It’s so funny that Nebraska wanted to change its colors to be more unique and then chose red and white seemingly the most common color arrangement in the country for major colleges
I saw your page of Man Killing Mastodon designs. I didn't know where to vote so I'm putting my vote here. I really liked the one with the mascot., so that's my #1. #2 would be the "logo" one. I thought they were all great though. I wish we had an animal mascot instead of what we have now! Thanks for your great content!
Well done Sir. Surprised more people didn’t know the “Man Killing Mastodons “ since there’s a statue on campus. There was also a Local band that adopted the name around 8-12 years ago. Edit: I’m from western Nebraska originally. Chappell in da house
I often tell folks if you see a tree in Nebraska, it's by a river a lake or somebody lives there and for a lot off years that was pretty much true. Corn husking used to be a competitive event at fairs and such.
Mr Johnson. Outstanding video on the history of our beloved Cornhuskers nicknames. Absolutely mastodons is more appealing than mammoths. I an still a bit more favorable to The Rattlesnake Boys. A painful strike that disables if not kills!
I think there was a couple of missed opportunities as far as nicknames sounding cool. You mentioned "Bug eaters as being a bird that ate bugs, called a Night Hawk. To 21st Century ears Night Hawk has a cool ring to it. It may have been passed over because I have heard of night hawks being another name for nightmares, but you can put a spin on that as well ;) Man Killing Mastodons will do just fine ;)
I'd appreciate a deep dive into our Heisman winner history - there is some controversy there among other things and a stat analysis on why Eddie George beat out Frazier in '95. Thanks Jon; always enjoy your content.
For this offseason my plan is to stay around the 1890-1928 range so I don't have to deal with copyright as much and I can figure out how I'm going to work with historical societies, etc. Plus everyone's dead and I won't have to argue with them. Ha!
‘Hoosiers,’ if I remember correctly, was a term applied to the former indentured servants who moved northward, seeking new land in the Northwest Territory, after completing their 7- or 10-year service in the southern states. The term initially comes from the English settlers in the southern states who (mostly) came from southwestern England. It was a disparaging term for (I believe) the lowland Scots & Scots-Irish.
I grew up in Indiana, and never heard that before. The story that I remember best is that it came from the dialect the pioneers had. When someone knocked on their door the Hoosier would call out "who's aire?"
I’m a American with Latvian heritage. With the history I was taught when I was young, I believe the laws in Latvia are justifiable. If the Russians in Latvia love Russia so much, then just move.
"Man Killing Mastodons" sounds the most bad ass. I enjoyed watching this history lesson. Good job, Jon!
thank you!
Crazy to give up Bugeaters. That's the best nickname ever.

I love this history stuff, good work. Maybe not hiss but everyone would have some hand held rattler to make noise instead of using keys.
Great history video...
Go Big Red!!!

Morrill Lions Rule!
@@cavecookie1 haha! Love it!
Jon, great video. Maybe they should have replaced Herbie with a Man-killing Mastadon with red tusks? See you and Todd tonight.
Outstanding research Jon! Really well done! I like Man-killing Mastadons better.
Thanks for the lesson. GBR
You are welcome!
A proud heritage swamped into obscurity in the so-called Big 10. I'm no bugeater, but I remember with fondness those dominating teams of the 70's.
This is outstanding John. You've got a knack for this history stuff.
thank you!

Great video, John! Man Killing Mastadons is epic and way better than Mammoths. I foresee a new Corn Nation t-shirt in the future.
You are correct! I am working on designs now.
Mastodons for sure! Let's get it on a scarlet and cream shirt! Great video. "There’s no hope. Fuck everything. Go Big Red."

Please can you do a video explaining all of our older mascots. I would love to know the history behind them and why some went away.
This is a good idea. I'll see what I can do.
I would buy a shirt from your store if it said “man killing mastodons”!
I do need to get on that hahahahah
I vote for Man-killing Mastadons. The campus needs a mastadon statue named "Ndamukong".
IDK if they have the rights to that name, they'd probably get Suh'd.

I feel that we need a CN Man Eating Mastodons shirt. Way better than my Frost Warning one.
I am working on that... hope to have something soon!
Well Dave Remington certainly was a " man killing mastodon"

Great video content! Not so sure I like the calm, monotone presentation. 😅😊
I need to work on the monotone part, that's for sure.
@@CornNation maybe watch some old SF games. Your tree side talks were always nice.
The great Florida A&M University is nicknamed "Rattlers".
Mastadons
That is better than cornhusker, man killing mastodon. The sideline mascot would be problematic.

Idiots Out Wondering Around were smart enough to stop before they got to Nebraska.
People who were smart enough to go to Nebraska know how to spell
