’Untold Stories: Creating thriving post-industrial cities, An across-the-pond conversation,’ will be a half-day symposium at the University of Sheffield and online from 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM GMT and include four panels with in-person and virtual presentations exploring how to build thriving, integrated post-industrial cities.
The symposium develops from Jennifer Vanderpool's ongoing social practice art exhibitions “Untold Stories,” a series of community-specific and site-responsive exhibitions occurring in the Deindustrialized Midwest Region of the U.S.A. and the Industrial North of England. Panellists will offer multivocal perspectives and include workers, activists, artists, and scholars from Liverpool, UK; Sheffield, UK; Akron, Ohio; Youngstown, Ohio.
Each panel will be 45 minutes long, and consist of 10-minute presentations, a discussion facilitated by a moderator, and a public Q&A. The panels will offer a transdisciplinary exchange about a theme, and explore how similar ideas are addressed by practitioners in differing disciplines. What valuable insights can be gained from these conversations - for instance, strategies to reimagine architecture and the urban environment to build community; public policies to realise inclusive post-industrial cities; and approaches to cultivate and empower the global working class?
