Faith in the context of these readings is seeing God's plan ( articulated byJesus in the Gospel as well as by Ezekiel and Paul). Ezekiel's prophesy was 600 yrs before Christ at a time when Israel just suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the Babylonians. How could he speak with such optimism under such dire circumstances?.. he saw by faith not vision.. The tender shoot planted on the mountain heights of Israel was the crucified Jesus...(Jerusalem stands on hills at an altitude of nearly 2600 ft. Jesus was crucified on the hill of Gilgotha just outside of Jerusalem and entombed about a stone throw away. ) Recall the Bible tells us "the seed must die before it sprouts from the ground" (Paul in Corinthians explaining the resurection. )). The resurrected Jesus then gave rise to the majestic cedar (the church). The church (we are obliged) (as was Paul)) to proclaim the good news and draw in birds of every kind to dwell within our branches. What is the good news?? A prize that awaits us... ...victory over death, eternal life. St Paul was a student of Gamaliel, a leading rabbi at the time. He knew well the prophesy of Ezekiel. Moreover he met the living resurrected Jesus on the road to Damascus. When in the Gospel Jesus spoke of the mustard seed ( gospel reference to the kingdom of God ) the connection in Paul's mind was unmistakable. He.. like Ezekiel saw by faith. , Furthermore he saw he was duty-bound (as are we) to announce there is a new new lord and to invite everyone we can to his lordship and thus as a people initiate the beginning of our collective resurection. ..to draw all people to the majestic cedar (church) something that God wants... nothing in the universe can thwart God's will save for our own resistance. . Recall the answer to the first question of the catechism why were you created. ( to know love and serve God in this life and the next). We are commanded in the Lord's prayer to become sons of God. As CS Lewis said the best way to achieve this is by pretending we are sons of God... Yes to pretend we are Jesus Christ and behave like he would...and soon the pretense will become more a reality. If we make the hard commitment and say yes to Jesus, he will help us achieve this goal ..( some of this transformation enfolds after death). As Augustine said about the Eucharist... see what you believe in and become what you receive. If you re-read last Sunday's readings perhaps this will make sense. Ezekiel 17:22; 2 Corinthians 5:7 Mark 4:30-34
