Fenugreek Benefits : What Is Fenugreek ?

  • Fenugreek has had a lot of claims made about it from Testosterone boosts in men to increasing milk production in woman, and even fighting hair loss. What does the research say? What are the benefits to eating fenugreek herbs and seeds? In this video highlight some interesting studies which have been conducted on Fenugreek.
This is not medical advice, always consult a physician before taking any new herb or supplement
Fenugreek is a herb that appearance wise, is similar to clover and native to the Mediterranean region, southern Europe, and western Asia. The herb is used as a spice in various traditional foods, and also in traditional medicine. Many choose to make their own teas from the seeds, while some companies sell the herb in pill form as a dietary supplement.
When people talk about the plant its important to note that there are different parts of the plant which are studied.
There are many different chemical compounds in both the fenugreek herb, the fenugreek seed and also there are different extracts, some that contain the seed husk and others that take the husk out before extraction
Tea made from the seeds of the herb has consistently proven to increase milk volume in breast-feeding women.
A study published in the JOURNAL OF ALTERNATIVE AND COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE had one group of new mothers ingesting tea brewed with fenugreek seeds at three cups per day, on the third day they measured mean breast milk volume, the women drinking the tea produced a mean 73ml vs the control group which produced just 31 ml, they also found the babies of the fenugreek tea mothers got back up to their birth weight faster, for the guys watching this, apparently after babies are born they actually lose weight before they gain it, don’t worry I didn’t know that either.
Here’s where things get confusing though, in recent years manufacturers have been selling Fenugreek as a testosterone booster…
Now I’m going to get this out of the way, based on the evidence it doesn’t look like pure unaltered fenugreek alone, in any way increases muscle and strength, studies have however shown increases in Libedo in men but testing for a rise in testosterone has been unreliable.
When talking about Testosterone it’s also important to mention another even more potent hormone, Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT.
This hormone is similar to testosterone but is far more potent in activating androgen receptors (the receptors that cause men to display manly features)
In our body circulating testosterone is acted on by an enzyme which turns it into this DHT. DHT is also one of the active hormones responsible for male and female pattern hair loss.
DHT is anywhere between 2.5 to 10 times more potent than testosterone at activating androgen receptors in your body.
And while studies on fenugreek have occasionally shown a mild increase in testosterone, these usually go hand in hand with a mild decrease in DHT.
In one study DHT levels in men dropped by 9%.
It is thought that this occurs because something in Fenugreek is inhibiting the alpha reductase enzyme, leading to a backlog of testosterone which isn’t converted to DHT.
Which in theory could mean a slight benefit if you are suffering from male or female pattern hair loss, but this is also the only thing fenugreek does which can be clearly explained by measurable hormone changes.
Just using a tiny testosterone increase doesn’t explain why people report for their libedo increasing.
First of all, the testosterone changes which have been detected are only minor, and secondly, the brain’s androgen receptors primarily only respond to DHT and not testosterone, so if fenugreek means less DHT, if anything shouldn’t libedo drop.
Well it turns out as I said things are just more complex
It has been found that ingesting between 2-5 grams of fenugreek seeds can help lower blood glucose levels, and improve glucose tolerance, something helpful for diabetics and pre diabetics. This could be in part due to the soluble fibre in the seeds slowing down digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, that’s the explanation given by www.diabeties.co.uk

I barely know any Indian who doesn't like this with some Dal (cow pea lentil soup) and rice !
I wonder whatever our ancestors consumed was so healthy until we adopted the Western diet (Pasta, Pizza, etc).

This is kind of cool. Being from India, we have fenugreek in loads of stuff, and more than half of the commercial supply is grown in India, with roughly 3/4 of that grown specifically in Rajasthan. There are volumes of "home remedy" type beliefs about it. The thing is that India's traditional form of medicine "Ayurveda" is entirely built on this sort of collection and cataloging of home remedies and spurious beliefs and just inventing nebulous supernatural causal forces for it. It's nice to see that there are people who study this more formally and try to determine real causation.
The seeds are one of the key aromatics in sambar, in loads of pickles, and it is presumed to aid fermentation of urad dal-based batters. It's also one of the spices typically used in curing Turkish Pastirma (the main aromatic component -- sotolone -- is also heavily present in maple syrup and to a lesser degree in molasses, so that's probably why American Pastrami veered towards adding brown sugar or maple in their rubs). In the northern parts of India, the leaves are used more heavily than in the south, and it's just eaten like a leafy green veg, or worked into flatbread doughs and what not... also, the dried leaves are an absolutely essential herb for butter chicken/paneer.

    • @parasharkchari

@@lumprisca4526 You absolutely can -- my in-laws do add the dry leaves (typically sold as "Kasuri Methi") to their tea pretty much every morning. That said, they only add a relatively small amount in concert with several other things as a large amount of fenugreek on its own, steeped like a tea would be quite bitter and can even induce vomiting simply because it is so bitter.
It is principally a savory herb, and is typically only used in savory dishes, and so it might be difficult to make a decently palatable tea solely out of it. One thing we have learned in Indian cuisine is that no flavor in the known universe pairs better with fenugreek leaves than does garlic.

Someone bought Nugenix Total-T (a popular testosterone booster) for me as a gift. I thought it would be a scam, but the stuff works! Unfortunately at $70 a month, I can't afford it right at the moment, but I got a free sample for an additional 15 days. I am thinking it's the Fenugreek in Nugenix that has the largest effect. I'm going to test the theory and see. I will update in a few months. But one month in on the Nugenix and I feel soooo much better!! 37 years old and I suffer from low-t, confirmed by blood test. Let me know if any of y'all have had good luck raising testosterone with Fenugreek, please! :)

Still felt like crap most of the time, so IDK how, but the Nugenix stuff really made me feel much much better! I feel like it's the fenugreek, the more I learn about it. Nugenix has 600mg of Testofen in it, which is a brand name for a proprietary Fenugreek Seed Extract. I'm hoping I can get this for cheaper than the nugenix. We shall see! :)

Jesus is God -Hello this Melba. Good to hear from you. Just to let you know, those exercises have helped me. It took almost a week before I noticed myself feeling a little bit taller.
For the record, I am 66 years of age. And a couple of years ago, my voice started to change. Out of my mouth, I started sounding like an old woman. So to my surprise, I started massaging my feet, at least 15 minutes on both feet. Bending back toes, putting pressure between my toes, going back and forth at least 20 times.
As the months went by, my voice became stronger and stronger. I know longer hear my voice sounding like an old woman.
Your feet affects the the whole body. A couple of years ago, I was diagnosed with Unspecified form of Dementia. Once I started to get little better, I went online and to what I had to do to get pass all this.
So once I started taking herbs such as Lion's Mane Mushroom and Shankpushi Powder plus Supplements, I am back to doing the things I used to do.
For months, my daughter had a difficult time trying me to do something. She was at her wits end. Now she can't keep up with me.
I told my Primary Care Doctor, "As long as I have breath in my body, I will never take anymore medications". Yes, I had to read, especially the Bible, exercise and lift 5lb weights.
Well, I am going to close now. Take care now.

    • @melbabennett3576
      @melbabennett3576 4 года назад +7

Last, but not least, before any of us knew why I was having problems with my memory. I had to pray and ask God to help me get back to the way I used to be.
He heard my prayer, but it took time. I also had to eat right. So my dear, whatever you do in life, never lose faith in God. There are days, I would almost break down crying because God came through for me.
The Lord told me, "It's either the meds or Supplements". I chose the supplements. And to this day I still take Supplements, especially the ones for the brain. Well, I hope you have a great Christmas and New year.
