the first concerts of the solo-tour in the netherlands last autum.
As the pandemic wasn`t really gone, the audience was "forced" to stay seated througout the concert.
As this song began all the Dutchies gave a sh*t on that rule and made a big jumping and clapping party out of it.
BTW : after the last friday I unterstand why you are able to explain songs so brilliant to non-musicians as I am !!!!!!!
Thank you very much for that.

God, when Marko switches to a higher note after "we will guide you from the light" brought me to tears. I've heard this song plenty of times before (long time nightwish fan) but Marko's voice coming in like that, specifically during this live performance really hit me hard. Damn I love both his and Floor's voices...

That was from 2018, the Decades tour. They were touring in support of the Decades compilation album, which Thomas characterizes as "essential" Nightwish, not necessarily "best of", or greatest hits.
Side note, this song is an example of one of the reasons I love them so much. It (as so many other songs do) says this life is great, GO OUT AND LIVE IT. Oh, and that is listen to a "daffodil" tell her tale.
    Great job anyway.

    • @bwaychick20
      @bwaychick20 2 года назад +2

Yup. “Listen to a daffodil tell her tale” is the written lyric.
However, welcome to Nightwish, where the band rarely if ever gives you “the meaning” of the song. Come to your own conclusion, and live your life.

It lead to mental illness and alcoholism and I lost my dear man, our relationship and our love didn`t win the darkness... Then I found Nightwish... They broke my soul with their beauty but they also brought my soul back together. They are so beautiful and magical, they can heal the most broken soul. I am a living proof of that. I think the video underlines Erics intepretation of message of the song. Altough I am not a native english speaker so the might be some details which I cannot pick.
In general nightwish is better in live performances, but in this case the song should not be separated from the video.
The people on the video are famous finnish actors. Famous in Finland I mean of course.

You are right indeed, but may I add this tangential observation; I think we know Tuomas is exceedingly well read and acutely keen on nature, perhaps a nod and development from a famous poem by William Wordsworth:
"I wandered lonely as a cloud", it's worth a read in this specific context and the themes of this poem are nature, humanity, memory and imagination. Things that would strongly resonate with Tuomas I believe.

    • @MickRiley
      @MickRiley 2 года назад +1

@@572Btriode I agree about Thoumas being well read and yes it could well be devoloped from that poem even to the lines "Ten thousand saw I at a glance",
"Tossing their heads in sprightly dance" seem appropriate as if pointing to the audience in my opinion.

Hello Eric, great reaction and analysis again. The "different maid" is a daffodil, as already mentioned. But you absolutely nailed the subtext of the song with this nonetheless.
Élan is enthusiasm, joyfulness, eagerness for something new, fresh and uplifting. Travel with great élan, discover the world, find something new, change your old ways. You absolutely got this right.
This is one of my favourite songs, even though its rather pop than metal. But who cares with a song, a message like this?

  • @Plastikdoom
    @Plastikdoom 2 года назад

Oh, that turning yourself over to whatever type of ‘performance’ you’re doing, whether singing, playing instruments, or working on/fixing things, os very real and that’s what the best among us do. In whatever field or fields you’re in. My field of being really good has shifted somewhat, from musical, to physical things, trouble shooting mechanical/electrical, electronics, and finding/fixing the problems. Partly because of interest, also because of what I did for a living, wanted to do, and hearing loss, just before and especially during being a US Marine, no I’m not crying, that’s a reality of what I did and loved. Just how it goes, I actually never learned to read sheet music correctly, but was first chair in regular band. In symphony and marching band for wood winds. I was as good. With practice as brass. I could sing pretty well for most of my early life, emphasizing on could, then I got more and more deaf as a result of other things, like needing to work for a living. As a kid, and general practices then. I don’t fully regret any of that, but a word of caution to younger kids, protect your hearing, os very important, I’m tone deaf in pretty much the whole mid range now, and some of the highs of low range, to lows of the high range. I cannot understand what the vast majority of women say on the phone, or in person, of I can’t see their lips move, or guys, with a higher voice…or if there is a fair amount of background noise, and they aren’t being loud. As it just turns into noise I can’t understand. But giving yourself to a performance, I did that physically in football, I always did my best then, and got some really crazy shit done that way, was my best ever, same in the USMC, with 3 deployments, 2 to Iraq, one to Afghanistan, camp leatherneck, on camp bastion, the Brit base in Helmand province on 08, was a not nice area to say the least. And giving my self over to what I knew, and could do, always gave the best results. Letting my knowledge and training take over, and guide my thinking side of me, always gave the best results. I could and would find the problems. And fox them, faster and better, by not overthinking. Letting what I learned and knew, experience all that form the response to what was going on. And no I’m not some crazy newer age person or belief system, that’s just how we work, the old thing about multiple choice tests, is mostly correct , that you’re first selection is usually right. That’s how we work, based off of knowledge and experience and seeing bob from your village doe from eating weird shit. Like 9,000 yrs ago. We inherently know what should and shouldn’t be, whatever the field, at least for major things, and the more refined things he criteria gets, the more refined our experience and training eventually catches up to. People talk about AI and machines/computers replacing us…nah. They can’t make snap judgments in milliseconds, that are wholly encompassing based in experience, knowledge and training, like we can. We can and do see entire outcomes, based on all that, in thousandths of seconds, when it matters, no AI can crunch all those numbers and variations in that tiny amount of time it takes us, to barely perceive what is happening , start to realize it’s familiar, then jump to we’ve seen in, we know th result, we know many other results, and this is the action we must take, and be right, in 3 thousandths of a second, then we start to physically act at least in another .15 seconds after that.

You always read so much into these songs and you're very gifted at interpretation. I'm afraid you misheard the lyric though. It's "Listen to a daffodil tell her tale, let the guest in, walk out, be the first to greet the morn." Even though you got the lyric wrong, I think you're not very far off in your interpretation. You're talking about a different maid, in other words, let the new person sing before you decide the band now sucks. Well, he talks about letting the guest in and continuing to enjoy the day. So I think you were pretty close. Tuomas is such a gifted writer, arranger, lyricist, composer, in so many ways! Whatever he's trying to say, I think it's worth listening to. Thank you for another great video, and for continuing to feature Nightwish even though you've now gone through most of their biggest songs. This is a band that deserves to be explored thoroughly, beyond the depth of the hits and most famous songs. You're one of my favorite reactors because of your ability to put into words almost exactly what I'm thinking. You've brought up things in songs that I was too dense to notice, and I'm grateful for that. Keep up the great work, and thank you again!

Tuomas' facility with language always astonishes me.
I don't have to look things up as a rule (also British grammar school) but I regularly watch reactions from native American or English speakers who don't understand words he uses. And the amount of metaphor he can express in English is incredible.

I have found reactors that concentrate on the music and ignore the lyrics, that's fine it's their channel to do as they please, however, for me, the decoding and digging into Tuomas' metaphorical and allegorical lyrics is the second bite of the cherry. It is intentionally enigmatic though as we all sometimes see it differently, just as he intended !

Leave the sleep and let the springtime talk
In tongues from the time before man
Listen to a daffodil tell her tale
Let the guest in, walk out, be the first to greet the morn
The meadows of heaven await harvest
The cliffs unjumped, cold waters untouched
    The elsewhere creatures yet unseen
Finally your number came up, freefall awaits the brave
    Come, taste the wine
    Raise the blind
They will guide you from the light
Writing noughts till the end of time
    Come, surf the clouds
    Race the dark
It feeds from the runs undone
Meet me where the cliff greets the sea
The answer to the riddle before your eyes
Is in dead leaves and fleeting skies
    Returning swans and sedulous mice
Writing's on the gardens book, in the minute of a lover's look
Building a sandcastle close to the shore
A house of cards from a worn-out deck
A home from the fellowship, poise and calm
Write a lyric for the song only you can understand
    Come, taste the wine
    Raise the blind
They will guide you from the light
Writing noughts till the end of time
    Come, surf the clouds
    Race the dark
It feeds from the runs undone
Meet me where the cliff greets the sea
    Riding hard every shooting star
Come to life, open mind, have a laugh at the orthodox
Come, drink deep let the dam of mind seep
Travel with great élan, dance a jig at the funeral, come!
    Taste the wine
    Raise the blind
They will guide you from the light
Writing noughts till the end of time
    Ooh, come, surf the clouds
    Race the dark
It feeds from the runs undone
Meet me where the cliff greets the sea, come!
I don't know which line in the song you were thinking about, but even though I have listened to this song countless times, I get the lyrics wrong from time to time.
BTW....this is without a doubt my favorite Nightwish song! I can only say it just makes me happy! I have a severely injured lower back and cannot walk more than 1 or 2 steps without collapsing on the floor. My neurologist has told me that because of my rare genetic blood disorder, I would only have a 5% chance of surviving an operation to fix my back! So...keep a good outlook on live is imperative.
On good days, I try to sit at my easel and paint...I have sketched out about half of a surrealistic painting to Elan. I have also started a sketch from a line in the song, "Storytime." It will be an abstract.
Thank you for all the effort you put into these video reactions! They are fantastic!!! I try to watch ever reaction you put here on YT! Besides your knowledge, you're extremely knowledgeable and you make me laugh at time!

Great reaction once again; One theory about this song is that it refers to the French word élan, meaning vitality. doing something with elan is doing it lively, forcefully with an undertone of happyness. The music video plays to thai idea, showing a lot of people stuck in the drudgery of work, of life yet still remembering to "travel with great élan" at the end. To remember to wonder at the miracles of life, not losing that childlike vital force of life. just my view on it. no matter the age of your body, let the dam of mind seep, have a laugh at the orthodox. Living with élan makes life so much more wonderfull. Losing your élan makes life very bleak. listen to a daffodil tell her tale is the line :-), but your interpretation is still valid, i belief. thanks again and see you next time!
