This song is the ultimate I'm back in time as a teenager, riding in a car with my friends because we're bored and I have my arm out of the window while it's raining to feel the drops hit my hand. That's what it takes me back to every time.
Don't forget Chino Moreno is singing in the song as well. He is the first singer. Its a duet
I feel like most people either miss this or ignore him, which bugs the shit out of me
@@wolfhawk1999 I just think it's lazy on the reactor not to do his homework. Thinking that MJK does all the vocals because hes is so great is cool and all but not learning about Deftones and that Chino is a great singer as well and he is also on this track shows him being biased and lazy.

I don’t think it’s a matter of not doing his homework, Maynard has the dominant part in this song, no mistaken that. Maynard was even slated to be executive producer on this album since the group was having issues at this point in time. Maynard just gave them as kindly shove & reminded them of who they were. No harm, no foul, just great music
Chino's voice is iconic. Rarely has any effects on it. Just a master class of softly spoken but highly intense with tension.
Been a Deftones fan since the beginning. You definitely need to listen to them.
Maynard and Chino sound a lot alike in this, but Chino has more of the higher nasally whisper/whine at the very beginning and Maynard has the deeper clearer voice following up in this duet. Kind of difficult to tell the difference at first if you aren’t familiar with the differences in their voices. And if you aren’t aware it’s a duet at all it’s probably almost impossible to tell. Glad you reacted to this song. More people need to hear this masterpiece🤘🏼🔥
Easiest solution is to go to Genius and read the lyrics. Maynard's parts are written like _this_ and Chino's part have normal text.

I remember an album review that hit on exactly the point you made about them being at times hard to tell apart.
Abe is an incredible drummer. Chino and Maynard together is just amazing.
Every time I hear this song , instant eargasm. Chino and Maynard voices are made for this collab.
I'm not saying Maynard is faultless, but his audible "fatigue" may be intentional to get the emotion across. This is the studio version and obviously made the final cut so it may be purposeful.
I also appreciate the connection with us all being passengers along for the ride of the song. FYI if you go through the lyrics real quick it's about having sex in a car.
Most of what Maynard does is intentional. He's a very thoughtful and detail oriented person from all the interviews I've seen of his.
I also vote that Maynard was intending to sound what I'd call "exasperated" or worn out because it goes with the story/subject. He does it a bit more in some APC or Puscifer songs that I can't think of specifically right now, for similar reasons (tension). Actually with Tool in "The Patient" he does it, similar yearning tone as in this, maybe a little less "sultry".

I agree, one of the lines in that section is "Roll these misty windows down to catch my breath again." I would imagine the breathiness or fatigue is intentional.

Oh, yeah, this song is a whole trip. When he sings 'drive faster' I get a physical feeling of being in a car and the driver hitting the gas pedal. Masterfull writing and performances. Maybe check out Change (in the house of flies), Around the fur or Shut up and drive by Deftones if you want to dive into their stuff.

If you haven't seen it, there's a version of this song cut to scenes from the most excellent film "Crash". No, not that one. This one has James Spader and like Roger Ebert said, "Imagine if they made a movie about YOUR fetish..." Yeah, it's a good one. That and "Secretary" make a great double feature. See them with someone you love!
I still listen to "Prince" of the Deftones everyday. You will also like that one. Chino is an amazing singer!

So for me your best reaction yet, I like that you started off looking tired and something felt real. Yes, this was a journey , the prefix of the song being a sexual encounter in a car and nice you expressed a feeling of Maynard straining to kept up the intensity but that's how good Maynard is, in the song he was straining to keep up the intensity in 'this cruel night air and wanted to roll down the windows. And to answer "when is a song over", well, hopefully when both parties are satisfied ;)
Check out some more Deftones. Chino is a really good singer. U might enjoy it. Plus check out Primus. A totally different style of singing than anything uve ever done

Deftones have an awesome vibe of intense laziness that adds tension and Chino is influenced by Maynard I think more APC than Tool. I think you've reacted to The Grudge by Tool so you know Maynard can hold a note. His dropping of intensity at that point is I believe on purpose to add to the dissonance and tension of this song.
Things aging well is such an interesting topic. Watching Micheal Jackson moonwalking now feels very much "of that period" whereas Prince's performances still seem purely organic and proper for any time period. It's really unpredictable, too. Hard to predict what will happen with it....

Always love deftones songs that sound dark and are about some kinda depraved sex and drugs. I remember when they okayed digital bath on a late night show live back in the day and i was like holy shit no one resd the lyrics to the song lmao it was kiterally about drowning a woman in the bathtub and then taking her out drying her off and taking her to the bedroom 😬
