Without a doubt my fellow countryman Van Basten in 1988. What made it even greater was because it was in the final, not only making The Netherlands champions of Europe for the 1st time ever, but also clinching their 1st (and so far only 😞) ever trophy of a major championship in football.

Well I wouldn't exactly agree with you guys there. Prior to '76, @ euro '60 they finished 3rd & @ world '34 & '62 they were runners up. a team with such record behind them they are not a team to take for granted.
But I would instead place Denmark on 1st place based on the fact that they didn't even qualify to show they were not worthy of playing there. They hardly prepared for the tournament but won it!

@@nyikomhlongo8248 well,of course you are right about them being strong but W.Germany was the current world and european champion.

I had called my Portuguese friend the day 2004 Euro kicked off by apologizing. He goes for what? I said for the hearts Greece are going to break. We had a chuckle... and then Greece beat them twice! No one believed they would win. Getting frowned at for their defensive style of play... like they had any other option. It was an absolutely insane month of football for us Greeks. Beating Portugal in the opener. Stunning Spain with a draw in the second game. They lost to Russia, but a late goal helped them advance past Spain. They beat defending Euro champs France, stunned the Czechs and made Ronaldo cry in the final. In no game were they expected to win. In the elimination rounds, they didn't concede a goal.

I think Croatian players prayed every day to meet Germany on that World Cup and this was part of their motivation. Also, during match, Croatian coach even carried a police hat, allegedly of French policeman who died in a fight with German hooligans. He used all his madness to "galvanize" players. Also Croatian goalkeeper had by far the best game of his career then. And left foot expert Šuker even scored with right foot then. XD

They had failed to qualify in 2012, they had finished second in their group losing to Italy in 2016. You should add context to all games. You only added to some of them - which is very important.
Some were due to luck, some due to the superior team already qualified.
Also there are a few important wording mistakes: a penalty taker does not miss if the shot is on target. That's a GK save.
But it's a good list overall. Looking forward to a top 20 after this year. Might be an edition full of surprises.

As somebody from the netherlands honestly 2020 (2021 technically but you get my point) lose to czechia was more stunning. We dominated both the qualifications as the group including beating germany in the qualification. To then lose to czechia in the first knock out phase.

@@ezraezra2928Your so wrong. How can losing the first game in the groupstage be an upset and a knock-out not. Portugal was already qualifide for the knock-out. Please watch the game in 2000 before you judge or change the name of this video
