    A much better location to install the filter is on the inlet side of the heater core. It gets constant flow from the engine but you will need an actual coolant filter like the ones they run on commercial trucks.

    • @ThisIsToolman
      @ThisIsToolman Год назад +8

      It would be necessary to accommodate the 5/8 inch hose leading to the heater core. That overcome I still wonder about the pressure. The cooling system will typically see 15 psi. The old mechanical fuel pumps typically produced about 4 psi and I think the filter shown might not be intended for pressures as high as 15 psi plus. One could relatively easily pre-test the filter with an air hose by regulating the pressure down to perhaps 20 psi. I like the idea and might give it a try myself but only after proving my filter selection will not leave me on the side of the road.

    • @averyalexander2303
      @averyalexander2303 Год назад +1

      Actually I'd prefer putting the filter where he has it. Many cars have a heater control valve, which blocks the coolant flow through the heater core when the heat isn't on. I could also see a filter blocking the coolant flow too much if installed in the heater hoses because of the large volume of coolant that needs to circulate. For a coolant filter, a very high flow rate is unnecessary and not beneficial. Slow and steady flow will do the trick.

    • @averyalexander2303
      @averyalexander2303 Год назад +1

      @@ThisIsToolman I'd consider getting an actual coolant filter if you want to try this. Risking a cheap plastic filter that wasn't designed for the application blowing out and stranding you while quite possibly causing serious damage in an attempt to prevent a problem that likely would never exist is ridiculous IMO. And for a pressure test as you described to be valid, you would need to fill the filter with boiling water before pressurizing it because the plastic will probably become significantly softer when it gets hot. That test still wouldn't be totally valid long term though since heat will degrade plastic over time.

  • @erzincanli

    It's very interesting that I see this by thinking about it recently. I thought of a more solid filter because of the pressure. It is strange why a filter is not installed in a system that creates sediment and rust when there are oil and fuel filters except brake fluid. I'm looking forward to the test result

    • @erzincanli

      @@KC1FUNLIFE As I know if you using straight water into the system then yes you have to use stabilizer additives. I'm living in a country with four seasons. So I'm not using straight water in coolant system. Otherwise the engine block will crack and the pipes will burst. And also straight water is not even safe to drink in the city. I'm flushing coolant system with only pure water since the beginning as well. There is not even a trace of rust in the coolant reservoir since I bought the car. So I go with pure water with any additive. I thought of using the filter for more sediment, not rust.

The previous owner just used water; unsurprisingly, the cooling system has a bit of rust. After a flush, I've been using this filter to primarily keep the reservoir from getting rust stains (Since it is a pain to clean and the exact original design is no longer available new). It filters out enough that it'll actually get fully clogged!

    if you rly wanna clean the water. Remove the thermostat completely, run the engine stationary and keep flushing the water at its peak temperature.
    (just be careful with the pressure)
    Ideally you never want any type of rust to start building up anywhere. The only way to get rid of it is to replace anything that has corrosion in it. So yeah..
    Both of my vehicles had g12 from the factory and never got anything else in the process. Both loops are like brand new from inside and every hose pump gasket you remove is clean and without any sticky resistance.
    So keep your loop clean is better than trying to clean it afterwards. Im a car mechanic and over the years working on dirty loops there's literally nothing you can do to clean every single spot in your loop to keep it corrosion free and from building up again in the future

    the idea to add a filter on the cooling system is very good, on commercial diesel industry, it is a current practice and very often, it is a requirement of the operator, If you look at WIX catalog, there is many options for coolant filtration,
    usually, thay are installed in bypass mode
    When installing this type of filtration on a clean block and cooling system, it avoids disposits on the lower part of the cooling jacket and in the crictical heat transfert portion of the head ( at exhaust ports ) and cracking
    good video but the use of a gas filter can lead to a failure due to heat and pressure as they are designed to be used on carbureted engines with a fuel pressure of 10 PSI max at a lower temperature.

    i think in theory this should work but in practice i don't think it will work, since the water pumps on most vehicles are way too small and underpowered for a job like this that requires force to properly clean it. if your getting rust like that then theres more in the system that the pump won't touch.
    personally if your that bothered about rust just use distilled water and if you only use distilled water from new you'll not have to worry about rust for your engines entire lifespan (about 100k miles) and after that threshold you'll need a rebuild anyways since tap water contains minerals chemicals higher/lower PH esc that don't harm us organics but have a negetive affect on steel/cast iron causing them to rust out quicker so using distilled you mitigate that issue entirely.

Screw on coolant filters and filter bodies are widely available in the after market. Also the filter should be down low in the system, if possible , on a heater hose to filter the most debris. Most small displacement aluminum engines do not require filtering if sca's and coolant levels are maintained and serviced accordingly, as the only steel or iron components exist in the heater core, thermostat, water pump impeller, and cylinders. There's drainage bolts on lower sides of engine block its rare to need to do a 100% flush

    I'm surprised how many people comment expecting that the plastic fuel filter would melt... the overflow tank is made from the same sort of plastic and you expect it to last for years... so how are you arriving at your conclusion that the fuel filter might melt?

    Your engine doesn't sound right, may be a belt might be too tight or there might be a bearing running rough on one of your belts?

    Seems like it filters what goes into the reservoir when the coolant expands and pressure is high, but when it cools down and the coolant moves back into the radiator, doesn't it take back some particles with it into the radiator? 🤔
