In today’s video I dive in and take a look to see if Sonic Advance is still good. Enjoy! Игры
I just love the character spritework in Sonic Advance. Every character feels so... alive. It would be cool if someone at SEGA would greenlight a HD remake for the Sonic Advance trilogy, complete with widescreen.
It does feel alive, such a beautifully animated game!
Marius Urucu too bad THQ has the western rights to the game.
Seriously? That sucks. But wait, I thought they were bankrupt, or are we talking about THQ Nordic?
Marius Urucu I dont like sprite style, kinda hate it
Jesse King probably THQ Nordic, anyways the reason why the Android rerelease is available in Japan only.
Protip with Amy: if you hammer a spring (which includes both aerial attacks), it'll launch you much further, giving it a whole other set of abilities.Considering the huge hitbox of the air attack, it allows for some very fancy stuff.
Good to know!
the advance series were legendary, and they still are
that sprite-work is just so damn fantastic for a GBA console
Sonic Advance is one of my favorite 2d Sonic games. Not as good as Rush and 3&K, but I like it a lot.
It is a very likable game!
Rush has naff physics tho
You’re going to go places my friend. If you keep posting these high quality videos! I love em’ :)
Fingers crossed ;)
woah necros?! what are you doing here? hello there! :)
sonic advance is my first sonic game i played in 2008
and since then i like tails
I suspect the Advance series was the entry point for many Sonic fans. And in my opinion, it's a pretty great place to start :D
Amy is so fun in this game. Too bad she won't be in Mania.
Gnidel Maybe they can make her DLC
Or if not there will probably be Amy mods for PC
Amy did make an appearance in Sonic Mania. She appears in the Metallic Madness Boss where Eggman has her grab Sonic and she explodes like a bomb 😃😂😆🤣😅
Actually, she's horrible
Try beating Egg Rocket as amy
Sonic Advance Series needed to be remastered and revamped for Nintendo 3DS.
I wish +Sega would make it happen
That does seem like a no brainer doesn't it?
I like how you go into detail with every character. Cheers
Thanks!
Good job. GameStop is having a retro game sale today and I just bought Sonic Advance and few others. This was the video that convinced me to get it.
Right on, I hope you enjoy it :)
implantgames Thanks
You sir have a great sense of balance when talking about the goods & bads. That's awesome. I loved sonic advance. & Those little things don't bother me either.
Right on, thanks :)
Sonic Advance is easily my second favorite Sonic game of all time. My first is S3&K.
Right on man! I'm not sure where it fits for me, so many amazing 2D Sonic titles :)
implantgames Hopefully Sonic Mania will be up there too
Mave Dustaine Yeah but 2d and 3D games are definitely different categories. Heroes is definitely 1st or 2nd place to me.
Many say the controls are slipper but since I used to them all I see is amazing 3d level design inspired by the classics. Plus that soundtrack.
You also have to respect how the creators had the new and expert players in mind with the different teams, even if they kinda forced all 4 stories on us for the Last Story. Postgame Heroes is best Heroes.
Update: Mania is f***g amazing. It's tied with 3&K for me, so objectively, it has become the proper Sonic 4 we all wanted (sorry Advance, I still love you. Sega please remake/rerelease the Advance Trilogy with updated screen size and soundtrack)
It does also make it puzzling that the Sonic 1 GBA port turned out so poorly.
Yeah, no kidding! Seems like they should have just moved the graphic assets over to the Advance engine, rather then doing a half-assed port.
Actually this is exactly what there did problem was the advance engine and the really large sprites from the Megadrive just don't work all that well together there ether would have to remake all sonic 1 graphics in the Sonic advance style or recreate the game from scratch or actually emulate the original rom.
+Ryno Behnke
Sorry for the necro, but I'd like to mention a fan actually remade Sonic 1 for the GBA and it worked perfectly
@@therapeface4153 Sorry for the late respond I saw your answer just now.
Anyway Taxman however for his remake did rebuild Sonic 1 from scratch for the GBA (what was one of my suggestions) while Sega just throw way to big sprites into the Sonic Advance engine which just can't handle sprites this large.
This games animation showed what the GBA could do. The GBA was magic in my hands......well that and the McRib sandwich.
:D
3:29
i think Hydrocity from sonic 3 Handled The water pretty well
i HATE water levels even with that in mind Hydrocity is my favorite zone from the hole series
First ever Sonic game I ever played as a 6 year old kid. Needless to say my childhood was full of blast processing goodness. Love this game so much.
Only 8.6k subscribers? wtf this content is very well made & thought out, keep up the great work, subscribed.
Welcome and thanks :)
implantgames Thanks for replying, dude I hope that you continue to have this style of editing within your content, it's just so pleasing to watch while learning and understanding an opinion on subject matters (in this case Sonic Advance )
this game, along with the later two should be on the wii u virtual console in the us
Indeed!
saizerboy and everywhere else.
Now it should be on the Switch
Hopefully, I'd love it if they did this, words cannot express how happy I'd be if they did. Sadly though, I highly doubt they'll do this EVER in a million years
I always enjoyed playing as Amy in this game much more than the other three characters. Her gameplay is an example of how a few clever tweaks here and there can result in a character that offers a completely different gameplay experience, one that is a mix between traditional platformers because of her different jumps (she kind of feels Mario-like in a good way) and action games because of having to attack using a melee weapon instead of simply landing on the enemie's heads. At first it's normal that a player has to adapt to her different moves and the fact she's vulnerable due to not curling into a ball like the others, but once mastered, Amy is a beast in this game: she not only beats all bosses faster than everyone else (her attacks have a huge reach as well as her down + attack move that is performed in mid-air let's her constantly bounce on bosses, draining up to 7 hit points in one go) but her three jumps allows expert players to really exploit the perks of the momentum-based gameplay to build speed using almost every slope, loop and other such curved surfaces, giving it a very involved, parkour-like experience. Really hope Sega/Sonic Team/Chris Whitehead can add Amy in Mania as DLC, or better yet, feature her in a sequel.
Nah fam, she's just bad in this game.
It's weird, I don't think of Sonic Advance too often but I definitely played it just as much if not more than the genesis games as a kid growing up. It's a pretty great game and I don't know why I don't go back to it more often now
I think the Advance trilogy has really flown under the radar for the past 15 years.
You're in for a treat on sonic adventure 2. Hope to see a review of that one
gamecreaterdude13 it's terrible, the only good parts in that game are
Sonic, Shadow and the chao garden...
Mech levels are legit trash but treasure hunting is alright.
Eddie The Head the treasure hunting became a stupid goose chase. SA1 did that better. As for the mechs, I'll admit that it was pretty cooling playing as Eggman, but Tails? That dude can take better care of himself without a mech.
"The mech levels are fun too, and the treasure levels, although very frustrating at times, are a good challenge." No.
Legit the only good parts of SA2 are the Sonic Levels and even then SA1 is still better in that regard...
I love and adore the Sonic Advance trilogy oh so much, man, with the third installment within it being my absolute favorite of the three spectacular games.
Great and awesome review.
Remember when Dimps created GOOD Sonic games?
Alex Martinez Dat profile pic tho, Tikal behave yourself
Yeah. Sonic Colours, Generations, and Lost World.
Sadly they've had a lot of hit and miss in between Advance and those. Advance 2, 3, Rush, Unleashed... Not great.
Cao Cao you thought Lost World from Dimps was good? That was a shit fest. As for the others, those were all good
Hwan Niggles It had its issues but its a way more faithful attempt at 2D sonic gameplay in 3D. Controls are way better than Adventure style games and its not as repetitive as the Boost games. I'd much rather they work at improving and refining that style than introduce gimmick after gimmick to the same formula that evidently isn't attention grabbing anymore.
@Hwan Niggles Lost World is mixed some people hate it some people like it is half liked and half hated I believe
They said Sonic Mania was Sonic 4. More like Sonic 7.
Sonic Advance: The OG Sonic Mania.
Great in-depth review man!
Thank you very much :)
Dude...why do you only have a little over 10k subs...OUTRAGEOUS! YOU NEED MOAR
If you build it, they will come. I hope. Thanks :)
I'm not hating on you, but a lot of people seem to hate the difficulty brought with Pits and hazards.
I don't think it's that bad, it makes the game harder
I think it's the cheapness of pits and random hazards that bothers the over analytical types :)
if the game is hard
then play as tails
Difficulty? No. Cheapness and poor design? Yes.
It's not harder because you lose one
life unavoidably and then you know what to do.
I love me some challenge in a video game
Excellent game I wish I had. Playing GBA games on an emulator is kinda not really good. I mean, the emulation is perfect, but feels weird to me. Let's wait for Sonic Mania :)
I do like the subtle flaws offered by the Game Boy Player for the Game Cube :)
You don't have to beat the game with everyone to unlock the true final boss, just have all emeralds and beat x-zone with sonic
Great game ^-^ I have very fond memories of this one as well as its sequels. And god I LOVED the music in all of them.
I really loved playing as Amy! She was my favorite.
I'm not often impressed with music on the GBA, but the Sonic Advance trilogy is just stunning!
I do remember highly enjoying this game when I finally purchased it like 6 years ago I think it was. I was definitely old enough to remember when this game first came out, it's just for some reason I just never got a Sonic game on the GBA at the time
Egg Rocket Zone is a masterpiece worthy of inclusion in Sonic Generations - 3DS _or otherwise_ - and I will fight you over it.
Sonic Advance was an awesome debut for Sonic on a Nintendo console, and in my country my favourite game publisher Infogrames distributed the title.
Infogrames was such an awesome developer/publisher, I remember they always seemed to have the best Dreamcast games :)
Wacky Races, Looney Tunes: Space Race and Test Drive Le Mans/Le Mans 24 Hours are really fun racers. They did have the bad racers, such as Micro Machines, which only saw a PS2 release in North America but in the UK (where I live) you can also get it on the Nintendo GameCube and Xbox, where it was branded under the Atari name here.
A pair of my favorite Jaguar games were also developed in France, Super Burnout and Rayman :)
I actually beat Sonic Advance with Amy before the other characters.
That's an achievement... She can't even spin dash...
now this is like asking "is water still good to drink?" of course it is great
Haha, perhaps :) I'm dreading the day I revisit Sonic Adventure 2....
@@implantgames this has aged like fine wine
Sonic Advanced was such a fun game when I first played it. I enjoyed the levels and how they all flowed from point A to point B but I didn't like the art style of the characters in this game. They looked lanky but squished at the same time but aside from that and the bonus stages feeling a little dull it's still a remarkable game!
Very good review!!
Another one great vid bro😀
Another great comment :D
Anthony Starks
I think that you're first, so you get a Crown: 👑
I LOVE the advance series!!!❤💜❤😊😄😎 Sonic Advance 3 is my favorite. :3
Right on!
Violet thebat curse you
Mangak Ayob So she's wrong for having an opinion? Fuck you.
Yep, the soundtrack to all of these games rocks! I really enjoyed 3 as well, would have to be my favourite.
Are you my Identical twin?
I love the 2D Genesis sonic games and picked sonic advance 1 & 2 the other day for $5 each. They have not disappointed at all
Game Boy Advance is kind of awesome like that!
The N-Gage port however xD
I had a friend with an N-Gage back in the day, don't think he had this though.
I was actually the official Danish winner of a big N-Gage promotional contest.
It was a huge mess but I did end up getting a trip to Paris and an N-Gage with two games. So the console will always be a bit sentimental to me :)
Man, that is actually kind of amazing!
Captain N finally someone that understands
Only problems I have with this game the the slow mo run animation when walking or building up speed. The fact that Sonic exits his spindash ball for. while in the air sometimes. And that they capped some of the momentum based jumps. Making the platforming a little harder as well as getting on top and bouncing off the top of enemies classic Sonic style.
I got into gaming kind of late, so GBA was my first proper gaming system and Sonic Advance was the first I played on it (with V-Rally 3). So much nostalgia... That said, I totally sucked at video games back then, so it took me a very long time to finish the game, even with Tails. But it's kind of funny that my first two games had arguably one of the best soundtracks (Sonic) and graphics (V-Rally 3) on the system (both of which I bought totally blindly, I had no internet connection).
I suspect Sonic Advance was the entry point for quite a few Sonic fans. Such a lovely game :)
It's interesting how two classic Sonic fans can have such different takes on the Advance games, haha. I really, really don't like this one. I found enemy and spike placement super-cheap, and the spikes that sheath and un-sheath have audio cues in the MD/Gen games, but not in Advance. Also, the music pretty average for me (I couldn't recall any of the tunes before this video), and I found the level design all over the shop. I'm also not a fan of the use of colours - barring Ice Mountain, everything looks a little dull to my eyes. It's a shame, because the fundamentals, in regards to control, are there for me. Still, great video! I'm happy you like Advance series. I wish I could come around to it... no matter how hard I want to though, I just can't :P
Another awesome comment I don't have an adequate response for :D For me, Sonic Advance pretty much feels like a proper sequel to 3&K. Level design is sprawling, though thoughtful, much like 3. Controls are perfect, though the melee attacks feel a bit tacked on. Perhaps there are some uses for them I just didn't discover. I feel the enemies and spikes are an ok compromise maintaining some of the trial and error inherent to the classics, while dealing with the drastically resolution (screen crunch). Or perhaps I've just played way too much Zool 2...
Do Advance 2 & 3
Agreed
I have only played the Gameboy Advance emulator. I've noticed it has a lot of good games. I was unaware of or maybe just overlooked this game. I must thank you. This will entertain me on those days off, where you just want to sit back stream videos and play a game.
this is by far my favorite sonic game of all time!! i played that game nonstop as a child 0/
Thank you for you really honest overview of Sonic Advance, I feel like this game gets unfairly bashed when it really is a solid Sonic title. I will agree there are a few frustrating bits but after playing the game many times, it's not really an issue.
Amazing video by the way ^_^
I grew up with Sonic Advance... I love it so much... The one thing that I don't have in common with people who enjoyed the Sonic Advance series plus battle is that I enjoy playing as Tails more than anyone
i love your videos soo much explanation
One of my favorite games for sure, I mean, I did Let's Plays on them xD But! Sonic Advance 3 was my first in the trilogy, and I still think it's the best one, especially in the soundtrack department. Still great though.
i love this game so much ^^ and i always play as Amy (she's my fave character in the series)
If you like the OST for this game, then you should listen to some music for the Super Robot Wars series. Namely the GBA version of OG 1-2. As well as A and J. Great osts and show the GBA in its best form
The Sonic Advance series is a must have for any sonic fan, it's too bad that Nintendo and Sega haven't decided to Re-release them on Virtual console yet. They're great games! Fast paced high speed action with a great challenge, it's everything a sonic fan needs.
Press b while doing amy's foward leap, its hilarious XD
I recently played through the first few levels of this for the first time, expecting it to be pretty average. I was pleasantly surprised. I even like it better than a few of the Genesis titles such as Sonic 1 and 3. I still like 2 the best.
you missed one thing -
up right down right L right R right A in the character select -
starting from sonic
Asked for a GBA specifically for this game. I didn't find it as good as the Genesis titles, but I still spent so many hours playing it.
cant really go wrong with these sort of games + they never really age too bad as they'll always be fun to just pick up and play.
I love Sonic Advance. Definitely one of my favorite Sonic games. Also, u forgot to mention that Amy Rose can jump higher and farther if she uses her hammer on the springs.
This is the real Sonic 4
I like this 2D sonic game but still really classic GBA and it seems to be fun
I loved it besides the special stages I had to save state the hell out of it , unfortunately never saw final boss cuz my vita stopped charging on my Amy run.
For anyone who's interested and doesn't already know, there's a ROM hack of Sonic 2 called Sonic 2 Pink Edition. In that you can play as Amy, taken from this Sonic Advance version, and it's really interesting and very well done. Her completely different set of abilities really change the game up and bring a fresh twist to a classic.
info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_2:_Pink_Edition
I still think it holds up quite well. This is the only one in the trilogy that stays true to the Sonic Genesis formula. Close to it.
I remember getting it on GBA when I got the Black GBA. The Sonic Trilogy is quite awseome in my book. But not as close to the Genesis and GameGear Quadrilogy.
Sonic the fighters was the very first game in a Nintendo platform on the GameCube
Before I watch this video. I love this game. Its amazing. Its modern sonic in classic sonic formula. Love It.
I remember hating this game when it came out because I had ridiculously high Sonic 3 & Knuckles style hopes and expectations. Playing it today it's not perfect but it's pretty good. It's a solid game that understands how classic Sonic should be more-so than Sonic 4, Generations (I like it but it's undeniably off) and Forces.
Personally I thought the Egg Rocket was way harder than Cosmic Angel. When you don't know where you're going the first time you'll end up having to repeat segments and you run out of time. It is a bit easier once you know where you're going.
Sonic advance: its fun from the genesis games and has some good gameplay
Sonic mania: *THE GREATEST SONIC GAME OMG THATS IT PERIOD YAY*
It's so weird that these guys went on to make the nightmare that is Sonic 4.
This is what Sonic 1 GBA should’ve sorta been like
If only Dimps put this much effort into Sonic 4...
Played the hell out of this as a kid, but the only thing I like about this game's second half is Egg Rocket's music. The cheap-Dimps-level-design seeds were definitely being planted in this one.
I just cant look at the running animation without dying a little
Do yourself a favour, Chris. If you ever get the chance, try this game with the GameBoy Player + GBInterface on your CRT. Authentic 240p and no GameBoy Player stuttering truly compliment the game and make it shine even more.
Someday :)
Yes
I tried playing it again for the first time in years the other day. I beat it before but didn't have all the chaos emeralds. So I try getting them and omg the stages suck. I can never line up with the rings and grab them even though I clearly em. They're kinda broken. Rest of the game still holds up though. Sequels? Not so much.
Can Geico save you 15% or more on car insurance?
Is Sonic Advance Still Good?
to be honest this game was my childhood and maybe the reason why i hate ari and casino levels while loveing ice and water level
* Is Sonic Advance still AS good?
Personally, I liked the animation and pacing and the neat abilities of all the characters and the variety it brought to the play; but the levels themselves always felt a bit too linear and segmented to compare to the OG Sonic Trilogy; which makes me think there was a little bit of lost potential in what's otherwise a wicked-cool adaptation. But I did like Advance 1/3 a lot for what they were.
it kind of sucks that it's nearly impossible to find any of the advance games under $300 like not even at thrift shops XD
Haha :D I doubt I paid more than $5 for any of them. Reminds me of the classic trilogy...
I paid about 16 dollars for it on Amazon.
Fred Meyer Tfw i have all 3 of them... 2 was the hardest to find so i just stole it from a friend
Wait, did that second reviewer at the 1:00 mark just call Sonic and co. marsupials?
Yep. Sometimes looking back at all reviews is funny :) In Sonic R a quoted a reviewer who called the soundtrack J-Pop.
Old reviews*
Sadly I missed out on the advance series. I did play them later but I still don't own the games :(
No Atari 2600? No Sonic Advance? Who are you!??!?! :D
Someone who clearly needs more games :P
get emulator to run it
That final boss really was bullshit. I used to just crouch down at the corner at the end to avoid the light beam and cannonball and wait for eggman to pass to get a chance to strike him
Sonic Advance: The REAL Sonic Mania!
Sonic 2 was the first sonic i played when i was 3, but sonic advance 3 is the first i owned. And boy did i fucking love it. Even though i only started progressing when i was 6 because my dumbass 4 year old brain thought dying = good/fun
Dodoria is weird in the abridged world
Edit: haha lol last time I comment while watching two vids at a time
I don't know why but this made me lol. Thanks haha :)
hell ye
I lost that game a long time ago
I hope you find it!
Haven't watched the video yet, but I assume the answer is yes. Absolutely. In my opinion it's the sonic mania that "We never got"
Makes you wonder how Dimps could do so much right with Sonic Advance and then so much wrong with Sonic 4: Ep 1
Sonic Advance 1, 2 and 3 were okay on the GBA, but the series lacked Super and Hyper transformations, giant special stage rings, the Super Emeralds from Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the special stages suck, and I never cared for the modern Sonic-style gameplay.
The best Sonic game imo.
this was the game that cemented dimps success for years to come, and with the exception of sonic 4, i've loved every game they've made
I suspect many people got their first taste of Sonic with these Advance games.
implantgames
this and the sonic adventure remakes on GC since they came out around the same time AND worked together (for the choa thing)
Wait Dimps made this? Like Xenoverse Dimps? Holy shit
You still could have talked about the Super Sonic boss just looked up gameplay of it and show it and talked about it.
No sir. In hindsight I should have completed the game.
So... Sonic mania v(1)?
All were an 8/10
Then Sonic Mania.
For me, it's way better than Sonic Advance 2 and 3. I like it almost like Sonic 2. Only thing i hate the Bonus stages.
This game even sold more than 2 million!
