My Grand Daughter is African-American and half Western European but we are Americans. I adore this song Lift Every Voice . I’ve been teaching her this song. I think it’s very important to learn this song side-by-side with the national anthem… she can come to her own conclusion . That’s what America should be all about
A constant anthem, with a resounding theme. Let those who are endeared to the culture and history of a people who have given more than necessary, and taken less than requested, keep a solemn promise to each other, that freedom IS FOR EVERYONE!!! God Bless you ALL.
Wintley Phipps is African Trinidadian, born in the twin island Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago. He grew up in Canada after his family immigrated to Montreal, Quebec when he was a small child.
Mr. Phipp's voice is just beautiful and the lyrics to this just makes me feel full with self love and pride in my race for all the good that we have done and we will do in the future :0)
When I just sang the full song it was so sorrow. But the way he say it it skip the part of the the chastening rod and all the sad stuff. That is why this version makes me happy. God bless.☺️
What a great song regardless of your background. First time I heard it was at a Lutheran Synod convention in a great Detroit church with a huge pipe organ and nearly a thousand mostly men singing to the top of their lungs. What an experience.
Lift every voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand. True to our God, True to our native land.
Hello fieryrabbit87, a few of us are singing this song at my school next week, but not in this arrangement. I would LOVE to have these images playing in the background but without the song and without the lyrics on screen because the timing is different. Would you mind emailing this to me that I may show it?
A song for freedom. Freedom from injustice and all the sin man commits against man. But this is not just about social injustice. I know many consider it a song for the civil rights era, which still continues. But ultimately a song about our victory over sin through Jesus. It points to that great victory celebration when we will see Jesus.
I love this song. I remember it from my youth. But isn't it a patriotic song? An American song? The NAACP had the Johnson brothers write it for Lincoln's birthday for 1900. It's a wonderful song.

Lift every voice and sing

Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us,
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,

Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
