I had issues with those top red buttons too and I have a few of those remote controls. One of the vcr buttons actually changes it to the tv ! In actually wanted the tv power button to turn my tv on & off but from what ur read on the manual is it says it only operates technics/Panasonic equipment and TVs. Which I guess makes sense. I switch it to tv to use the digital optical sound from tv to receiver but I’d like it to turn the tv on & off too but I guess not. And it seems I have to switch it to like the tuner or CD player to power the receiver off I can’t hit the main power button with the tv selected. So I guess these remotes were only meant specifically for same brand components.
I cleaned the circuit board button contact side with some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip since the volume buttons didn't work; now, the + works but not the -. Do you think more cleaning is necessary?

Yes, or the contact is bad...it's happens there is a way to repair it though

There's tabs holding it together, you have to pry it apart,you can use a dull driver like flathead or a thick guitar pick

Didn't see how to disassemble the two halves...I've tried prying it apart, but it's very resistant...
There's clips holding it together, you have to pry carefully
