His work after 2000 gave him much fame that people forget his works before this periods. Raakh, JJWS, Akele Hum Akele Tum, Hum hai rahi pyar ke, Andaz apna Apna, ghulam, sarfarosh. 1947 earth. All these movies are far superior than what we have today. Also he focused on 1 movie a year and even if they were great, they didn't get much commercial success.
Hum hair rahi pyae ke, ghulam, sarfarosh - from above are super hits. Others being Ishq, Dil hai ke manta nahi and Rangeela, Raja Hindustani, Dil being blockbusters - you can't expect these movies to do bigger than big banner commercial blockbuster films of yash raj, dharma and rajshri. It is great that he competed with them and yet have many hits as above along with many good films like jjws, ahak, etc.
