  • This seems to be a common thing that needs to be rebuilt on most of the CJ5/7/8s. Most commonly the boot is the thing that wears out first and then the other components deteriorate due to exposure. The parts to replace can be found here: www.quadratec....
    You can get just the boot at Quadratec, Rock Auto, Morris 4X4 and various other vendors.

      Thanks for the feedback. Love the fact that the videos are helpful. We're all beginners. :)
      I would guess it's hard to get parts in italy. No?

    Nice technique reinstalling the rubber boot . I remember a FSJ ‘78 Cherokee I once had , had the ‘78-79 only rear driveshaft front trunnion universal joints that was basically the same design . It’s cross pin had to be centered within a fractional tolerance and required a press to extract and replace with the replacement kit . After the second replacement bit the dust , I had a driveshaft cut , resize and install an Eaton/spicer spline slip yoke with Cardan universal joints . Your method of installing the boot will save time , aggravation and injury . Thanks for sharing .

      Good to know. I made this video after watching a few people do some crazy things to get it on. Figured there we others out there that needed a better way to do it. :)

    Thanks Cool Guy. I followed your instructions and used a heat gun to make the boot stretch and also used a blunt plastic straight edge to pry the boot over the T end. Keep’em coming. Restoredude out!

      One can only hope. I'm doing everything I can to waterproof, and rustproof while keeping it original. Don't know if it's possible, but I'm going to try.

    I'm getting ready to do this exact task on my CJ7. Thanks for the video, although I'm sure at some point I'll wind up jabbing the screwdriver into my hand.

    My (I think original) box finally started leaking after 38 years and I'm going to upgrade to a J20 or Durango box. I pulled a manual steering shaft from a CJ at the boneyard and couldn't figure out how to get the coupler off. I didn't know there was that retaining bracket going around it. Took me all of 3 minutes to get it off.

    How did you remove that coupler from the steering box? I’m under my CJ now and I have beat the hell out of it and it hasn’t budged.

      I see on FB that you solved it. Sometimes the clamp ring meshes the gear shaft teeth together and makes it almost impossible to slide off easily. Sorry you had to go through that.

  • @joeyscleaninglady2877

    why not just go with a borgeson shaft? yea its more expensive but never have to worry about it again.

    • @coolguy_CJ7
      @coolguy_CJ7  3 года назад +1

      Probably better, but not original. The shaft double joint is still tight. Plus, it's still original. I may be doing it to a fault, but trying to keep it original. Have to replace things like gaskets and other rubber pieces, which is a P.I.T.A. sometimes.

      @@coolguy_CJ7 trust me that crown unit you put in is not original... I did see that MOPAR is now offering real OEM parts for the CJ not sure if this specific part is included but they did have some obscure parts last I checked their catalog a few months ago.
