Hi guys! Growing up New Zealand we had very few buildings that were even 150 years old (none of them castles.) When I moved to the UK in 2004 I looked forward to seeing castles. The first one I visited in person was Conwy Castle in North Wales. The first of many! I love castles.
Brasil, not Portugal, right? When I visit a castle in Germany I always look for fingerprints in the mortar between the foundation stones and I always find some. Incredible to find a fingerprint of a worker, who made what you look at 1000 years ago.
In Swedish, there are several different words for these kinds of constructions, and I'm pretty sure it's similar in German. What was shown, I'd call "palats" or "slott" (Pallace in English) which were domestic buildings for royalty and nobles. Then there's "borg" which is more of a military construction. And "skans" which is a relatively small version of a borg. "Hus" (House) was also used for a smaller defensive building without walls surrounding it or a moat. And then there's "herrgård" which is a less expensive/smaller version of a Pallace.
You are right, the german words are "Palast" or "Schloss" (palace) and "Burg" (castle) or "Festung" (fortification). Most "castles" where fortifications in the first place, but got updated to palaces later on ... noticable how many pure Walls are at there or how many windows are down to the basement, changing the styles over time and many much more. Some of these "castles"... like Neuschwanstein and the Löwenburg, are build not in the mediveals as fortress (castle), but later in the 18/19th centuries as palaces lookalike as mediveal castle.
^this :D i was about to recommed the same thing ,if they alrady love this vid than they will absolutly love the ( this is Germany vid ) also with tons of german Castles etc. :D
Germany, England, France and the states around these countries is the area of castles and knights, there are really beautiful places and castles there even outside of Germany. greetings from Germany
I think the Text to Nr. 12 Löwenburg (Lionscastle) is not really correct. The Castle was build from 1793 to 1801 to look like a medieval ruin, not as a fortress. Even the destroyed towers were built as ruins for the nicer look. Fun Fact: Althoug the electoral prince, who ruled over Kassel at this time, was protestant, the chapel of the Castle is built in catholic tradition. Because it should look like a real medieval castle and the reformation took place after the middle ages.
funny, a saw a castle in the thumbnail, where i been born close by! its the 2nd they show...Glücksburg! this area belonged to Denmark to the moment we Germans decided that we have better use for it!... in 1864!
The saying about lightning is not unique to brazil, it is also known in Europe... but the saying is about a single lightning storm, not about that lightning never strikes the same place again. Once lightning hit a place during a single lightning storm, its electrical potential is spent and lightning is no longer attracted to it. So if it *can* hit another place, it will do so. But that assumes, that it can hit somewhere else, which is not always the case...
Well, I'm living 30km away from the Wartburg Castle but I'm not sure if it really belongs to the most beautiful castles. However, its historical significance is unmatched since it hosted Martin Luther while he was performing the first translation of the Bible into German ("Lutherbibel"). With the help of the movable type printing press, invented by Gutenberg some decades before, the Lutherbibel disseminated and influenced the entire modern German language. It enabled ordinary people to read the word of God and contributed to the split between Catholic and Protestant Churches. P.S.: Regarding your question how they build castles on top of mountains. They were constantly improving their engineering skills with such projects. P.P.S: Since I've seen all these castles my personal favorite is Burg Eltz but it is disappointing to see Neuschwanstein in this list. This is just a blink blink castle with not much behind.
In western Germany, almost all castles were destroyed by French troops during the War of the Palatinate Succession. Here you see more ruin after ruin after ruin.
