First mistake was to set up shop in CA.
California is the birth-center of American car-culture. Furthermore, name another State that manufacturers have badged their special edition vehicles after. Even Enzo Ferrari knew California was the center of American car culture. It is common knowledge that if manufacturers cannot make their vehicles viable for the California market then it doesn't go into production, this includes meeting all CARB emission standards.

It was so painful watching this episode. Watching you put some of the more difficult bits to remove BACK onto the car (you can pass smog sans PRECAT and EGR valve, btw) - brought a tear to my eye...and not the good kind. Regardless, it’s always awesome to see the Z32 get some press.
Ikr but it was all to "add value to sale price".
Someone who will own this 300ZX later on in the car's life is going to remove all of these things they added. 😆

California has a BS visual inspection it might have been caught in that.
Removing those great looking dump pipes to fit factory crap back on it, thereby choking the turbos. Best bang for buck mod I ever did was get a dump pipe with de-cat replacing the stock dump and cat converter on my 1JZ-vvti. The turbo spool up was SO much quicker.
This was painful to watch.
I love the attention to detail you do that goes unnoticed. Like the painting the valve covers.

i respect you for going all the way! but you didnt have to do that.. it will fit with motor in car. step1, disconnect exhaust, step 2 disconnect shifter linkage and transmount. step 3 remove upper plenum, step 4 jack up transmission high as possible. this will increase gap between firewall and motor. step4. install or uninstall EGR Valve. yes PITA, but car is well worth it!
Sir I hope this will get o you. You are, for me, the greatest genius ever work on cars, I am mechanical inclined but never had the opportunity to study for it(money issues) but if I had an economic finance stability

In Japan, This awesome sports car are also called Nissan Fairlady Z in Japan.
My Z32 is a bad machine. I’ve had it 20 years and I still get shaky with adrenaline when I get into it. Modified just right. O yea, I live in Texas and can’t wait when the weather cools.
I hate it with the little snippets of the whole show. Wish they would air the complete episode. With all that work, I wonder if it would be simplier to get a legal engine from a junkyard.
I expect cats for 300zx are extremely rare since there a typical tuner car. This is wheeler dealers after all so engines cost quite a lot of money
That was why Edd China left. They got rid off the work part because of cost of filming. He felt that that work was what made the show and he was right.
Had a 300ZX Twin Turbo years ago. JWT chip. Sport 500 turbos. Poly bushed. OZ Split rims. 450 BHP and could have gone so much higher. Was a great car. Just sad to see this one put back to normal spec. Those Nismo wheels should have stayed on as much as the decats. Oh well. Great to see it though.
Anything needing fixing on this car is always a nightmare.
The VG series engines were a pain for repairs. 300ZX known for this so don’t think it’ll be cheaper bexause it’s Japanese. Expensive car to have, different proposition to the Skyline
Engine and gearbox out and you didn't check and/or replace the clutch?
Like not putting a water pump in when doing the timing belt

I have always loved!! Watching wheeler dealers but why do they have such a hate on anything modified, at the beginning he said he liked the aftermarket wheels, then at the end he called them stupid, plus who the #$$@ detunes an engine, California was not!! A good place to set up shop,

What's weird to me is that WD originally when they were in the UK actually did modify cars to quite an extent.
Just look at the old episodes where they did these:
●Turning a 944 Turbo into a track-day car
●Setup an R33 Skyline GT-S to be a drift machine
●customized with snake skin livery and added 50 hp to an FD RX-7 (it had ~250 hp before they tuned it)
●Turned a heavily beat up Cadillac Coupe De Ville into a superb show car
They never disliked modifying cars and mostly did very nice mods. But now here we are trying to make a near 30 year old car emissions friendly. 😆

It's a big thing at the moment in the uk of people stealing catalytic converters.
"at the moment" what? its always been an issue... it became an issue when the first Prius came out and even then they were getting stolen years before

They are doing this shit in some cities in TX, LA, and others, not to mention NY State wide.
Which is really the problem with these later 300ZX : you can barely fit your hands in there to do anything. Everything becomes a huge project. Even the later model Z31 was hard to get into. Too much engine and stuff into a small place.
All design is a compromise.
Small price to pay. Honestly, the griping about it is overblown.
all doable without pulling the engine but most mechanics tend to work this way as they don't know how slow and painful it might be otherwise.
You can actually only need 2 cats and not the ones at the turbo down pipe

I don’t understand why they got rid of the Nismo rims. Those are more desirable than the standard rims. They even said they got $2000 for them. And they forgot to put the Nissan badge on the front.
1990 didn't have a nissan badge on the front, it only had Nissan spelled out on the front bumper.
Are OEM Nissan catalytic converters really that cheap? Something like $430 all-in IIRC.
Is this an American program or a British one ??
you better be replacing your VTC solenoids while youre in there.. @02:35 you can see at this shot that the tar is fully melted out from backside of vtc solenoid. its on its way out. needs to A: be resealed or prefferably B: replaced with new.. NOT CHEAP!

In the old days of carburettors, every car I had suffered from pinking. Tried everything to eradicate it. Only thing that worked was to retard the timing further than that specified.
I wanna know how to get that 3rd brake like on that spoiler

The VG30 has a dual PCV system. One for under boost, one for vacuum. The one when boosting is always pulling a vacuum on the case, regardless (plumbed to turbo inlet). The one he’s replacing is arguably worthless.
and whilst you had it out you should of swapped the turbos
All the bits that have to come off for engine work is the reason I never bought one.

You can't sell a car any were without a cat. If not on there the seller has to allow the cost to put cats back on.
I drove my 300zed to the zed zed top concert were I saw a zedebra who escaped from the zedoo, after that, I went home to catch some zed's.

It's understandable why they added the emissions equipment, but California is sometimes annoying when it comes to their emissions BS. That's basically how the MGB died in 1980, all thanks to the stupid emissions laws and other things that were introduced in the 1970s. The only thing that really would be needed would be the PCVs to reduce crankcase pressure, and that's basically it.
Is Ant Jason Statham's brother, and why aren't they making action movies together, would be my question.
you have practically ruined the zx. free exhaust, egr injectors, ecu, you made a mess. Now that gorgeous 300zx will have a measly 280 horsepower

Agree. Fault diagnosis has "gone out the window", instead; AA knows instantly what part is at fault and gets right on with replacing it.
@Kurt Koleszar If Ed China was there he would say let's keep those nice NISMO wheels because this episode it's painful to watch they removed all mods that improves the VG30 reliability and they removed the NISMO rims for the heavy ass ones from factory Brewer watched to many F&F movies by that he thinks anything that has aftermarket parts it's rice or has no soul what an ignorant because NISMO it's from Nissan so If he removes those wheels he is insulting Nissan's aftermarket parts division name

I know it seems nuts for people that actually know about the wheels and the car. I doubt Mike knew about it or he just wants to play it safe, and restore the car to original condition so there won't be any issues with selling it.
@@aaryeshg.6526 Actually those OE rims add more value than the OEM ones because those rims are from NISMO which it's the performance division of Nissan Mike doesn't have argument in that part a Nissan 300ZX Z32 or an Sileighty or S13 S14 with a pair of Nismo LMGT2 can duplicate the resale price a pair of Nismo wheels like the LMGT2's alone worth 3000 dlls and those are made in Japan about Mike what you would expect he is from Europe were there is a lot of hard-collectors I'm not against them but if they are going to relationate all tuning and aftermarket and street racing with F&F which it's the worst example of tuning like Mike does I can't take him serious .

Honestly, he couldn't just have bought a stock car and saved "Ant" all of this work. If the car was sold outside of California it has to meet federal emissions standards for 1991. It should be mentioned that doing all these modifications is only possible in states that dont have emission inspections.
It is nothing compared to the standards that UK drivers have to meet with a MOT or drivers in Germany and the EU in general.They check not only emissions standards, they check the road worthiness off the car. Why anyone would remove a cat is beyond me (unless its plugged) I hate getting stuck behind a old car and having to smell the gases.
If you can even find a completely stock Z32TT, you’re going to pay about $20k, give or take. Most cars this age are exempt from emissions testing in most US states.
