This Beautiful Wood Was Riddled With Ants | Woodturning

  • It seems like most of the wood I am turning on RUclips right now is driveway & yard wood; wood that has been sitting around for who knows how long. Well today I keep that streak alive with this beautiful piece of persimmon that has laid underneath some maple & hickory for far too long. Because of how long it has sit around, ants & other worms decided to make it their home which created some gnarly grain colors & bug voids. I will say the ant bites I received while turning this piece were worth it in the end. For the wood turners, if you ever get the chance to turn persimmon, I highly recommend it. Its a great wood to turn but be cautious with the drying; its a doozy.

I love the fact that you didn't fill those bug holes. It gives the pieces so much character. Very nice piece!

That was my thinking! With how many holes there are, I thought epoxy/filler wouldve taken away from the piece instead of add to it!

That is a nice looking bowl. Like the “worm trails” in it, gives it more personality.

When I first came to the states in SC, we had persimmon off cuts delivered for firewood. I was super hard. Now 40 years later I wish we could get our hands on more to turn, not burn, since it is unheard of here in Montana . That's a beautiful piece thanks for sharing .... Montana Wood Art Bozeman MT.

Those ants were like Led Zeppelin, they were dazed and confused with all that spinning wood they were riding.

More than likely they were carpenter ants or termites (ants with wings).
