    I've always clipped my pets nails myself, with my new texel guinea pig rescue girls I find the easiest and most stress free way is to wrap them up in a pillow case and pop the foot out that I need, clip clip clip and then switch it for the next paw. They don't wriggle or anything and they look super cute in the process 😁

    I love watching Saskia’s nail clipping videos. it’s like watching the perfect Guinea pig nail clipping video - like the ballet of nail clipping for guinea pigs. Probably never achievable for us mortals, but that’s why watching Scotty’s nail clipping video as a companion is so awesome. His video is Guinea pig nail cutting for us mortals. He is a little bit better than I am, but I feel there is hope for my technique and everyone is going to make it out with all their toenails intact this nail cutting session.
    I am teasing everyone here - if you cut your pigs nails with almost no clips , you are hero to me. Honestly nail cutting in my house is traumatic for everyone. They don’t like to get clipped and I feel horrible when I clip someone. I clip really sloooooowly to make sure I don’t clip them. This make my pigs and kids bonkers. I paid the vet one time to cut my pigs nails. The vet did it exactly the same way that I do it, so there was no reason to pay someone else to do it.

    Aww, such a cute little piggie model for us. I can't get over how well you handle those curvy nails! It takes me like 2 minutes just to cut one curvy nail lol. I find that piggies seem to dislike the noise of the clippers more than the actual clipping, they only seem to pull away after that clip sound is made.
    It's been about 10 weeks since I cut my piggies nails because I've been really sick for the past 2 weeks. Every time I cough the pigs run away so I didn't want to be coughing while clipping nails. This video comes just as my cough has finally settled down!!

      @@amandah2866 Bless them, they hold grudges easily and forgive easily. Hehe, it is great to hear that nails are clipped. You did it! I am still learning with my bunny. She panics, then i do.

    • @amandah2866
      @amandah2866 5 лет назад

      @@erkheth So true. We often say that guinea pigs would make terrible politicians, they'd be too easily brought off with grass/veggies lol.
      Practice will help you stop panicking when your bunny does. The more you do it the more comfortable you get, even when they panic. I find it the same with treating hay poke, at first I went to the vet every time but after a couple of injuries in the middle of the night I had to treat I got more comfortable doing it. I've not had to take a pig to the vet for hay poke in quite some time.

    You look extra glamorous today giving piggy manicures, Saskia!! Have you ever had a piggy chew on their own nails? One of mine likes to do that and I really wish he wouldn't. I worry he will bite off too much or crack the nail leaving a sharp edge. I keep a close eye on his nails, but so far he only chews off a little bit at a time and it hasn't been a problem. I also like to soak their feet a little before clipping and use a file to lightly go over them when I'm done so there are no sharp edges. But I suppose that takes a lot of time and might not be all that necessary. I just like to pamper my piggies a little extra I guess. Haha I have been practicing your technique at home. So far so good!

    • @LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue

      Inspect the foot carefully, he may have a bit of ringworm between the toes because that is the only times I have seen a guinea pig chew their feet. Get some people athlete's foot cream and apply it 2 daily for 10 days or so, making sure it goes all over and in between the toes.

    It is true, with practice you can get the hang...im still training myself to clip my rabbit's nails. It's all about her relaxing, feeling as though she is being groomed, and not specific attention to her nails. Obviously different method cos she's a bun, but practice and confidence is important. You are both teaching me to be self assured with my pet, it's making a difference and i thankyou both deeply.

    Saskia, you need to watch my quick video of my Aby. giving me sass in the middle of a nail trim, it's pretty funny/cute. She's good for nail trims but usually by the time I get to paw #4 she's had enough and in true Aby. form she lets me know she's done, so give her a minute and then finish up. Nail trims are not hard to do but they sure do act like you're murdering them. Just be gentle yet firm, take your time, try to get it over with quickly but don't rush and give them a treat when it's over. Glad to have you back

We need a video to refer people to, to show what guinea pig parts look like when there is nothing wrong - like “this is what healthy feet look like,” etc. I know that stuff is sprinkled throughout your instructional. Ideas, but usually you’re addressing an example of a problem. Thank you! Keep up the good work! 😊

    What works for us is to have one of my children support the pigs so their legs sort of stick out. We do it two different ways, one for the front and one for the rear. And also they sit in a revolving chair, so I can rotate the helper and pig a bit. Helps to get them lined up correctly... I use my right hand. We keep corn starch for errors but they rarely happen. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got about clipping was from a commentor on an LAGRP video who advised to shine a bright flashlight through the nails to see exactly where the quick ends. Wont work if your pig has all black nails... You dont have to do this every time; its just to help you calibrate to each individual pig. Also have a very sharp set of clippers... dull ones squeeze the nail before cutting and the dont like it. Using thr flashlight you can literally see the blood in the quick being squeezed back into their toe. So get a good quality sharp set of toenail or large fingernail clippers like Green Bell or Seki.

    I was given an older guinea pig when I was about ten. That was many years ago, but I'm almost certain I never cut his nails or cleaned his private area. I would have remembered that smell if I had. I fed him whatever. He was in a tiny cage. All I remember doing was bathing him, cleaning his cage and loving on him nonstop. I don't remember him having any issues, but he must have because of my ignorance. There was no Google or RUclips then. I don't even remember my mother helping me or instructing me. That poor little guy. I feel guilty every time I think about it. My daughter's two piggies are super high maintenance and have required multiple trips to the vet. Surly my childhood piggy had all the same needs. Obviously my ignorance and lack of adult guidance caused that poor little guy to be neglected and suffer. I always wonder if anyone else feels that way about piggies they had as children.

So cutting nails is very hard for me. I get the back ones done but the front is sooo hard. I about took her toe once cause her feet are so small. I am gonna try again now after watching your video. I hope I can get them cut.

    "if you surrender an animal you are a terrible person!!" No being a terrible person would be to not surrender it to someone who can look after it, and to instead abuse it until it dies or set it free into the street. thank you for recognizing that people who surrender animals are terrible people. I personally haven't and have never had to, but I hate when people jump to them being terrible people.

    I am almost ashamed to tell you that I have been afraid to clip my own guinea pig's nails since I was a child. I did cause a bleed (small one just like you discussed but it traumatized me!). I have owned many, many furry potatoes over the years and have subjected them to an unsettling trip to the vet, every three months. I have handed over so much money just for nail clippings. This video has inspired me to just overcome the foolishness of my my own fear and do this myself!!! Thank-you.

    Your instructional videos are always so helpful especially nail clipping. My piggies go nuts, but veggie bribery always helps. Just a side note..anyone who scolds a piggy shouldn't have one. They will only get frightened ans thats not good

    I am so glad that I'm not the only one that struggles with clipping their piggie's nails! We have a male named Snickers and you'd think I was torturing him when I attempt to clip his nails! 😫 But I gotta suck it up, or rather HE needs to suck it up, because I can't afford to have our vet do it for $45 every couple months!

    My piggies see the clippers and they weak before I touch them. 4 out of 7 of my pigs are bad getting nails done the are ok. My 7 week old piggies nails are so tiny hard to get plus she is hiper. It got done barely. And yes corn starch and regular flour is good if you get a bleeder while cutting nails used them both.

      Aww, it must be heart wrenching before you clip. But it sounds like you are getting on with the task with bravado. I hope it becomes easier with practice. And time. And patience...you are not alone

    Hi I have a question- I recently got this boy who is about 6 weeks old. I've had him for more than a week now. He isn't eating much. The only time he will eat is when I am sleeping at night. I've got told he still doesn't eat when I am not present in the room. I was just wondering if you could give me any tips and what your thoughts on this little boy

      Youngsters can have URI especially if the husbandry has not been the best from birth.
      Best to see a vet and perhaps see if he needs antibiotics. A guinea pig that is not eating right is a sick guinea pig unfortunately

    What pellets do you feed your piggies?

    • @erkheth
      @erkheth 5 лет назад +2

      Sherwood pellets is often suggested and healthy. But I'm no Saskia or Scotty....

    • @LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue
      @LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue  5 лет назад +2

      Most pellets have filler like soy, corn and wheat. None of those are good for pigs.
      Sherwood is the only one so far that we can recommend. We use our own Piggies Choice pellets 100% organic and no fillers but don't sell those yet.

      @erkheth 5 лет назад

      @@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue It will be a wonderful thing when can sell your pellets. But it is true of fillers, for guineapigs and so many other pet foods. It took some time for me to realise and educate myself, but im getting there. And thanks to your channel, and others', we can all learn better and faster

      Saskia from Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue
      What’s wrong with Oxbow pellets?

  • @woahhkatie
    @woahhkatie 4 года назад

    Hi Saskia! My sisters had a guinea pig for around 3 years now and she’s never trimmed his nails. I decided I’m gonna have to be the one to have to do it, because my mom refuses to and my sister pretty much neglects him so I have to care for him and I don’t want it to affect how much he can walk and stuff. He has curled nails thatre pretty long, do I do the same method as in the video? I’m scared I’ll hurt him or cut too short.
