    Interesting analysis Frames.
I agree with most everything. I have long said (and so have you) that Nikon was the 'sleeping giant' and it is apparent now that with the release of the low and mid-tier Expeed 7 cameras hopefully in the next couple months, Nikon will be the unchallenged leader in the hybrid 35mm digital camera market space boasting: Class leading AF, Best build quality, Best ergonomics, Best RAW files, Top level 'color science' for Jpegs - this is subjective but there is no doubt that Nikon is among the best here, far and away the best mount in the superior Z mount where it is now already possible to convert all Sony E mount, Canon EF mount, Leica M mount, and Fuji X mount lenses at near native to native functionality - the same is not and can never be true in reverse. It will not be long before there is a Canon RF to Z mount. Of course, why would you want to adapt (unless of course you already own these other lenses) as the Nikon Z mount lenses are themselves class leading, The S line lenses are all best in class with most of them being the very best example of their focal length in the market, with the ones that are not are among the best 2-3 variants from any brand: best build quality, silent AF, suppressed focus breathing, and optical superiority. Nikon literally grinds their own glass and has been making optics for 100 years - something that none of the other brands come close to.
Nikon made a reputation as the premier Japanese brand in the late 50's and through the 60's and 70's with the introduction of the F mount and the F line of cameras. At this time they were competing with Leica and the international war journalists during the Korean war figured out that they were getting equal (if not better) quality from their Nikons with F mount lenses for 20% of the price and they all started shifting to Nikon. The world followed suit.
Nikon fell down a little in the 80's when they mistakenly (maybe) decided not to update the F mount and allowed Canon to surpass them with the newer EOS system. Today, the tables have turned again. The Z mount is the modern analog to what the EOS was in the late 80's only much, much better and far more versatile.
Welcome back Nikon - it looks as though with the Z mount you are here to stay this time.
    -PD

Hi Frames. Interesting overview on the cameras mentioned. My one disagreement would be that the Z9 is definitely a Top Tier camera, not Top Pro camera. I currently own both the Z9 and Z8. In the past I've owned the D850, a couple of D750's, a Z6ii and a Z7ii. I agree that they are all wonderful cameras. Yes, I may grab the Z8 more often than the Z9, primarily because of size, but I shoot far more images with the Z9 because it's the one I depend on for my serious shoots. And the Z9 only weighs about one pound more than the Z8 (about the same when the Z8 battery grip is installed).
A couple of things about the Z9 that I felt you either glossed over, or omitted: 1. You mentioned the Z9 battery pack and grip (I also have the Nikon battery grip for the Z8). The battery in the Z9 is nothing short of amazing when I am faced with shooting several thousand frames over the course of several hours. The Z8 battery is better than many give it credit for, but it falls far short of the Z9's, and even with the Z8 battery grip attached, the Z9 battery is still significantly better. And, 2. I don't believe you really mentioned the Z9's video capabilities versus the Z8. For video, the larger body of the Z9 helps dissipate heat, allowing for longer shooting without overheating. Also, the dual CFExpress card slots in the Z9 are very helpful when shooting video, backing up files to the second card, and for those day-long shoots where you'd rather not worry about filling up the memory cards, or the inferior read/write speed of SDXC cards (found in the second slot of the Z8) and lower available memory capacity of the SD cards. If you also consider the better weather-sealing of the Z9, the more aesthetically pleasing battery-grip solution on the Z9, and the robustness of construction, the $1500 premium for the Z9 is money well-spent and that cost shouldn't prevent the Z9 from being on the same level as the Z8. I often shoot with both the Z9 and Z8 over opposite shoulders. I find it easy to move from one camera body to the other as the ergonomics are quite similar.
By the way, I'd probably still own the D850 and Z7ii except that I rely heavily on the frames/per/second capability of both the Z9 and Z8. Also, the D850 (with battery grip attached) sounds like a Gatling gun from the U.S. Civil War.. With the Z7ii, it's a great landscape, studio and travel camera, but I shoot a lot of movement photography and the autofocus shortcomings, the EVF delay, and the less stellar fps led me to abandon the Z7ii when I bought the Z9. I still love listening to your thoughts and suggestions, Frames. I consider this ranking dispute a minor quibble, but I had to share my thoughts on the Z9 versus the Z8.

Very interesting review and makes me rethink to sell my D850/750 after having bought the Z8. The later excels with the autofocus capabilities but given the many good lenses I have for the DSLR I think I will use the D's for "quiet" situations whereas the Z for more action oriented ones. So far I only bought one Z leans (24-120mm F/4) that should serve me for travel and general purpose. For portrait the D850 is great especially with the 80mm F/1.4.

if my D8 50 didn’t require so much micro focus adjustments. I’d probably still be shooting it now. I’d even after sending it to Nikon. It was just such a hit or miss with accuracy especially sports events. I couldn’t take it anymore. I’ve wasted a ton of moneybuying and selling until now I have settled with the Z8 and I am finally happy on my journey to the perfect camera.

With the 2cf express slots and that fantastic battery, z9 is top tier for me. Agree it's bulky. But it's a beast.

While I agree with your observations and classification, I would love to see a different approach to the ranking system - if I needed to buy a new camera tomorrow.
You now made a "tier rating" [tier*nothing] with cameras in the cells. I would replace that by "camera*use-case" rating with e.g. 1..5 stars in the cells.
As I sold my Z 7ii the other day and replaced it by a Z 8, yes, this is the best Nikon I ever used in the past almost 50 years. The Z lenses outperform the F mount lenses. That's real progress.
The Z 7ii is the best landscape-only camera out there, if we factor-in price, for example.
But shooting portraits in my studio got frustrating quickly when the ambient light is low enough for the sitter's pupils to slightly dilate (which gives a more attractive look in the portrait).
The Z 7ii would be slow at that, AF-hunt, and at LV 7 already become "uncertain" about the focusing.
The Z 8 is very fast at that and much more confident - the difference is at least a few LV (LV=EV@ISO100) that are critical to success.
If you read between these lines, then you might think, ah, "recognition AF AI" is important but what is very relevant is down to what LV the camera still is fast and confident.
That will differ in different use cases: single human portraits, groups in events, static posed versus reportage, sports, animals, birds in flight, etc. The camera being able to focus at LV -10 (Z f)
If we have photographic use cases as one axis in the table then the recognition AF AI becomes the third dimension in this matrix.
That is more complex or work, but in fact one thing we are deciding on.
You can make it a single 2D matrix again with the cameras in the cells with their stars for that cell.
As to the Z f, compare the D800 (has an OLPF) to the D800E (Eliminated OLPF) using the same sharpest F-mount lens in both cases. Identical cameras, identical sensors. Shocking difference in sharpness. Then compare a 24MP D camera (always has OLPF) to the 36MP D800 and the difference in sharpness is not exciting. Also compare the 36MP D800E to the 45MP D850 (no OLPF either) and the difference in sharpness is not so exciting. The Z f has an OLPF. This filter was introduced to make deBayerisation easier. In the Bayer conspiracy, we shoot with a colour-blind sensor that sees the entire humanly visible spectrum and with a colour filter grid that precisely aligns with the photosites in the sensor, we get a raw file that contains monochrome (mono=single; chrome=colour) data elements. These data elements need to be turned into RGB pixels by deBayerisation. We can argue that 90% of colour noise and luminance noise is inadequate deBayerisation and has nothing to do with the sensor or camera. Improved deBayerisation is what the 36MP and 45MP without OLPF need. Topaz and DxO made that already available some years ago, Adobe updated Camera Raw only last year - 10 years after the D800E.
With that OLPF and reduced sharpness, I would expect IBIS to seemingly do better in the Z f. I don't think it actually does better.
Also, the sensor in the Z 9 and Z 8 has many more additional rows and columns outside the "effective" image area. I imagine that the Z 8/9 use that for IBIS in software (and a part as help for edge-deBayerisation).

They def. need to have a million Z6III because that's going to sell like HOT CAKES! lol SO part of the delay might be that they are producing as many as they can as they know that the Z6/Z6II people, which is the line that has sold the most from all their lines, are waiting impatiently.

I am surprised that Nikon hasn't yet refrehsed the Z5 and Z50 ... both pretty old.
Z6 III is around the corner , not sure what would happen with the Z7 II though , maybe discontinue or 60 MP senseor , remains to be seen.
Meanwhile love my Z9 and Zf !! both server me well in thier own right.
I bought the Z9 when it lanched (with a wating list of 8 months) , given the chance I'd still pick it over a Z8 for the better battery life ,Dual CF , durability and heat managment .
I sometimes shoot very long days and the confidence it gives is priceless.
At this point , it's only replacement would be a Z9 II :)

@@FramesTM the ZF, with it's poor ergonomics will probably give you waay waay more keeper shots than the "Pro-tier" D850 or Z7ii in ANY given situations, but still, I don't really understand your definition of "Pro"...since technology is constantly evolving, you shouldn't mesh with built and technology and vise versa....heck my D4s is a Pro body too, but I would grab my ZF over it 10 times out of 10

@@nethbtpart of being pro tier comes with ergonomics, button layout, build, etc. i would argue that the z7ii is not getting you the shots you want. I plan on getting the zf when use prices drop but to say z7ii or even z7 is not pro tier is crazy. That d4 is still a pro camera and could get any shot done.
