      Ya that is a super good deal! Also, the Colony BYO frame flatland kit is on sale for $299! That would be a really great option for a rider who needs a bigger frame, but doesn’t want to dish out the money to build a fully custom bike.

    The Haro lineage range was based off of what use to be flatland/freestyle bikes. It's the reason you have something called flatland today and the geometry has been updated on the later ones. Guys still use them for flatland

    I love this. I really wanted the colony apprentice but got my Haro Shredder DLX 20 inch like 6 months ago. However over the last few months I've kept making my own modifications using more chromoly parts vs the standard steel on it. Plus swapping the standard pegs for plastic pegs and new tires making it way lighter. At this stage I'm gonna continue to modify it. But I will say being 5 ft 9 inches I really wanna get an 18.9 top tube frame. I may eventually take the frame out and get a Colony Sweet Tooth frame. Colony is awesome my favorite rider Nick Watts is part of their crew and the sweet tooth frame just looks sick. But I love this video my man

      @@flatlandjourney no doubt it's an awesome design. I love yours too man. I can't say enough how much I appreciate your channel. Being in my early 40s , I'm not sure your age, but it's nice to have teaching vids broken down easy to follow but informative enough. It's cool connecting with others that love flattor BMX in general. How old are you? Rad in 86 was the moment I fell in love with BMX and specifically flatland. I was 8 years old then.

      @@jaredharrison30 yeah man, one of the reasons I love flatland is because it is a more sustainable style of riding. I’m 32 years old, but the years of extreme sports took a toll on my body, so flatland is a great alternative to some of the higher impact sports.

      @@flatlandjourney I hear you man. Agreed 💯 percent too. I used to do all kind of BMX skateboarding rollerblading and soccer and martial arts as a kid and teen. Then got married at 21 stopped most of that stuff still did cardio and MMA type workouts but in the last year now 43 years old I fell back in love with flatland. Ironically it started a year ago while I was trying flatland scooter with my daughter. One day I said... I need a BMX bike. I'm way more comfortable on BMX. It's just always been my favorite

    What's Up? What size tires do you run. You should do a vid on tires and how sizes are different for flatland.
    Keep it up, I'm a 45yr old and broke my neck in 2015. I can't do street anymore and I'm getting into flatland and love ur vids.

      Hey Mike, thanks for the comment. As for tire size, I currently have 1.75 Colony Exon tires. Previously I had Odyssey Path tires that I believe were 2.0" (those are really hard to find now). So i went from one extreme to another as far as width is concerned.
      Man, a broken neck:/ I'm glad you made it through that. I actually switched to riding flatland because of medical reasons as well. I used to do dirt jumps. My doctor told me I had to stop. So, I looked for a safer option and finally found flatland bmx.

    I have a beginner question: can i use a flatland bmx for cruising, basic grinds and jumps like you’d do on a street bmx? I’m not the kinda guy who’s gonna do huge stair jumps and stuff, so I’m just checking out flatland bikes to see if it fits my needs.

    • @flatlandjourney
      @flatlandjourney  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, you can do a little of that. I’ve taken my Flatland bike to the skate park, and also use it to commute a couple miles here and there. However, if you plan to do jumps and grinds regularly, I would recommend getting a street BMX bike with a freecoaster and using it for Flatland as well. One example of a bike that is geared towards Street, but could work well for Flatland is the fit STR freecoaster bike.

  • @ODGuitars
    @ODGuitars 2 года назад +1

    I bought the Ares Sword since I'm 6', I replaced the free coaster which was garbage, ruined after a few rides
    Other than that, nice bike, but yeah I would probably get the Colony if I was on the market now.

    Just found your channel really liking it! I used to ride street back in highschool but took a break from BMX but want to try to get into the flatland side of things because I’m not trying to throw myself down big sets of stairs anymore. I didn’t know flatlanders rode such small top tubes I’m 5’3 and have a 20.75” Tt fit bike . How much of an impact will the shorter frame make for flatland ?

    • @flatlandjourney
      @flatlandjourney  Год назад

      Hey Ryan, I’m glad you are interested in flatland. It’s definitely more sustainable than street riding. As far as the top tube size goes, you are gonna notice a pretty big difference between a 20.75” and a smaller flatland bike. For someone who is 5’ 3” I would recommend something with a 19” or under top tube. It will be a bit easier to learn tricks. I’m 6’ 2” and I ride a 19.5” tt, which is a bit small. I would consider riding something 20” + since I’m pretty tall.

      @@flatlandjourney thanks for the reply! I’ll definitely be looking into getting a smaller flatland frame. I’ll just also need to get a free coaster since I’ve only ever ran cassettes. Would All my other parts should be okay for flatland? Most of my other parts are all pretty quality American made street parts

    • @flatlandjourney
      @flatlandjourney  Год назад

      Yes, all other parts should be fine. However, you might consider getting a complete flatland bike such as the Ares complete. You can get the whole set up for about the same cost as you a new frame and freecoaster wheel/hub. The bike would be the the perfect size for you. I also highly recommend the Far East Cycles complete bike if you can find one. You may want to email Patrick at flatland fuel to see if he has any in stock.

    What size bike and brand would you recommend for a 6ft guy wanting to do old school tricks?

    • @flatlandjourney
      @flatlandjourney  2 месяца назад

      Sorry for the late response here. A lot of it will depend on your price range.
      If you have some cash, the colony prody complete bike is the way to go. Occasionally, it won’t go on sale I’msourcebmx.com or Danscomp.com for around $800. That is a top-notch bike and also has some of that old-school style to it.
      If you are wanting to get a more cost-effective option, any of the Haro DLX models would be set up for old-school tricks out of the box. They come with front and rear brakes and four pegs.
      The Ares sword would be a middle of the road option for you. This bike includes a free coaster hub, which would allow you to do some new school tricks as well.
      Keep in mind that when people get their first bike, they often figure out what they would like or change as they develop as a rider. You may not know exactly what you want at first. so you kind of need to just get what you can’t afford and start riding. Then you can modify the bike to suit your preferences as you go.

    Newbie question: Can old school style curved seat posts fit on modern bikes like the Apprentice?

      Sorry for the late reply on this. Yeah those old seat post are called lay back seat posts. They are still used by some and are available atflatlandfuel.com. They would work with a bike like the Apprentice.

    ordered my wife a 2021 FitBikeCo PRK (xs) in Gold two days ago!
    ordering the Colony Apprentice for me in a couple days!
    exciting!
    any advise on what pegs would be nice for her PRK?

    • @flatlandjourney
      @flatlandjourney  Год назад

      That’s awesome, congrats on getting those bikes! Personally, I haven’t had a ton of experience with different pegs for bikes. I use regular street BMX pegs wrapped with grip tape, the same as for skateboards. If you wanted to get pegs that match the PRK, you could go for some 25 nine pegs that are sold on Amazon and put grip tape over a portion of the peg. If you are on a budget, the odyssey or Haro pegs are a good buy I think. Otherwise any of the nicer Flatland specific pegs would do well.

    The Ares Sword frame, fork and handle bars are made from 1020 Hi-Ten. is that strong enough for an adult flatlanding?

    • @flatlandjourney
      @flatlandjourney  Год назад +1

      It will get you started. Over time, the parts may bend. It would be fine for a lighter rider, someone under 150 pounds, but anything over that it will likely not hold up. However, if you are just testing out the sport, or trying to figure out what type of bike fits your style, the sword might be a good option. Typically what happens is a person will buy a bike when they first get into the sport, but they don’t really know what they want. Then after a number of months, if they are really progressing and getting into it, they realize they want something different, so they start changing out parts, not because they are broken, but just because they would prefer something different. Without in mind, the sword could be a great bike to start out on, and then you can upgrade parts as you go. Whether that be when they break, or just because you are wanting something different.

    Would the total killabee bmx bike be good for flatland?

    • @flatlandjourney
      @flatlandjourney  Год назад

      Ya that would be a great bike. Even though it’s not technically a flatland bike, it checks all the boxes. The one thing to keep in mind is that the head tube angle is pretty steep, which will make it easy to get into front wheel tricks, but potentially harder to balance. I would love to ride one sometime.
