@@CogniVision i never really understood when big dudes said shit like “yeah well if i was super light i could do that too”. Like dude, you have more muscle than me. Shouldnt that make it easier for you to do it? More of your body is muscle so its capable of manipulating more weight

I’m push-ups, you use around 70% of your bw. The 50kg guy is pushing up just 35kg, whereas the 100kg has to do 70kg. This is why you often see really skinny people able to deadhang for 5 minutes straight or do pullups easily.
I recommend getting into rock climbing if you wanna gain strength but don't care about looking big; it pushes your limits on nearly every muscle group on the body while still being fun, you'll look more on the lean side rather than skinny if you do it regularly enough. Check out Magnus Mitdbøe, he has some good workouts on it.

Unless I start eating like three people worth of food or stop being physically active, I don't think I'll gain weight. Even cheap calories get expensive when there are a lot of them.
I use to be super skinny but strong when I was younger and could not gain weight no matter how much I ate. You need a ton of food everyday and you need to be less active to gain weight but I wouldn't worry too much when you younger just keep training while eating healthy with enough protein and when you hot your late 20's you will be able to put weight on. @@omarvalle6549 yeah, I can barely maintain weight eating like double what most people eat and being very physically active. I'll eat like two whole medium pizzas for dinner and not even notice it sometimes.
Omg I love that you said,”I don’t mind how I look, I train for ability” because when it all boils down, functionality is what will carry longer and farther as far as efficiency goes.
That confidence is key. It doesn’t matter how you get fit or what you enjoy doing to get there, as long as, you’re happy with the results and your future potential doing it.
Seriously, I ended up feeling great when I started focusing on being physically capable instead of being physically strong. I've been weight lifting my whole life. But introducing lots of pull ups, pushups, and running changed my physique. I look way better and I didn't lose much strength in the process.
@@ld1065 do you not know what 0capable means in this context, if you bench press sure you will be able to produce more power and force from your muscles affected by bench pressing, but if you do pushups on a daily basis on a moderate to high scale, you will end up doing more pushup than a weight lifter with similar or even a huge physique than you, I bet strongmen like Eddie Hall cannot do a clean 50 pushup with proper form under a minute l, but they can lift monstrous weights, you see where this is going?
There's nothing more "functional" to being overly flexible than being able to lift heavy weights. The chances that you'll need to put your toes behind your head and lift 600lbs from the floor in your every day life are pretty much the same. It's just a matter of what you enjoy more to do as an activity.
I was doing one handed pushups and one leg squats like this guy before i started lifting... Hes strong compared to the average joe, his mobility is better than mine, and he has movement specific skill that i dont (but i also dont care about) but i, even as a very part time lifter between work school and family, would bet a decent amount of money i can put up bigger numbers than him on 1 rep max lifts. One day i tried to do weighted one leg squats bcs i couldnt make it to the gym and i couldnt find anything conveniently holdable heavy enough to stress my legs, body weight exercises can get great results to a limit on upperbody, but for legs you just cant achieve enough stress without extra weight
@@noncog1 i get what you mean, hes doing super specific muscle groups, better for some practical use. On the other hand you can lift something super heavy for a moment to help somone in some situations. I need dis cuz im training mma and really need to work my lats and triceps
@@noncog1 a lot of this is about balance and technique. It just requires practice. I also think it's much easier for little guys to lift their own body weight, your strength doesn't usually grow in proportion to your body weight. I also am not going to the gym that much but do lift weights and have for years and I'm confident I could easily out deadlift him, out bench him and out squat him with weights any day of the week, and I can't do half of the stuff he's doing.
This is perfectly worded and explains the situation I’m in with BJJ. Im a bigger guy with some size but I roll again people who are much smaller than me with much more strength.
It’s probably because they’re far more technical then you due to training longer then you have and they’re going all out where you’re probably holding back. A smaller guy has to go all out to survive a bigger guy in a roll even if they’re more skilled. Usually bigger guys take it easier because if they don’t they’ll easily hurt their smaller training partners and will get scolded by the coach.
😂😂😂😂 it’s cuz u really can’t use ur size (strength) in jujitsu gyms you’re there to learn the technicals not over power smaller ppl. But yes size does matter in bjj
doesnt work like that. its about genetics and pushing past the regular limits but it takes decades. and everyones body is different you cant make a program for this. you need to push your whole body in different ways. it cant be too much repetetive. this entails walking fast everywhere and shit. best if you do whole body reppetetive actions in shitty weather, sand and then resist movement optimization and force ur body to move faster then it wants to push to the limits every day. but again its a balance between sleep and food. its a fucking nightmare. build 10kg of mass in 2 years and live happy its not worth it. its more of an experiment nohing more. its like overclocking CPU yes you get more performance out of the same product but it has life expectency issues and also you wont get a higher tier performance just higher one in ur class. Weigt classes are determined by 5lb or 5kg so yeaaahhhhhh.
This is what I need. I've been too weak my whole life and I just know my back problems would disappear if I had more core strength. I'm trying to work on it but it's a hard habit to build.
Totally agree. I used to build muscle/strength very easily without even trying but after 3 kids in under four years…. Yeah, that’s all gone. But I also have crazy back and neck pain, and I want to be healthy and active so I can enjoy being outside and playing with the kids, plus we’re trying to lean more into the homesteading lifestyle and in order to do that I need to be waaay more physically intact than I currently am. I lost most of the baby weight, but the strength is totally gone and I notice it every day.
I want to learn calisthenics. And Im poor so I couldn't afford a gym right now, but your videos are giving me hope. I hope you can do some exercise videos that we can follow along with.
The thing about calisthenics is that the biggest thing you need to start is your body. Hybrid Calisthenics has some great videos for beginners who don't know where to start.
Yeah just look through Hybrid Calisthenics stuff cause it's great if you dont have access to a gym. But yeah, maiy a floor and if you can find a way to do pullups, try it out and try to get to at least 1 pullup
I am glad you chose to talk about this. I've seen a few of your videos and as a bigger guy the thought of your build and weight I tried to poop on your hard work and commitment. That was just my brain coming up with excuses for not being able to do this which is where the real pile is. Keep up the hard work and good information. You are appreciated and respected.
There isnt even any reason you cant do that. Weighing 100kg doesnt mean you cant be flexible, mobile, fast or good on bodyweight exercises. You just have to train for them. You can lift 400kg in a deadlift and do gymnastics. They dont preclude each other. Now obviously you cant do gymnastics quite as well as someone who has the body for it since at a point your muscle mass does get in the way. But in general you can have very impressive flexibility and all that no matter what.
As an aerialist, I can say it doesn't even take that much strength to hang by your toes lol. Flexibility, yes, and core strength to get upside down, yes, but once you're in the position, it's all pain tolerance 🙃
Yeah tbh it doesn't look that difficult(which is easy for me to say, not having tried it) but I can just imagine that bar grinding into the top of my bony ass feet. Ouch.
Yeah pain tolerance for the fabric crunching your feet and bruising your hips 😂I tried aerial workouts and girls look so graceful on videos. As soon as I touched the fabric I was like oh shit🙃This will hurt my 🦶 feet. It did, a lot. It absolutely was worth the workout, made it fun. If I were able to do one at home I would, but the classes were too pricey to buy bruises lol I have other workouts for now
There's also genetics. I am scandinavian and some of us have extra dense muscle and bone fibres, my family has that gene, me included. I am very strong without really doing anything, but I also tend to "suffer" by a huge inflation of my muscles when I exercise. On the other end, I have been so skinny that I was hospitalized , but my weight wasnt alarming because my bones and what little muscke I had at the time were very heavy.

Hypertrophy isn't just about size. It's real purpose is increased potential to improve in other aspects like strength, power, and endurance. If you took two people who could both squat 300lbs but one trained in hypertophy while the other trained for strength. The Hypertrophy guy will look bigger but be just as strong. If that same guy switched to strength training, he'd surpass the the other guy because he literally has more room to improve while the strength guy is pushing against his ceiling. That's why it's important to train in cycles. Like 3 months per training style.
Bigger muscles equal more strength potential, one of the reasons you can some cool calisthenics tricks is because you are 145 lbs with a little bit of strength, that is not strong.

I’ve had that theory since I’m so small, I never wanted to be a muscleheaded woman. So thanks. Mobility and strength training with intensity is the key I was missing.
Personally I train to be the most powerful living thing within 12 miles. So I'm big, extremely strong, but I'm also kinda fat, not flexible, and don't have great cardio. Each type of training gets different results and every body gets different results. Also not every routine works for every person. I am built for monstrous strength but no matter how hard or long I've tried to train flexibility and cardio I've never made very good progress. You will make progress but what you're built for will effect how quickly it's made. But stay motivated and you'll succeed...just acknowledge that I'm stronger than try to get stronger than me so we can be gym bros lol
Oh shit same goal. I’m built for flexibility though so part of my training is just making sure my tendons are in tip top shape so my joints don’t dislocate when I work out. Godspeed on your journey to become the greatest version of yourself!
I would recommend sprints for u. It’s still a maximum effort exercise so it kinda feels like strength training but more importantly it will build up your VO2 max which will keep you alive longer similar to regular cardio.

Mad dancer energy off this chap. I'm a bigger fellow (185lbs) but I've hung around with dancers and they beat me in terms of functional strength any day of the week. Although I have gotten way better at training for ability lately. Based on a couple of recommendations from those guys/gals. It's fun incorporating different movements into routines.
Depends on what you consider “functional strength” there’s functions for all kinds of strength. It’s functional to be able to pull yourself over a wall. It’s also functional to be able to carry a 250lb person on your back out of a burning building.
Dude you are my literal motivation to push myself. The one reason why I've always been kind of on the edge of working out is because I never wanted to get big, because I like being skinny (unorthodox, I know) and only recently did I figure out that you can actually achieve strength while being skinny.
MY GOAL IS THE SAME, but I just figure out on how exactly to workout like that cuz I’m the same way, I don’t wanna get big, i wanna be small but strong, just don’t know how or what to do
“You gain strength when you train with intensity and you gain size when you train with volume” To gain size you have to train with intensity as well. You can do 30 different sets at 20% 1rpm but you’re not gonna grow. Also there is a difference between being strong and being strong in terms of body weight exercises. The later doesn’t require you to be large but the former most definitely does.
this is out of nowhere I guess but I haven't found anyone who clicked with my (ADHD) brain as much as your videos do the way you deliver your suggestions just makes me feel like yes- ok- I can do that. I like that you add in things like "if you can't quite do that try this until this gets easy and then try the harder thing" . plus a direct and clear "do 10 sets of this if you can" or "if you can't that's okay, the fact you're trying is what matters" kind of stuff like there's no judgement, just an understanding that we all get there when we get there
As I guy who has done calisthenics and martial arts all my life, I couldn’t agree more with this. In my BJJ gym we get a lot of really built guys walking in thinking they’re going to steamroll everyone, and very quickly leaving in shock. I remember my instructor used to tell me not to over build so that I might remain inconspicuous and blend in. It’s always the bigger guys that get pulled into fights.
he is not insanely strong - he is strong and coordinated... he cannot exert much force on the actual world - he can move his tiny body. He weights over 100 pounds but not by much ... probably 125 wet if he's not 5'4 like he seems to be.
this guy if he keeps it up. i think can be a top fitness influencer. if ibhad to guess i think the fitness industry is going to start to shift towards calisthenics.
you know your getting older when you see a video and your like "well yeah, duh" then realize there is a younger generation that needs these videos because they dont know yet lol
What this guy forgot to mention in this video is *relative strength* vs *absolute strength* I'm sure that when you were 100lbs your *relative strength* was insane, but at 200lbs your *absolute strength* is way above your 100lbs self. It just depends on what your goals are. I use to weigh less and focused on relative strength for half a decade, now that Im into combat and fighting bigger men I've been transitioning into increasing my absolute strength by getting bigger.
@@derrickrobinson7269 You're right. One can only get so strong (absolute strength) before their size becomes a limiting factor, and they would have to get bigger to get any stronger. But I've always wondered why relative strength decreases when one gets bigger.
@@trip_t2122 Because your muscles produce force, what we might call 'brute strength' in 2 dimensions by the crossectional area, but grow in 3. So let us say you have ratio of absolute strength to bodyweight at 1:1, if your bodyweight doubles the ratio will now be 2:3, but other factors also play into strength, like skill and movement specificity, rate of force production, muscle moment arms, psychological factors like excitedness, stretch shortening cycle, specific tension, connective tissue, voluntary activation, anthropometry, and so much more!
I agree with the content with the video However it's important to note the distinction Between Pure strength ability to move weight through space And proportional strength One arm pull ups, push ups ect....
I prefer having your abilities than looking very fit and muscular and only being able to lift weights ! People might not agree but body skills and body control are more important than aesthetics and you still look fit ! Keep inspiring people. Love ❤
I really admire you.. As an ultra paranoid former fat guy who is in the gym 7 days a week while running a job and a family, I concer with you.. functional training. A lot of gassed to the gills gym brothers neglect their cardiovascular training... Oxygen is the most important aspect of all... It is the catalyst of the whole training aspect..
While I agree that strength is a skill and should be trained as such (with a lot of practice, a.k.a. a lot of sets with low reps far from failure so you can maintain good form), it needs to be backed up with muscle. If you disagree with this, show me a competitive strongman or power lifter (the people most likely to train for raw strength) who isn’t built like a fridge. I’d recommend reading the Intermediate section of Greg Knuckols of Stronger By Science’s article on training at all levels for more info.
Also 10 sets per muscle group is good enough for muscle maintenance or slight hypertrophy at a novice level, but at intermediate to advanced levels you need more like 20-30 sets per muscle. Again, look at Greg’s article or Dr. Mike Israetel of Renaissance Periodization here on RUclips. As for why David can be so strong with smaller muscles, it could be a number of things. Lots of practice, being lighter, or having better muscle insertions that allow him to exert more torque on his joints from smaller muscles with lower forces. Probably a bit of all three.
The fact he did all that without putting his crocks in sports mode is impressive.

If you want to gain weight look up calorie surplus
I recommend getting into rock climbing if you wanna gain strength but don't care about looking big; it pushes your limits on nearly every muscle group on the body while still being fun, you'll look more on the lean side rather than skinny if you do it regularly enough. Check out Magnus Mitdbøe, he has some good workouts on it.
@@coldz2526 I'm 6'1 ish, I weight 145 lb, and I eat about three to four thousand calories a day depending on what I'm doing. I've actually lost weight over the summer, I ran 2500 calories a day for a two week hike and came back five pounds lighter.
Now at 34 I can gain and lose weight at will.

calistenics and weight lifting is the golden mix. It is kinda hard to maintain but if ur nutrition is good u alright
How do pushups make you more capable than bench pressing?
@@ld1065 do you not know what 0capable means in this context, if you bench press sure you will be able to produce more power and force from your muscles affected by bench pressing, but if you do pushups on a daily basis on a moderate to high scale, you will end up doing more pushup than a weight lifter with similar or even a huge physique than you, I bet strongmen like Eddie Hall cannot do a clean 50 pushup with proper form under a minute l, but they can lift monstrous weights, you see where this is going?

There's nothing more "functional" to being overly flexible than being able to lift heavy weights. It's just a matter of what you enjoy more to do as an activity.
Tried to do a 1 hand push up and failed. This man is strong af. I need to do more calisthenics lol
If you can do 20 pushups you can do a 1 hand push up it's not even that hard it's all in the technique

Post a workout routine i wanna be deceptively strong
doesnt work like that. its about genetics and pushing past the regular limits but it takes decades. and everyones body is different you cant make a program for this. you need to push your whole body in different ways. it cant be too much repetetive. this entails walking fast everywhere and shit. best if you do whole body reppetetive actions in shitty weather, sand and then resist movement optimization and force ur body to move faster then it wants to push to the limits every day. but again its a balance between sleep and food. its a fucking nightmare. build 10kg of mass in 2 years and live happy its not worth it. its more of an experiment nohing more. its like overclocking CPU yes you get more performance out of the same product but it has life expectency issues and also you wont get a higher tier performance just higher one in ur class. Weigt classes are determined by 5lb or 5kg so yeaaahhhhhh.
Yeah it's cool to be low-key strong, brings on a humble confidence

Love your comment
