Amritsar is home to the Golden Temple or Harmandir Sahib. Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the Fifth Sikh Guru, conceived the idea of creating a central place of worship for the Sikhs and he himself designed the architecture of Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar. Earlier the planning to excavate the holy tank (Amritsar or Amrit Sarovar) was chalked out by Guru Amar Das Ji, the Third Nanak, but it was executed by Guru Ram Das Ji under the supervision of Baba Budha ji.
Every day, lakhs of devotees, irrespective of their age, caste, creed, or gender, visit the Gurudwara to pray for their and their loved ones’ health, and wealth. After matha tekna, they have langar at the langar hall, which feeds over 1,00,000 people every day. With delicious kheer, dal, parshade, chawal, sabzi, and more, people fill their stomachs and leave the place with a heart full of peace and gratitude.
Langar Hall at the Golden Temple is the largest free kitchen in the world. Open 24 hours, year-round, this food hall feeds over 100,000 people for free every day. This number can double on religious holidays. Just one of the huge bowls in the kitchen is enough to feed around 10,000 people.
