i have a very similar setup for travel. i have a Raspberry Pi 4 in a small enclosure with two 1TB spinning disk HDD's (cannot seem to get SSD's to work correctly with the Pi) with OMV 6 for storage. i have the GL.iNet Beryl travel router, cant say enough good things about it. had it for about 2 years now and its been rock solid. i VPN back to my house with it whenever i connect to Air BNB, hotel wireless etc. i also create a picture share folder on one of the drives so that everyone can upload the vacation pics everyone has taken. which is super convenient. it can be a hassle to get everyone to post them on social media or have them send the pics directly to you. found that chasing everyone down after we get home can be a hassle! lol

I also have a similar little bag with a Pi4 running OMV in an older Geekworm Case, 1tb SSD and a GLINET Slate AX. more than enough to run plex on, should we be somewhere there's no internet and if there is internet, there's a shared folder through tailscale, home to the unraid box, to sync/offload anything important each night.
The worst thing about having such a cool travel setup is ... now we have to travel more to get to use it!

hi Jeff (thank you for all!). good idea a mini PC with openwrt router; with OMV we can have also a media server (I have Jellyfin and Substreamer installed with OMV and Yacht)

that router supports openVPN and wireguard. If that is the case then that is a very good router for that price and well worth it.

Buy a single small multiport USB power brick along with cables that are USB to whatever the computer and router need. That should all fit in your case.

Frustrating that the mini router doesn't come with a case, but for the price its hard to complain.

Great job, but why would you need a travel server when modern devices have so much storage. surely you would store what you need localy while traveling ? also you should be able to access your home server remotely ? if you travel here in UK or Europe you are unlikely to get an ethernet connection, most Hotels or resorts have WIFI only. Having travelled all over the world my advice is to keep things simple you dont want to be sat in your room playing with a server.

Depending on his job he can enable it as a repeater if oversea and enable wireguard or openvpn to connect back to home I have the Beryl AX version it's extremely convenient.

Sounds like a Faff to me. Especially if he is travelling with his family as he says. I bet they get hacked off........@@jcbennett1984

Mike you use English in an unusual way. What are you British? I don't know what you mean by hacked off? A router is a great thing to bring when traveling, especially if you have a family. I just plug it in and all my family devices connect, because everything is already set up. This is great for spouse and child approval factor. We are more secure because we have everything going through our VPN automatically. So it may seem Faff but its actually Beaver away!
