    This would be great for making grilled cheese sandwiches. I think this would be very useful for a food truck. It doesn’t take up too much room, but it works fast.

    i'd spread it from top to bottom, not side to side like you did. that way it'll match the width of the bread better and not be wider than the bread and overflow on the side like it was doing

    90% of the "speed" here is caused by the fact that you're using creamed butter. With creamed butter, two people (one with a spoon or pastry bag and one with a knife or spatula) can butter about 1 slice (of any common size / shape) of bread per second without making such a mess on the edges.
    This is a clear example of a gadget that sits half way between quality and speed, and doesn't quite deliver on either of them. Either make it fully automated (i.e., a machine that you just load standard-sized bread loaves into, and spits out buttered pairs of slices), or use tools that can cope with different-sized (and -shaped) slices without making such a mess. I definitely would not eat at a sandwich stall that had those huge blobs of butter hanging from the sides. And cleaning them up 1 by 1 would take longer than using a knife in the first place.

      It's spreadable butter - real butter with a touch of vegetable oil so it spreads straight from the fridge. I use it all the time and it tastes lovely - if it didn't, I wouldn't buy it because margarine and other non-butter spreads taste foul.

    Holy Hannah that's amazing. I don't even eat sandwiches much but I want one. I have grilled cheese more.
    A potential improvement for a future version would be to add a blocker for the outlet so you could make it smaller for other things, like oatcakes, baguettes / hotdog rolls, bagels, etc.
    Need to get the right design down for it though, one that won't get jammed up with your spreads and won't be awkward and fiddly.
    Or if they never wanted to make it dynamic width, since most stuff is either about 2-3 inches wide or 5-6, just add a half-width blocker that can go on either side for lefty or righty and you're done. Yeah that'd work.
    Some people did point out it has an issue with flow control (too much spread on top)
    It could potentially be helped with a height adjuster that slides alongside the item you are coating. If we were adding the half-width blocker, you could make it in such a way that the height adjuster could go on one side, the opposite if you are using said blocker.
    Probably getting over-engineered at this point. lol
    Probably just easier to either apply less thumb pressure or hold the hopper closer to the breaded good in question to prevent the flow coming out as much. The latter would actually also help get the spread in to the little grooves of some airier breads, which is a bonus.
    It's also a personal thing. Some people like thick spreads, some like thin. I'm the former, like a nice thick coat of jam or butter.

    Having worked in aproffesional kitchen making hundreds of sandwiches at a time, this thing would double my prep time, my method is to whip the spread, butter or margarine etc, then using a 4 inch flat pallet knife, spread out slices and go for it. Average sandwich loaf in A ustralia is 26 slices in under 30 seconds.

      Margaret Gardner Do large families usually have money to waste then? This thing is expensive AND it wastes butter (it put way too much on the bread, and huge amounts dropped off the sides).

    • @Margar02
      @Margar02 6 лет назад +2

      Moomin Troll I didn't think it was too much butter for a grilled sandwich, but maybe I like butter a little too much 😇 however, this is a VERY British product. Y'all's bread is very big and almost perfectly rectangular, compared to the US with the rounded/split top shape.

    • @Xenobat
      @Xenobat 6 лет назад

      Margaret Gardner Depends on which bread you get, different brands have different shapes. We get a loaf that's rectangular (so that part's true) but with a rounded crust, I'm not too keen on the squared shape loaves because the slices are really small. I like a fair bit of butter on my bread, but that thing squirts way too much, it even spills over the side.

    • @juliereis146
      @juliereis146 6 лет назад +3

      Moomin Troll there seemed to be a bit of a learning curve, on how much pressure to apply. And I would imagine that if you used real butter that wasn’t quite as soft as what Barry was working with there might be better results. As far as large families go and this being good for grilled sandwiches. I am 1 of 34 first grandchildren and 40 some odd great grandchildren (I can’t keep track of that number as it keeps growing) plus everyone’s significant others and my aunts, there are 7 plus my mom, and their significant others...... So when we get together for a weekend of camping YES!!! this would be awesome!!! Just my thought.....

    I'm sure it's great, but when I saunter into my kitchen thinking about making a cheese, onion, and Marmite sandwich, the first thought that crosses my mind isn't 'Can I spread butter five times faster on that tiger bread?' It's usually on the lines of: 'Why are there toy cars in the breadbin?' If you're making sarnies for a Christening, Wedding, or Funeral (Hatched, Matched, and Dispatched), then it sounds just the perfect gizmo.

    The difference between this, and the other butter gadgets, is that you used VERY SOFT butter to begin with. The others used cold and firm butter. If its already soft, its easy to spread anyway. However, it does genuinely look like it would be great for a sandwich shop, or a catering business or something.

    I'm thinking it'd be great for large families. Lots of buttered bread for toast or for grilled cheese sandwiches.

    You should make Homer a part of the kitchen since he matches in color. Attach him to the door with adhesive. then you wouldn't have him in the way and you wouldn't have to store it away.
    You may get to use the spreader on your pizza venture.

    So this gadget doesn't work on butter straight from the fridge? Hmmm, not quite what I need. Thanks for the video.

    I can see how this would be useful in schools and such but also some people do leave their "butter" on the counter at room temp all the time, so i mean if just a random family gets one itd be good for in the morning to just have it on the counter.

    So basically you paid a bunch of money to wait for butter to be spreadable then mix it around and put it in this gadget. When you can just wait for it to be soft and use a knife . ....

      Yep, and get a better spread with the knife as well. I was surprised by how many spots this thing missed. Very inconsistent.
      And it did that poorly with fake butter. I would imagine it doesn't work at all with real butter.

      > if you ran the business
      I wouldn't eat at a business that had globs of creamed butter hanging off the sides of the bread. And cleaning them up one by one would take longer than doing them properly in the first place, with (real) butter and a warm spatula.
