I wanted to thank you for this video..I changed the water pump on my Ram1500 2016 yesterday. I used your video to help me. I was able to complete this job with your help in about 8hours. I'm 64years old..
Nice video. Things explained well. You speak clearly which many people don't even know how . Nice job. Just found out today my pump pulley is loose. So next week for this ol 68 year old guy to get dirty and wet
And another thing… placing the bolts into the new pump as you pull them, and then transfer to the old pump before reassembly… mind blown!!! I’ve never thought about doing that. Great tip to have
I’m really glad that the video was able to help you out! Being totally obsessed with cars my whole life has lead to some good tricks and life lessons. It’s awesome to have a platform to share them on. Thanks again!
Was scratching my head after breaking my fan shroud today. So glad I watched this now will be going to the store for some zip ties. Thanks for the tip. Great video.
You saved me so much time and a huge headache. Removing the fan shroud and the fan itself would have triggered something that would have been a lot more expensive😅. Thank you for sharing. People like you are the reason I subscribe to youtube.
Not when you initially refill as the bleeder hole is at the top of the system. Add coolant to the minimum line in the overflow bottle. Then once the system won’t take any additional coolant then you start it with the plug out back but the rad cap off. Run so that the system burps out any trapped air. A few mins only. Replace rad cap. Now Run the heater too. Allow it to reach operating temp and thermostat opens. Then it may burp a bit more into overflow bottle Top off as needed to max line hot. DO NOT OPEN THE RAD CAP until fully cooled off.
Thank you big time for this video! I like that you showed a couple things right up front as to what NOT to do! And the air chisel trick was a life saver. I already had the chisel, but never would have thought about that. Since my truck is 10yrs old and all original I went ahead and replaced idler pulley, belt tensioner, thermostat housing, thermostat, fan clutch and belt all together!
Mine is over 10 years old now (2013). I'm planning to replace the belt and thermostat when I do the water pump. I'm on the fence about the tensioner. Do you have a part number for what you used? I'm seeing them range drastically in price, from $35 to over $100.
Hey bro... I watch you clip about changing the water pump on 5.7 hem. It took a bit .. but following your clip made it so I knew what to look for ... Lol you broke the shroud taken it out and I broke it putting it back in ... Lol was getting dark and got in a hurry ... But everything seems ok for now ... Save myself about 250 buck on labor lol .. thanks for helping.
I want to thank you for this video. I have a 2015 1500 and water pump started to puke yesterday. Leaving for fishing trip to Northern Wi tomorrow and had to replace today, luckily Advance screw you auto parts had everything in stock. Pump , idler, tensioner, hoses, belt and stat. And had a v6 fan setup so did it all today. Forgot that Ram decided to not put belt diagram sticker on shroud, But browzing through found clips that straightened me out thank.
Dude u are the greatest person ever. I tried the air chisel & I have never seen one come off that easy. Ty. U made this job easy u r the best. Ty. Have a great day
7 degrees is COLD! My garage has been at 22 degrees for a few weeks now and it’s just not usable at that temperature. I’m looking forward to spring!!! Thanks for watching the video, I’m thrilled that it helped you out!
I cant believe how lucky some if you guys are to get that fan clutch off so easy. It took me and my brother with a rented pulley holder tool and me standing on a 3 foot adjustable wrench to get mine off my 2013 ram. On a old s10 i had i had to cut it off with a sawzall. Use a 1000ft/lb rated impact on it. Had to buy a new clutch.
Just think, a small allen wrench does the trike. You put the short end in a hole in the pulley and wedge the long end into the fan belt tensioner bracket and it stops the pulley from being able to move . It was the easiest part of the job.
This guy is hilarious 😂 but on point while being comical, I've watched a previous video and saying to myself why the guy don't take the fan shroud out to have more space to remove the fan and work hence why I went searching n there you are making it easy, thank you.
I’m trying to help out my fellow car people, one broken fan shroud at a time. Thanks for watching the video and commenting. Tell your friends to subscribe too so I can be RUclips famous! ;)
Yep that putting the bolts in the new water pump then back in the old pump for install was Solid Gold made the job on the 2013 4 hours total. Oh we also had the luxury of an air condition garage, it was a perk. Was surprised we got a new fan clutch with the pump, $ 105 at Auto Zone
Thanks from Bay Area California! know how to do this already but your video had the info i was looking for: torque specs, tips on little things i forgot from last time...replacing a 4 yr old dorman pump i already swapped from my 2013....OEM dodge this time! Nice delivery on the how to
Seriously the best. My hats off to you sir! Best help I've ever had on internet. Loved the part with the zip ties...lmbo so hard because my kid is one of them...😅😅
Bro I'm about to take on this project on my truck this video is extremely helpful at this point you save me 1/2 day of work thanks blessings to you. "** IF YOU CAN'T DODGE IT^** RAM IT 🐏 😎
2nd sign you see a bunch of antifreeze underneath! LOL! Great video Jeremy! I will be doing mine next week, also installing a EFan instead of Mechanical fan!
Nice video. Very helpful. My 2009 ram 1500 is leaking a lil by the gasket seam. As soon as I can I’m doing the job. Your video helps with the what your getting into aspect of the job. Some good tips here too.
Wow that’s crazy I have a 2012 as well at 110k and was planning on doing it for peace of mind 😂 I’m pretty sure you had some wrinkles to iron out as well with ur truck 😂
My truck won’t hit operating temp so I’m getting ready to do the thermostat plus the water pump since I’ll have the coolant drained. Good information. Especially with the radiator shroud. Thank you.
Thank you for this video. Im sure I will hire someone to do this for me now. I only hope I can get someone who knows what they are doing and are willing to do it right.
Any decent repair shop should be able to do a water pump on a Ram for you. It's very much the same as any other V8 engine going back ~75 years. The only tricky parts are not breaking the fan shroud on the bottom (whoops!) and keeping the bolts organized! Thanks for watching!
Great, my brother told me about using a hammer on the wrench, but seeing it is better for me. I bought a clutch wrench kit and couldn't get the dowels into the holes on the pulley. This helped alot.
Perfect little video in my opinion....short, helpful with tips/problems to watch out for included. Sense of humor was entertaining also. Give it a 5 stars. Now I can go help my sone change his😁
Thanks! Replaced my water pump a week ago in 4 hours lol that fan bolt was not kind at all. Happy to say no more leaking but now I have a P219A code. It's always something 🙁
I’m glad you were able to successfully swap the pump! If your engine light came on right after the job, it may be something you did. Maybe you mass airflow sensor is unplugged or not installed quite right? Maybe a connector nearby was unplugged by accident? Look around for the easy stuff! Good luck!
Just a tip, if’ Ya don’t have the air hammer tool thingy, it’s really simple to remove that lower piece of the fan shroud and then remove the rest of the fan shroud and the electric fan at the same time, and then you can remove the water pump with the fan still attached. I stuck the lower hose piece from the water pump over a jack handle and then put Vice Grips in the pulley and then was able to break that fan nut loose. Also nice to have the extra room when ya install the new pump, and then with the engine fan still out of the way, re-install the electric fan and the shroud and install the engine fan from the bottom.
Thank you! About 25 years ago I took a car apart for a restoration and put all the bolts in a 5-gallon bucket. It was that day that I learned this very important bolt-organization lesson. Lol. Thank you for watching the video! I appreciate it!
I have to replace mine. I’d love to see a video using air hammer to remove fan nut. Which air chisel bit? You just hit the nut with it? Not really understanding
Please excuse my ignorance, what kind of white sealant did you use on the two bolts? Thank you for uploading this, fellas like you make fixinig your own vehicle so much more approachable.
I watched your video over and over again and thought I was ready to do the job. I bought a water pump and radiator because I want to overhaul the system, however, I am having a lot of trouble just getting started. I cannot remove the fan. The nut is frozen on. I tried the big wrench and hammer first, and when that didn't work, I tried the air chisel like you did in the video. Then I bought a pneumatic fan clutch wrench ($$), but no luck with that either. It is just not coming loose. I'm anxious to get on with job. Do you have any suggestions? My compressor produces 5 CFM @ 90 psi. Do you know if that's enough power? Thanks
Make sure that you are turning it the correct way. I have read that some of these are threaded the opposite way depending on when the truck was built. I don’t know if that’s true. So it’s worth trying to spin it the opposite way to see what happens?
Dude, Awesome video, the way you explain things is great.... My only critique would be, you don't show the work being done. I would like to see the work actually being done, now I understand you're one guy you only have two hands, so I get it. Needless to say, I would like to see the actual wrenching of the volts coming out and the hoses coming out and etc etc. I'm sure you understand. Other than that, fantastic job, you sir have a new subscriber and I promise to smash that like button 🤘👍👍🤘 Take care buddy. ~Jonny5🥁
Great video Mate, can you please make a video on how to rewire a headlight on that same ram well my truck is a 2010 ram, I'm installing newer headlight with the projector and blinkers within the headlight. I swap lights but I cannot get the blinkers to turn on, just headlight turn on, please advise...thanks in advance.
Hey man! Where does the top hose coming from the heater core go on the water pump? I took both hoses off the water pump and my markings washed off. Thanks!!!!
You must be darn good at it by now! Do you think it is better or worse than doing 5.7L hemi spark plugs? Because I find the rear spark plugs particularly terrible on these trucks.
@@WiringRescue oh the water pump is definitely worse I hate it lol… the plugs my neighbor gave me a long reach permanently attached swivel head plug socket that I used for the rear plugs that saved my ass big time bc you just drop it down the hole then attach the ratchet and ur good to go. Definitely recommend getting one of those if you don’t already have one
You didnt have to burp the water pump ? at the Allen key ? Great video I just had a new pump installed when I replaced the motor 2 years ago and the gaskets leaking so I need to do this ugggg
I drove it around the block and then topped off the fluid, and it has been fine since. It’s not actually too bad of a job once you get the mechanical fan off. Just keep track of where all the bolts go because they are ALL different!
Thanks for this! I also have a ram1500 2009 with the hemi. My problem has been to fill coolant as it won’t let me top it up. Right now there is about 8liters or so and the coolant level on the cap on the radiator is barely moving. Also no heat in the car. Any tips?
Just did this same job the day before yesterday He worked fine until the next day now it's back blowing cold air on the driver side and warm air on the passenger side so how long did your air stay hot
The truck in the video still works fine. Engine temperature is normal and the heat works great! I’d recommend checking your antifreeze level, it may be low.
Great video,EXCEPT, you didnt show how to keep the pump pulley from moving with the fan. My fan nut is froze and i cant hold the pulley stationary to get the fan off. Im having a heck of a time. Any other suggestions? HELP. LOL
Great lol. Just changed the water pump for bad pulley bearing and decided to change the thermostat while I was in there. Now I have no heat and I’m worried I’m gonna overheat the engine
Did the heater work before in the truck? I'm having similar issues with the anti freeze leaking.. i replaced the thermostat and the housing.. but its having a massive leak of coolant and my heater still works.
so the water pump can still be damaged and work at the sametime while there is coolar or water in the radiator? just trying to make sure.. I though it could of been the crossover pipe that might be damaged@@WiringRescue
This video is going to be very helpful. I'm needing to replace my water pump on my 2009 Dodge 1500 and also wanting to replace the fan clutch as well. I looked at fan clutches on Rockauto and they list both standard rotation and counter clockwise rotation. Do you know which type I need? 🤔 thanks very much! 😁
i pulled many water pumps this one is by far the worst one ever. good notes, the fan shroud comes off first. Pull the plastic pins, the remove the shroud bolts then pull the lower shield off remove the clip that hold it to the radiator top and bottom.unplug the radiator fan and remove the fan and shroud at the same time. this leaves plenty of room to get the the mechanical fan a lot easier. in my case that fan wont come off with any trick I know and all the ones on here I tried before i found this great video. I even made a tool to hold the pulley with 1/4 steel coping the same tool i have for older chryslers and one for GM. any other tricks besides cranking the engine with a wrench in the fan nut? up date, had to use a 50" pipe wrench to hold the pulley and a cheater pipe on the fan nut.
Reason temp went high you had air bubble trapped. I went to Harbor Freight got radiator fill kit. Big container sits above radiator to allow air to escape
On average how long does it take to replace the water pump?? I need to have mine replaced (thankfully still under warranty) but I'd hate to be with out my truck for a day or two
It took me maybe ~3 hours to do, but I was also making a video which takes longer. So I would not think a shop would need the truck for more than a day. I bet a somebody that has done this a bunch of times (a dodge dealership technician) could do this in 1.5 hours. That being said, flat rate time is what you would pay, so you may pay for 3-4 hours. I’m just guessing at that though. Good luck with it! I’m cheering for you!
Hey man should the pulley that the fan is bolted on be able to spin by hand which the vehicle off ? Put a new belt on after old one snapped , snapped the new one instantly on start up only pulleys that don't spin by hand is the one I mentioned and the one beneath it to the left . 2011 ram 1500 5.7 4x4 . Any knowledge is appreciated bud .

Good vid. Fyi that plug above the thermostat is a high point coolant bleeder. Leave it open. Fill with coolant until it comes out the bleeder. Thanks.
Does the truck need to be running?
Not when you initially refill as the bleeder hole is at the top of the system. Add coolant to the minimum line in the overflow bottle. I just wanted to say thanks for the video. I used it to replace my water pump today with it being 7 degrees out in northeast Ohio lol. Thanks again!!

Awesome! I’m glad you liked it! Good luck with the repair!

I left all my boats in the water pump until I pulled it off and just set it up there when I put the new one on and swapped them from one to the other
Yeah brilliant, doing mine tomorrow!
$105 2 years ago... I just bought the pump with the clutch from Autozone today, and it was $184
Great video and thank you. Long weekend came, truck over heating, no shops open but had the water pump. Running like a top again. Cheers!
Heck yeah! Congrats on fixing it yourself! Nice work!

Great tips I wouldn’t have thought of! Great job!
enjoyed the video! have to tell you I thought Jim Cary was doing the video at first lol
Thanks for the video you made a crappy weekend a good day...not to mention all the sarcasm 😀
That’s fantastic! I appreciate you taking the time to watch my video! Thanks a bunch and good luck on your project!
Do you have a video to show how to get the serpentine belt on right?
Btw, your vehicle info on your cluster has a digital read out function that shows the actual temperature of your fluids 👍
Well damn, I did the water pump on my '15 Ram 2 days ago. Sure wish I had seen your video before that lol. Oh well....
That’s always the way!! Thanks for watching anyway! :D
What type of air chisel did you use ?
It was used when I got it 20+ years ago, so I’m not sure. Any air hammer / air chisel with the right attachment should do the job though!
Thank you Sir. Your Video was both very interesting and entertaining. Will perform this task on my Dodge next week. Greetings from Germany...
Thanks for the presion details.
Hey man! Where does the top hose coming from the heater core go on the water pump? I took both hoses off the water pump and my markings washed off. Thanks!!!!
I unfortunately didn’t own that truck, so I can’t tell you which hoses go where. Sorry about that!
I’m so sick of doing this job, this will be the 4th one in 5yrs on my 2012 ram and here for a refresher, thanks
@@HomeGrownPyro1have you been replacing with the OEM each time, or something else? Deciding on which manufacturer to go with.
@@aarony8534 naw unfortunately they weren’t OEM, they were carquest brand from advanced auto parts
How much coolant does it take to fill up the radiator?? I am need of changing my out as well
You didnt have to burp the water pump ? at the Allen key ? Great video I just had a new pump installed when I replaced the motor 2 years ago and the gaskets leaking so I need to do this ugggg
I drove it around the block and then topped off the fluid, and it has been fine since. It’s not actually too bad of a job once you get the mechanical fan off. Just keep track of where all the bolts go because they are ALL different!
@@WiringRescue that is great information to know and thank ya for it :)
Thanks for this! I also have a ram1500 2009 with the hemi. My problem has been to fill coolant as it won’t let me top it up. Right now there is about 8liters or so and the coolant level on the cap on the radiator is barely moving. Also no heat in the car. Any tips?
Hey nice video! I just have a question why did my engine overheat ?
I just found out recently that there's a coolant system bleeding screw I believe it's a 5/16 Allen bolt above the water pump close to the top
Therefore if you crack the bleeder screw and then you may not hooked up completely open that bottom drain

HELP. LOL
What a great video🤟
Thanks for watching! I appreciate it!
Could a bad water pump cause heater not to work?
yes
Pipe wrenched worked for me getting the fan off
Excellent! I'm glad to hear it came off without a major fight!
Nice one!
Thank you for watching!
Would you recommend a gates water pump over a mopar water pump? Both of my 2014 hemis are now on their third oem water pump.. 😆
I know the gates one fits well, and seems to work fine. So if your first 3 were oem, gates might be a nice alternative!
How long did it take you to change out the new pump
Probably 2-3 hours? I forget to be honest.
overall good job - i like your persoanlity - yoiu could have gone into more detail about how you removed and installed the fan. Thanks!
Great lol. Just changed the water pump for bad pulley bearing and decided to change the thermostat while I was in there. Now I have no heat and I’m worried I’m gonna overheat the engine
Top off your antifreeze, it’s probably too low.
Did the heater work before in the truck? I'm having similar issues with the anti freeze leaking.. i replaced the thermostat and the housing.. but its having a massive leak of coolant and my heater still works.
The heater didn’t work when the coolant was low, but when filled it worked great.
so the water pump can still be damaged and work at the sametime while there is coolar or water in the radiator? just trying to make sure..
Unfortunately, I am not sure. However, if you buy one, you'll have a 50% chance it is right! That's decent odds! Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
@@WiringRescue thanks! 😁👍
Great video! Subscribed
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
i pulled many water pumps this one is by far the worst one ever. good notes, the fan shroud comes off first.
Cool video
Thank you!
Great tips
Thank you! I appreciate you watching!
This was a fantastic video I really appreciated the cardboard layout definitely saved and subscribed for what I need to do my water pump
Thank you for watching! I greatly appreciate it!
you have to drain the cooling system to change the water pump?
Generally Yes. If not, when you pull the pump off the block, all the coolant in the engine splashes out everywhere.
Good info, thanks
You’re very welcome!
Being a former Chevy truck owner hate the mix of push pins and bolts Dodge/Mopar use
If you are talking about the waterpump pulley, it should spin if there is not a belt touching it.
Yes that's what I thought mine is froze up and snapped brand new belt on start up uts the water pump thank you
