  • Bio By She Rox All Female Bands:Los Angeles, California based Fanny, began in the late 1960's under The Svelts, however changed their name to Fanny shortly before their 1970 debut album on Reprise records, leaving them the third all female playing band to be signed to a major record label, Goldie and The Gingerbreads being the first, and The Pleasure Seekers being the second, but Fanny broke ahead of the Gingerbreads soft pop sound and the Pleasure Seekers raw garage rock and delivered a no frills straight ahead rock and roll sound unheard of from any all female bands to date. Fanny released five studio albums and were the very first all female band to have two U.S Top 40 hits before calling it quits in 1975. Yet even with such a milestone for women musicians, the band never reached the commercial triumphs that the Go-Go's did just five years after Fanny disbanded. Fanny were the true innovators for female rock bands, dubbed the "Godmothers of Chick Rock" and rightfully so,never truly gained the recognition due to them which is a true transgression to the history of rock music, and female musicians. Fanny is # 1 on the She Rox Volume 5 Countdown for paving the road for future all female rock and roll bands. I second that! I've loved this song since I first heard it in the spring of 1972. It was on this flexi disc which came with an issue of the New Musical Express:
      www.discogs.com/Rolling-Stones-Curved-Air-Fanny-Untitled/release/749713
The flexi was published to promote the Stones' Exile album. On the B-side was a song by Curved Air, and then this glorious hard rocker by Fanny, which I played until the disc wore out. "We're clearing the way for a new order!" They sure were. Took me forever to get hold of the album "Fanny Hill", a great record from a great band of true pioneers.

I know I'm a johnny come lately to Fanny but count me on the list to sign for them to be inducted to the rock n roll hall of fame. These ladies simply kick ass. Since I found them I haven't gotten enough of listening to their music. And make no mistake - this ain't girly girl poptart stuff like the Go-Gos or Bengals. These ladies are bringin it for real. Real music. With heart and soul. And great vocals and harmonies. Just fucking awesome, and at 43 years old I am sorry I have never heard of them till my youtube feed suggested them here in 2021.
To June and Jean Millington, Alice de Buhr, and Nicky Barklay: may your music live on forever and be remembered in the same breath as the other great bands of the era. You were just as stunning and incredibly talented as all the other 70s rock bands we all know well. It's a shame we didn't get to know you just as well. And we hope in the future that changes! You deserve to be remembered and cherished!

Since the world has these great recordings from these extraordinary musicians of every instrument (including great vocals) they played, FANNY's work should be enough to include the group in the R&RHOF because the proof can be listened to. Other groups have been inducted long after their last performance, and some with less musicianship. Hard to imagine FANNY not even being considered for R&RHOF at any time! FANNY's artistry is EXTRAORDINARY, SUPERB! They played, & sounded better than other acts already in the HOF, absolutely no question. They also wrote their own songs to boot! Makes one think there's got to be an unstated/hidden reason for keeping them out, because it certainly is NOT lack of talent!

The thing I loved about Bowie was he never blew his own trumpet in interviews (marching powder notwithstanding) but he always gave other artists their due. What he said about Fanny was so spot on. Nickey was probably the best musically among them but the other were hot on her heels. Jean was solid as a rock, Alice was barely believable and of course the supercalafrajelistically cool baby June was pure gravy with a healthy dose of molten lava. R. I. P. David

From the 2003 Nicole Blizzard interview of Jean Millington posted on technodyke following the release of the Fanny retrospective on Rhino.
N: That (Rock and Roll Survivors) album did have the distinction of yielding Fanny's highest charting single, which I believe is about David Bowie.
J: Right, "Butter Boy", which is really interesting...[laughter]...the song that I wrote that Nickey helped me finish. I think that's just so ironic, as Alanis Morrisette says. When we were on tour in England and I was still with Roy, we had met David and I had ended up getting together with David. He was married to Angie Bowie at the time. She supposedly allowed him to have extramarital affairs, but after she found out that David was seeing me for the third or fourth time..... I suppose once or twice was okay, it meant nothing to David. Three or four times, it was getting serious. So she really flipped out, and it became difficult to see David after that, especially because he lived in England and I was in the States. But we carried on with a relationship for maybe a little bit more than a year. The song was sort of tongue in cheek. I mean, I think David is a wonderful person too.

Check out the live video for the Ace of Cups song Simplicity from the TV show Live at Frisco. All female, all original San Francisco acid rock and they rock out in 1968. Never had a major label, they opened for Hendrix and he was impressed. Love Fanny too!

Me too still have it but it’s well worn I think it had Alice Coopers slick black limo on it as well as a special unfinished sweet promo
Unfinished sweet is a fantastic song that builds up to then final tooth extraction truly original concept by Alice those days

They didn't get famous enough at that time to let it get to their heads. But now that they've re-formed, they merit all good fortune to come their way.

I heard them the first time by chance while living in Boulder Colorado mid to late 1970-can't recall whether it was at a friend's place or on the radio. Went to see them in Denver pretty sure it was Spring 1971 just before the "Charity Ball" album hit which I went out and bought the day it was released. They opened for The James Gang, who split up about six months later. The venue was maybe 9-10K and we were in the fourth row (or fifth since I have said that in other comments-at that proximity, you feel the music as much as hear it) dead in front of the stage-just enough elevation to be almost level with the stage. We-some friends of mine from Kent, Ohio wanted to see Joe again-were pretty messed up (joints). I was there to see this upstart "all girl" band with Joe being a bonus since I had been watching him since he was a "Measle" playing at The Fifth Quarter-among other venues-in Kent. I was-still am-a big fan of Jim Fox's drumming also having seen him with "The Outsiders" (Sonny Geraci). Long story short: The James Gang should have been opening for Fanny that night. These ladies burned the place down. My only regret is that I didn't see them again.

I always thought this song was similar to "I'd Love to Change the World" by Ten Years After which came out shortly after this. Fanny has a similar theme here, but harsher and less certain.
I also agree that the live Beat Club version is better. I think that video has been taken down. Never fear, there's a Beat Club channel now on YT, and I think it will be back up there in better quality very soon. Best part is that June, Jean, Nickey, and Alice might still get a buck or two if Beat Club puts it back up.
