Now grandpa can finally browse the web again.
How does he browse the web when he was born before the internet
Why can’t he upgrade to windows 11
With Vista it works both ways xD
@@Holdenthereal He cannot upgrade to Windows 11 because he does not see a reason to pay for a new computer.
You forgot than grandpa is on Windows 98
Windows Vista is just so good-looking. Still my all time favorite. Loved that era of design.
I use RetroBar in windows Vista Aero style as my taskbar on Windows 11
It may have left a bad taste in people's mouth at its time, but it sure was fabulous AF.
Should have seen longhorn
I’m surprised there’s no Linux distro that brings back this visual design
edit: it could also include or recreate the flashy Compiz animations from the 2000s (they should be optional since they can be tacky)
@@protocetid Freb, I know what we are going od to today xD
Thank you for covering the Windows Vista Extended Kernel.
Thanks to the project, I no longer see proprietary software as a monolithic black box that the user shall never question or modify. I have learned many things working on this project.
The user mode seems to have hit a dead-end (outside of a few simple functions and bugfixes to be done); most further improvements will have to be in kernel mode to allow the use of many Windows 10 applications, as well as Vulkan and NVENC with Vista-compatible GPU drivers (they actually need DirectX kernel functions introduced in Windows 7, though NVIDIA does not mention the resulting reduced functionality for Vista users). Those will take some time when combined with other commitments.
Nothing else runs better on my HP Z600 and I also have Windows 2000 Professional, Server 2012 and Debian Linux with CDE running there. I also tried several flavours of 10/11 and was thoroughly annoyed with them.
That's so cool modern directx also cool old school CDE
linux user be like:
I can't help but wonder what ReactOS would be like if all of these various projects contributed to it simultaneously.
Have you considered releasing the source of this? This project sounds super interesting.
@@anon_y_mousse I wonder how reactos compare to using Linux with wine or proton
I forgot how damn gorgeous these old windows versions were :(
I love Windows Vista. The best UI, colors, effects, and consistency are the best between all other Windows versions
I think Microsoft is doing this again with Windows 11, but in slower rate due to the number of system parts that haven't been updated maybe 2 decades ago
I feel like if they take their time Windows 12(?) might end up being a decent Windows version. Until then, we have to live with uhh.. Windows 3.1 remnants
Funnily enough, I’ve felt they haven’t been truly cohesive since 9x. (But even that had some 3.x holdover elements. MS can’t shake their technical debt!)
XP and Vista both didn’t rock the boat too much, so most of the 9x elements like scroll bars and progress bars could be replaced in-situ, but for me that always just served to highlight how little had truly changed since the shakeup with 95.
@@MadafakinRio Aero glass was also less glitchy. Something's weird with how they've implemented the rounded corners in Win11, causing some programs to behave a bit erratically, especially when maximizing or going fullscreen (Firefox is really annoying as when making videos fullscreen I now have to do it twice, otherwise it's offset, showing my desktop along the top and left sides of the screen). They also didn't feel the need to completely rewrite the task bar in Vista, so it was still as functional as it had always been (it's bad enough I have to use Start11 for the start menu, but having to use it to get a small taskbar with non-combining windows and full title names I feel is even worse).
window 11 looks too much like some piece of crap mac os based system for me. i really wish microsoft let people customize the look of their system like they did with older os's
@@aarontrupiano9328 Same. I just don't understand why can't they make customizable theme packs, so anyone can use Aero, Luna, Frosted Glass, Fluent, whatever they prefer...
My god i love knowing this exists so much.
I loved Vista back in the day, and still love it today. Now i can get my old Vista Thinkpad out of the drawer and back into regular rotation with safe software
i can finally play inkball again
But running on an unsafe OS. Doesn’t really make that much of a difference if you use safe, patched software on an OS that didn’t receive any security updates since half a decade.
I absolutely adore the love shown towards vista here in the comments. It truly is an underrated version of Windows. I personally even prefer it over 7 (mainly because the taskbar looks more like the older versions of Windows)
Windows 7 was really just a Explorer refresh applied to Vista because it's premier was so bungled by the system requirements changing and the OEM's managing to sabatoge it's rollout with the Vista ready PC program where most of the systems were minimum system requirements for Home Basic and lacked the GPU needed to start Aero and the new Window manager. But OEM's are the reason why Windows Home Server and half of why Windows Media Center failed. They refused to build systems that fit the use case Microsoft was aiming for. Media Center was also killed by the broadcasters killing tuner cards and the death strike was a DirectTV usb receiver getting canceled for Windows media center. Because the networks didn't want people using DVR devices that weren't provided by the cable company.
man… seeing windows vista back in action… how cohesive and well animated that OS was… and then there was Win8, 10, 11…
honestly 11 is looking more and more aesthetically pleasing with every update, but aero is still better. 8 and 10 were a mess
@@dylon4906 8.1 still had the aero animation when you open and close windows but aero glass was the goat
vista truly is the underdog of windows
10 was nice ngl
Damn! Firefox with the Aero title bar is absolute eye candy!
I'd love to see something like this for windows 7 in the future.
and XP
@@jackstar.official79omg luv ur pfp
You can still use Firefox in windows 7, heck almost all of the modern programs still support windows 7
Always felt like this was the most pleasing visual UI of windows
Using vista today, I realize that the most serious problem was just that computers at the time didn't have enough ram. My 2007ish gaming rig is running vista, 4gb ram, and I have nothing to complain about.
In fact, windows 7 is a Vista with a service pack, and looks different for commercial reasons.
The memory requirements for Vista compared to XP were absolutely massive. You could run Windows XP on 512MB fairly well but you'd need 2GB to run Vista without problems. Trouble was that standard PCs were sold at release in 2006/7 with 512MB. Kind of like what's happening with videocards right now ironically enough.
Windows 7 is Vista's SP3 that was released as a new system because MS needed to stop the user bleed, because MS just couldn't tell the OEMs to up their new PC specs for Windows Vista.
The biggest issue was HDDs just being sluggish. Vista on an SSD is absolutely fine, even with 2GB.
@@cromulence that as well - SSDs were a few years away from being even introduced and they cost a fortune when they did!
@@tourmaline07 Yeah, I remember 32 and 64GB SSDs coming onto the scene around '08 but they were mega money. I remember getting a 128GB Crucial M4 (still have it!) back in 2010 for £150 and I thought that was a bargain!
This is very similar to what the Windows Compatibility Toolkit does which has been there since XP days where you can have the versions reported to a specific program vary depending on what you wnat it to see - you can also do other things like remapping file paths so programs see the file system differently than reality.
That doesn't add missing functions though
The extended kernel would also be a great option for organisations like hospitals that are still using Windows Vista so they can still run older Windows XP based custom applications! :)
I love Vista and actually still use it for some things. I had my first run-in with Vista on a Acer Aspire 5315 that i upgraded to a 320GB SATA drive, 3GB of RAM and a Core 2 Duo T7500 because of its P type socket. It ran like a dream especially after SP2. I never really ran into issues with it. I actually didn’t start using Win 7 until probably 2012. Thanks for this video Michael!
I only used Vista for a year before my dad upgraded us to 7. 7 and XP are my fave OSes of all time and I still use them but as a tech savvy adult now I'm fascinated to see the love and dedication put in to improving and preserving Vista, And I wouldn't mind having a system down the line I can use to toy with this kernel and software.
Virtual machine😊
a couple months ago, I forced the instalation of Windows Vista x64 on a 2009 15 inch MacBook Pro. Ran bootcamp 2.1, got all the drivers working flawlessly, installed extended kernel and used it with modern applications even to actually work with and it was an amazing experience
I just wanna say that I love your videos man. I consider them very calming to watch / listen to ❤
i just couldn't understand the people around me who hated vista. ever since it's release i loved it and used it till 7 came out. the ui looked simply stunning and it felt like way ahead of its time. it was just an experience. i loved to mess around with the side bar, set nice wallpapers and just being amazed by aero. miss that time, i think i'll set up my old pc once again and give the extended kernel a try. thanks for the videos, love your content!
The problem actually way it was ahead of it's time. At the start it was very buggy and it would run worse on bad hardware
The biggest issue I had with it was the network stack. It was mega flaky and the number of machines I had to fix that had seemingly dead networking for no reason was infuriating. SP2 fixed that when they backported parts of the Server 2008 (maybe R2?) networking stack to Vista to fix all of the problems.
imo Windows 11 is way worse than Vista and shouldn't be socially acceptable to use it. burn it.
@@the_red_gamer That and the fact that OEMs were still shipping computers in 2006 with 2001 capabilities and no pressure at all to increase performance.
I didn't understand the hate either... Until I tried out Vista RTM very recently and found out just out freaking buggy it was. lmao It's bad. Like Control-Panel-suddenly-becoming-completely-inaccessible bad. Service Pack 1 does WONDERS for Vista and fixes so much, it's insane. It's almost required if you want to seriously use the OS for anything.
So, TL;DR - Vista SP1 is great. Vista RTM is the devil.
I've been waiting on you to do a video on this for a while so I'm glad to see you doing it
It's good to know that there are still people who love this operating system
Your videos are so comfy to watch and listen to!
its cool that people are doing this especially if you cant or dont want to upgrade
This got me out of bed in the morning. I installed it and it works great!
Thanks Michael! My second computer is still running Windows Vista Ultimate and I am unwilling to part with it. With the help of LibreOffice and Mypal browser, it is still managed to be used for my works. Now with this extended kernel, I am sure my second computer can be used for a couple of years more. Really thank you for your videos as always.
A staple, when something goes wrong, it actually goes wrong but sometimes right. When figuring stuff out.
And that's why these are always entertaining. When it comes to a Mjd video.
you mean mjd
i remember the first version of this, it was so cool! now its even cooler
Some crazy stuff right here! Nice work!
Man, i dont know what to say. It's been A LOOOOOONG time since i watched one of ur vids, i wont even try to watch it ALL back. But nice to hear that voice again, its last time was like 2 yrs ago.
Windows Vista, the best looking OS. I really miss the Frutiger Aero design of that era. Now everything is too minimalistic.
I JUST barely removed Vista and started installing windows 7. Then I stumbled across this video
For your MAIN OS!? Use Windows 10 (at least 7)
@@LukeIsASmurf I can't use 10 on a legacy computer. An Alienware area 51m-766 from 2004. Has a pentium 4 processor (Northwood architecture, so it doesn't have NX support)
Cool video, as always!
The most beautiful Windows of all time. My neighbor had bought computer that came with vista, I was 12~13 at that time, it brings nostalgia.
I knew that you were going to do a video on this! Long live Vista!
THIS IS INSANE !! Nice this most be avaiable for all OS
I've used the Extended Kernel for Vista A LOT, it's nice to see you make a video on it!
The reason why software for, say Windows 10, didn't work on Vista is because the Extended Kernel installer re-routes Windows Vista system files to Windows 7, and even then, not all of them, which is why Windows 7 functionality is best, although not on par with Windows 7 proper.
When I've experimented myself, for example, Direct3d 11 wouldn't work, and neither would Windows Installer 5.0 (for some MSI files), would be nice if Win32 somehow worked out a way to get those working too
Also, to the countless people wondering if Steam works: yes! However, the browser doesn't fully work, so you'd need to enable nobrowser, and you'd also need to get the pure extracted files, the installer doesn't always work
Let's go, more Windows Vista stuff :)
This channel is WAY TOO underrated.
Firefox with the windows vista glass ui looks amazing
the next step is to do the same thing with windows 7
In fact there is already a thing for Windows 7 (called VxKex) but currently the development is still at very early stages, so only few applications can effectively run with it (+ it is pretty buggy at the current time, the developer is currently rewriting the whole project, so it will happen).
This is very good. Hopefully the modern games (DX11 and DX12) from Extended Kernel are supported in the future.
Just a few months ago, someone at MSFN also managed to get Office 2013 working on Windows Vista with the extended kernel. It would be interesting if you tried that next time.
Cuando subes otro parche de windows 2000
this is great! i own a windows vista laptop and i REALLY need something to do with it.
As I might be one of the fewer people that actually liked Vista, I'm gonna try this on a project computer on which I wanted to reinstall a backuped Vista version anyway. Thanks
Thanks to you informing me about this extended kernel I now have plans to put my windows vista gaming machine on the internet again once I do some more tinkering with it. My end goal is a perfectly usable version of windows vista in 2024 that can possibly run steam.
Looks like a very useful tool, quite surprised that it works like that.
Also, I love the username at 3:05 at the top of the start menu: *m*
I love Windows Vista. I use Windows Vista Extended Kernel, I'm glad that Windows vista gets something good. Good video by the way keep going with that.
I always wonder what will Vista look like in the future with its beautiful OS.
Now I know.
Thank you! Now i know how to run incompatible Programs on Windows Vista!
I wouldnt have imagined this in my dreams.
as a vista owner/sympathizer* this is incredible news!!!
(not as my main. i’m not that far gone lol)
I would absolutely love this for Windows 7 (still my favourite version of Windows), but I may have to try it for Vista nonetheless. Very cool.
Pretty funny that mods for Windows 95/98 that do a similar thing are seen as things for Retro computer enthusiasts but mods for Vista that do the same thing are seen as people "just messing around".
It's kind of disappointing that the Vista/7 retro community still hasn't risen yet.
Windows Vista is beautiful OS. More better design that W11.
Time to grab my secondary desktop reinstall VISTA on it and run this! I really love Win Vista
It looks so good
My favorite operating system.
This is pretty cool, I might try it out myself eventually as well but anyways, nice video.
Guess its time for me to switch back to Vista. 2006 HERE I COME!!!
Always love Windows Vista. Will there ever be 32 bit release of this anytime soon?
It is crazy how to did this! I never new about this so I will try this!
I still have my copy of Vista somewhere includes 32 & 64, Cool video!
We still have an old Inspiron 530 with Vista SP3 on it.
Absolutely wonderful machine back when it was new.
Now? It's only used as a backup for my old man when he needs to send a file to government once a year.
man vista was so cool imo, it was actually one of my favorite looking windows os
now I'm probably one of the few people who likes windows 11 🗿 although i understand why people would hate it
Nice video as always, i might have to take out my old vista laptop from the closet to test this out :D
I know a friend who uses this whenever they boot into Vista. I have to try this someday!
The Vista Legacy LIVES!
Its interesting how with a couple of updates and simple line codes an old windows version can run modern programs
Ikr. Software venders are working with MS to purposely block us from using newer versions.
I was just looking at this earlier!
I thought that mjd will never do a video about vista's extended kernal
FINALLY DUDE!
edit:your next video should be about XP's one core api, which is similar to vista's extended kernal but is made for windows xp hahahas
This could be very useful for an old Sony notebook I have laying around. Lots of stuff that work under the factory (immensely bloated) Vista install were borked in Windows 7 and then Sony just dropped support altogether. Despite the OS security concerns, this could be a better solution than forcing Windows 10 onto that thing.
Haha I had literally the same thought. I love my VAIOs but omg Sony really made the drivers hard to work with. Not to mention some stuff just could not be installed on a clean install.
@@Sparky400 did Sony not load hardware drivers on to Windows Update I clean installed Windows 10 on a Older Dell XPS laptop and most of the Divers for it loaded from Windows Update the few I. Had to download from dell the Windows 7 64 bit ones worked.
How is it that Firefox manages to look better on a system it was never meant to be run on, than on the latest Windows 10?
Great work! I‘m already waiting for one for Windows 7
i remember this on school laptops in 2019
Now I can revive my old PC!
thanks is very important video
wow, this is neat
Windows Vista & (7) used to look so unique lookin' & kind of relaxing.
yay, new video
Will the extended kernel work with the latest Nvidia Drivers, and/or allow DX11 games to run?
I so hope someone develops an extended kernal in the future years for windows 7 and windows 8.1 , i still enjoy using these operating systems its nice to get on my pc and have full control of my experience , unlike windows 10 and newer
Just use Linux? Then you actually have full control
Actually, you don't own commercial software. You're only licensed to use it. It's stated in the license terms.
This not only works on Windows Vista, but also Wndows Server 2008 ("R1"). Solved the issue of Running MySQL 5.7 on it.
Hi there! As you might know that Windows Vista is also compatible with the updates intended for Windows Server 2008 and I am curious about something. Should we install the external kernel after installing WS2008 updates or before them on Windows Vista?
This is really cool. Bit of a shame it's a 64-bit thingy only, as that was not taken for granted with OEM installs back then, contrary to, say, Windows 10, whose 32-bit version is a bit of a legacy rarity. I have a couple of Vista machines, but if using Ex Kernel means I have to install a new copy of Vista on them, well, I suppose I might as well install 7 instead, which has the same hardware requirements.
AW MAN I NEEDED THAT PROGRAM FOR MY OLD PC. But oh well. Got a Dell Optiplex 390
I never expected this video to exist, and neither it be next to a video about TinyVista? That exists?
is there any similar program but for windows 10? For example, making an older windows 10 to have a newer windows 10 version build number
we need this for windows xp
I still use windows vista to this day as my daily OS😬😬
om-
Damn, that's make me wanna using vista again. Kinda want to build a pc just for that purposes lol
there is also one core api for windows 98, 2000, xp which acts the same way as extended kernel
I'm going to have to look into an extended kernel solution next year when more programs start dropping Windows 8.1 support. I have very little desire to leave 8.1, even if it leaves me on a vulnerable OS. I'd much rather deal with security vulnerabilities rather than a OS that is so bad I want to pull my hair out using it (10/11)
Although windows 10 has gotten good-ish in the last few years and isn't getting new buggy features, I still agree with you. For me windows 8.1 is the top.
Thank u Bill Clinton
As a fellow 8.1 user, try out MX Linux! It's by far the best Windows alternative I've found. Rock-solid stability, lots of in-house built system mangement tools, and an advanced hardware support kernel are just some of its features.
Security vulnerabilities are really overplayed when it comes to the average home user. Just stay away from shady sites, use an adblocker, and don't download random junk and you'll be fine.
windows 7 is just a vista themed software as long as the software still made for 7 ... vista will still alive !!
Would love to see a similar solution for windows 7 to allow it to run Windows 10 apps.
Could you please tell me how did you get the aero to work without problems ? Thanks
Does this Extended Kernel for Windows Vista, allow to install drivers, designed for Windows 7?
I have installed Windows Vista on AMD Ryzen system, but USB is not working, only PS/2 could be used to control OS.
My HP Elitebook 8460p "Nostalgia Box™" is about to become a whole lot more useful.
Finally i Install vista on my main gaming rig
Ah, so basically it’s KernelEx, had to use it on XP a few times.
A program used to run XP programs on XP? Sounds like a bandaid for cancer
@@redstonegod296 you can set kernelex’s compatibility mode for future operating systems as well as old ones.
Hi Micheal! Love your videos, I hope you do more! Nice video tho!
I've been trying to get the extended kernel for ages, but the required updates make my laptop bluescreen...
