      @mtrdjn 3 года назад +6

      @@class8866 Really interesting note. Mussolini was the Prime Minister of Italy from 1922 until the end of World War II. Should everything that was built in that period be demolished or since it was built then, by definition, it is not beautiful? Or is it just necessary to emphasize that the station was built in the time of Mussolini, which, in your opinion, might diminish the aesthetic approach or something similar?

      @mtrdjn 3 года назад +2

      @@class8866 This affirmation is certainly more understandable.
      However, I still don't understand what it means that the station was built in Mussolini's time and what is the special style of that time related to Mussolini, as if Mussolini was one of the characteristics or features of an architectural or other artistic direction from the 1930s. 20th century. I belong to those who experience fascism in Italy in general and experience fascism as an ideology with great indignation, so it was impossible to omit my answer to your first comment.
      It would be too long to analyze the styles present in the station project, but how much Mussolini's time and / or any particular style there was I will try to present with a short story.
      Milan Central Station was inaugurated in 1931 on a project by the architect Ulisse Stacchini to replace the previous central station of 1864 which stood in the current Piazza della Repubblica and which had become insufficient to absorb the increase in railway traffic.
      The Ministry of Public Works appointed in 1898 a government reform commission with the mandate to study the measures necessary for the definitive arrangement of the Milan railway service to meet the traffic requirements that could be assumed in the following twenty years.
      On April 29, 1906, on the occasion of the inauguration of the Simplon International Exposition, the first stone of the new station was solemnly laid about 600 meters north of the old one, in the area of the former Trotter, that is the primordial sports field used for AC Milan's home games. At the same time, the first architectural competition was launched, which remained unsuccessful. In 1912 a new competition was launched, which was however based on a new functional scheme inspired by the stations of Leipzig and Stuttgart. The competition was won by the architect Ulisse Stacchini, but the preliminary works were soon interrupted due to the outbreak of the First World War and were resumed only after the end of the war or in the year 1925.
      The architect Stacchini would have reworked his project several times, up to the final version of 1925.

      The funny thing about this video though, is the Bombardier cars are not certified for more than 100mph, and in fact, at least as of spring 2020 when I stopped riding MARC regularly, it was very unusual for them to couple an HHP-8 onto them. They usually only build consists of all MARC III cars - the Kawasakis - for the HHP-8s. The Kawasakis are the most comfortable commuter rail cars I've ridden in my travels which include places like London, Melbourne & Sydney, so it's a shame he didn't document them. Although TBH the seat padding is getting a bit worn recently and MARC ought to refurbish the interiors. They ride incredibly well on the rough track of the NEC - better than Amfleets OR Acela IMHO.

      It's actually a bit more secure than you'd think. Most cab cars over here are designed to work as regular cars, so they need the gangway at both ends, kinda like the Single-Level car he rode with the HHP-8. There's usually a notice when a Cab Car is actually serving its function, and from there the end vestibule is sealed off and only the High-Level doors on that side of the car are usable

    Hopefully next time you can get up to Baltimore Penn Station! Not as big or grand as Union Station, but it's about to undergo a several year renovation and expansion. MARC uses primarily Chargers and MP36PH-3C because their other two lines aren't electrified, but it's a waste they don't use electric locomotives or EMUs on the Penn line between DC->Baltimore->Perryville, MD. Every once in a while they'll use an Amtrak ACS-64.

    • @UncommonElevators
      @UncommonElevators 3 года назад

      The PRR used to use MP54s when they ran this service. Amtrak also ran a Philly-Washington trip using Arrows leased from NJ Transit in the 1980s. The equipment they use now is less efficient.

      There was a time that MARC used electric locomotives on the “Penn Line”. They had a fleet of AEM7s, and at least one or two oh the HPP-8s. Might have been an issue about simplifying maintenance?

    • @PGHammer21A
      @PGHammer21A 3 года назад +1

      @@dougalexander5871 And when was the last time you took MARC's Penn Line? The Penn Line is the ONLY line that MARC uses that is electrified (because it overlays the NEC). Their other two lines (Camden and Brunswick) have no caternaries - and thus use diesel locomotive power. (Further, AMTRAK - not MARC itself - actually operates (and mostly owns) the locomotives themselves - in addition, AMTRAK/MARC loaned locomotives and passenger cars to SEPTA due to the latter commuter rail service having to take ALL their Silverliners offline for wheel replacement. (There is video here on RUclips covering this on SEPTA's Media/Elwyn line.) MARC does lease (via AMTRAK) ACS Chargers; some of these were loaned to SEPTA; they are now back in Penn Line service.

I understand that the MARC electric locos, both their AEM-7s and HHP-8s are maintained by Amtrak. A couple of comments. MARC numbers it's electric locomotives in the #4900-series in honor of the late Pennsylvania Railroad's classic GG1 electric locomotives, which were numbered from #4800 - 4939. The single-level Sumitomo cars were the first new cars MARC was able to buy, they had been using either equipment inherited from B&O/PRR/PC or leased from Canada's GO Transit. They used former B&O Budd RDC cars until 1992! Then they replaced them with EMD E-units from Chicago's METRA system for a few years. They've had quite a hodge-podge of equipment.

    I found your channel a few weeks ago and appreciate your honest reviews of American rail service. Yes the trains in Europe are probably superior but given the fact that rail travel in America is probably a third choice after autos and air, trains can be a relaxing and efficient form of transportation, considering the vast distances between some American cities, once you leave the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak has just announced proposed expanded rail service in the American Southeast which will provide alternatives to air and auto travel for millions of people. Hopefully if this plan comes to fruition, you'll have many more routes to review! - Brian

    I thoroughly enjoyed this review. Also I am a huge fan of the HHP-8 loco, and fortunately travelled many times behind Amtrak examples between Baltimore and New York. Great shame they proved unreliable, but when in good order they had plenty of urge ! Let's hope the 6 MARC ones are soon back in service, but in the summer time, several Amtrak Siemens electrics could be seen on MARC trains between Baltimore and D.C !

    The HHP-8s were acquired around the same time as the Acelas. At that time, Amtrak went on an Acela-themed rebranding that confused everyone and was quickly abandoned.
    Part of this rebranding was having the HHP-8s look like Acela power cars. Amtrak workers derided them by calling them "Bananas."

As of today the HHP8 are normally used on express trains and semi expresses. I still wish some would run during th day. They’re the only locos that give off speed higher then 110mph. Did a MARC local video too with an HHP8 both mu trains were flying

    HHP-8 is derived from both SNCF BB36000 & BB26000 since those SNCF locomotives use the same traction and propulsion units as the HHP-8. The northern Terminus of the Penn line are Perryville and Baltimore Penn Station. Regarding the Bombardier Multilevel coaches they have been in used in the northeastern United States since 2006 when NJ Transit got MLV I later followed by MLV II and now MLV III. American trains use a Transtech Pantograph

    When I saw the thumbnail, I thought that it looked like an Alstom loco. The U.S. fascination with bells on locos and trains amazes me. When the first EMD arrived in the UK, there was a bell stuck on the end. It was non-operational, thankfully.

      Bells are annoying, rules dictate their use. Just like blowing the horn. In America, you _listen_ for the train, if you hear nothing then there is no train. Trains are loud and annoying as a way to draw attention. It's how it's always been over here.

    Hey! MARC commuter here, and I can explain some of the things you saw:
    You took the Penn Line, which is along the Amtrak NEC rail line. Both the HHP-8 and the various diesels run here. The diesels run on the Brunswick and Camden lines. The equipment is swapped among all three in normal operations.
    You rode up on the MARC IV passenger car (latest) and came back on a MARC II (second gen). The latter were frequently loaned out to US East Coast states when they have trouble with passenger load, and sometimes borrowed by Amtrak for Thankgiving and Christmas "extra" service. Why? The MARC II series *fits* in the Hudson River tunnels.
    The HHP-8's were refubished to correct cooling issues that killed Amtrak's taste for it. The manufacturer, Bombardier's rail divison, just merged with the engine partner, Alstom. Bombardier/Alstrom also staffs and runs the MARC trains on the Camden and Brunswick lines (which are run on CSX track), as well as maintains the equipment... which means they got a chance to *FIX* the issues!
    (But now down again? Ugh.)
    You should try going from DC to Baltimore via the Camden Line (to Camden Yards), then take the Light Rail up to Baltimore Penn Station, and head back down on the Penn line.

    Ah, another fact: the nickname of HHP-8 is "banana". This engine was built for Amtrak to be used on Northeast Regional services as "Acela Regional", but MARC also bought some units for Penn Line commuter service. HHP-8 replaced EMD AEM-7 units on MARC rolling stock roster.
    In Early 2000, Bombardier used the HHP-8 design to project the ill-fated turbine-powered Jet Train.

    Famous HHP-8? More like infamous. When I was there in 2018 three of the six had been refitted with their GTOs replaced by IGBTs from a third party. They went from being totally pathetic to just pathetic. MARC has had opportunities to buy new electrics but it's a matter of having the money when the product is available; manufactures do not keep production lines running indefinitely.

    Now, I am not 100% certain, but north of Baltimore on the Penn line, the track stops being electrified. That is why they tend to use diesel locomotives. Its been a few years since I've been up that way. But one thing I know for sure is that the Brunswick line isn't electrified, and nether is the Camden line and I assume they want their trains to travel on any line they can. But nice to see one of these vids in my old neighborhood.
