This is so beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes. Lots of memories from the past. Mario Lanza was so young when he passed. Such talent. May he RIP. He's missed.

Yes, what you say is so true. Mario sang from his heart and so, he touches ours. So many singers strive for vocal perfection only, but forget to project feeling for what they are singing. That is a big mistake. Singing from his heart sets Mario apart from other singers as well as his beautiful voice. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
First of all, thank you for your service to our country and God bless you + family. I am very pleased that you like this video. As you say, Mario's beautiful voice and his manner of expressing the meaning of the lyics from the depth of his soul touch our hearts because it is true, not fake or forced, the emotion which he feels. Few singers, even those with technically perfect pitch and range, sing from the heart. I am also an Elvis fan. When he sings Take My Hand Precious Lord, I always cry.
I have heard a similar story also. Fact or fiction, we may never know the truth. Thank goodness Mario lives on for generations to come through the means of records, tapes, CDs, TV, radio, movies and now the RUclips. It always pleases me so much to hear from young people around the world who have met Mario for the first time via YT and are so thrilled by his gorgeous voice. Viva Mario. His incredible voice lives on for all of us to enjoy. What a wonderful legacy.

Blowing out a microphone is a sign of power but not of grace. In this recording, "Serenade," Lanza holds back and does not crush the music, but so often he just overdid it. You can hear the strain in his voice, sometimes a hint of squeakiness, sometimes, a desperate, audible intake of air, sometimes a punished vowel . These flaws are a result of insufficient training and explain why many operatic tenors sound more melodically fluid and graceful.

For me, the greatness of this is the unique Lanza combination of innocence, in the sound and use of words, the sound of a child at prayer, and then the silver metal of a man with a voice of suck virility. I find it in so many of his non-operatic recordings. Perhaps none more so than in this and his Guardian Angels which always makes me weep because of an innocence that no mainstream opera singer has. On the other hand, I really don't rate his operatic recordings that highly! Perhaps, because there is little scope for his unique childlike quality of innocence uncorrupted! He sings and prays!
Thank you for your comment, Andy. It is much appreciated. As I recall, the film director tried to advise Mario how to sing a certain song in the film. The man obviously knew nothing of music or Mario. Mario's plea for a new director fell on deaf ears, so Mario and the film parted company. Edmund Purdom replaced Mario and mouthed his voice, a new director was hired. The dollar intake of Mario's The Student Prince album far exceeded that of the movie at the box office. Bravo Mario Kind Regards
@LanzaFan1948 Ed, Thank you so much for your comment. This song is my husband's favorite as well. I see that you are also an Elvis fan. I only saw him perform live once. What a great thrill that was, I will never forget it. It was 1957 and I was just thirteen. He was and continues to be a great favorite of mine. My favorites are his gospel songs, he sang them with so much heart and feeling, just as Mario sang. Both he and Mario left us too soon. May they rest in peace. Kindest Regards
Thank you for your comment. I agree with you. It is truly one of Mario's best recordings. Thank you also for featuring Bobby Vinton's song "Blue Velvet" on your channel. He really did a great job with that song. Your choice of music on your channel is a walk down memory lane for people my age. Thank you for featuring them. Thank you again for your kind comment.
Thank you for this post. Lovely voice....my father was always listening to his records in the 1950's. Pity he did not feature in the The Student Prince...only his voice...what a voice!! Andy - Singapore

direct in the first place. That is the shortened version - believe me, there is much more detail! We can only be grateful that Mario at least stayed around long enough to record those gorgeous songs so gloriously! Incidentally, the suggestion that the Mafia played a role in Mario`s death is a piece of nonsense that refuses to quite die. The circumstances of his death at the Valle Giulia clinic in Rome are a matter of public record, & Mario`s son, Damon, had long dismissed the Mafia conspiracy
Thank you for your response to my comment. I did not know that Mario Lanza had made so many records, interesting to note that he has recorded some of the Great American Songbook. I particularly like Look for a Silver Lining. Thank you for your comment on my channel You will notice my taste is very broad
I was told by an opera singer I new well that when Lucky Luciano was deported to Italy that he was having a big party and had invited many friends telling them that Mario Lanza was to sing at the party. Lanza didn't show up and a week later he was dead.

+Pat Sanky That is where you and I and Mario's myriad of appreciative fans around the world play a role. We share our love of his incredibly beautiful voice with our families and friends personally and through such media as the RUclips. We open their hearts and minds to an appreciation of the excellent quality of his singing. Let's not forget that Pavarotti, Domingo and other opera singers loved him and popular singers such as Sinatra and Elvis loved him also. Mario said himself that he sings from his heart. By doing so, he deeply touches our own. To share his music with others is our own great reward. Kindest Regards, Sandra
@SalMessina1 Grazie mille, amico mio. Thank you very much, my friend. I am happy that you like this video. Long live Mario's memory and his legacy. Best Wishes Always
Sandra ^_^ Just to expand a little.. the director was the Curtis Bernhardt,a pompous overbearing German of the old Hollywood school, given to walking around with a stick & poking people with it. He & Mario clashed on the very first day of principal rehearsals when he told Mario his acting was too emotional. Mario promptly left the set, appealed to producer Joe Pastrenak from whom he got no support, then didn`t turn up the next day. He did eventually return to record the the songs, recording most
@maureen1938 Thank you for favoriting this video and my newest one, If (They Made Me A King), you are very kind. I like your selection of videos. I remember listening to recordings of Jacqueline François in French class. My favorite Mademoiselle de Paris. And Edith Piaf, her La Vie En Rose is so hauntingly beautiful. I see that you like Al Jolson too. I have long been a fan of his too. I guess that my favorite one of his is About A Quarter To Nine. Thank you again for your lovely comment.
I happen to adore bassos! What deep, rich tones a basso possesses, they are thrilling Don't regret what you have not, rejoice in the wonderful talent you have. God gave you a wonderful gift; share it with us with all your heart. Mario is an inspiration to young tenors, may you be such to other bassos. Thank you again for your comment. Take Care
Rodger, by golly, you are truly a fountain of information. How can I thank you? You are a true friend to help me out when I need it. Please do not apologize for such thoroughness of information. As a retired school teacher, I love reading such facts. Thank you again for taking time out to help inform me and others.
Guy CREQUIE
Ok, you as me sums of the admirors of this single voice. Why, at the time from the 50 ème birthday of its disappearance no producer planned to make a film on its voice and its career alas, too short ? the title could have been: Mario LANZA = the voice of the 21st century! As a humor I will say: would it be necessary that I sing so that this film is done? Amitiés.Guy CREQUIE
Next to Mario, came Pavarotti. The only and two best men as TENORS in the wide world. The world lost two gems, two imperfect men with a appetite (literally) for food and drink, but the love of music. Mario, heart attack at 35, and Luciano, at 70, pancreatic cancer.
Guy CREQUIE
Small presentation of Mario Lanza the voice of Mario Lanza, it is at the same time: - Power of that of Enrico Caruso, - The softness of that of Beniamino Gigli, - a recognizable stamp of voice of emblé, like the east that of Luciano Pavarotti, - a pallet of nuances in the vocal expression, as can the being the richness of the colors of a fabric of Master, - An irreproachable diction, a single emotion given by God or universe. This won't be the nicest serenade if it were sang by any other tenor! QUOTE Mario Lanza had to open his mouth, and out came something sounded like thunder having sex. Or mountain dissolving. Or God crying..... by Rupert Smith, December, 2005 UNQUOTE Sorry for having it quoted repeatedly as I just simply want more Mario fans and fans to be to get the beautiful comments!
Roger Wauters - What should be with them, Lanza and Caruso are present worldwide, Gigli and Björling are in their home countrys present, not worldwide, Google search 1920.

Irina, My Internet translator gave the following translation, but I have attempted to put the words together as I believe that you wished to say. (My translator is a free of charge and I fear it makes some translation mistakes. So, first I give the Internet translator attempt, then I try to put the words as I believe you meant to say. Translation given by an Internet translator: "This amazing recording was made in one take. It is a pity that because of personal hostility directed film "Prints- student" Curtis Bernhardt Mario Lantsa. my could not enjoy the game and great acting this amazing man, but only, it is fortunately only his voice .From opens his mouth Edmund Purdoma ..but the paradox is that this director -That was replaced by former Richard Thorpe .. And Mario had suffered irreparable "blow" on the health and financial status". I think that the translation meant to say, "This amazing recording was made in one take. It is a pity that because of personal hostility film director Curtis Bernhardt had against Mario Lanza during the shooting of "Student Prince", we could not enjoy the play and great acting of this amazing man, but only, it is fortunate only when Edmund Purdom opened his mouth, Mario's voice was heard, but the paradox is that this director - was replaced by former Richard Thorpe .. And Mario had suffered irreparable "blow" on the health and financial status." Yes, it is unfortunate that the wrong director was chosen. He must have not appreciated the great talent of a marvelous tenor such as Mario. Any good film producer takes time to understand the particular quality of the script which he is asked to put into production. If he or she cannot, then it should be sold to someone else who understands and appreciates it. If the producer is unaware or unappreciative of the quality of opera, then it should be passed to another. If he decides to go ahead with the production of a film which he does not particularly care for, then he needs to find a director who does appreciate opera and opera singers in order to make a successful film at the box office. To enter into a contract which presents a play (operetta) and/ or opera singers for which there is no liking, is absolutely senseless and counterproductive. I believe that not only is Bernhardt responsible for his bad treatment of Mario, but ultimately the producer who selected Bernhardt, is the one whom we should hold responsible. The producer should have known something about opera and opera singers, enough anyway, to be able to select a proper director. This also opens the question of whether the producer and/ or director had personal past dislike for opera and/ or opera singers, or perhaps with Mario in particular. Kindest Regards, Sandra
Irina, You have said it all. There is nothing that I may add. Producers and directors should leave it to the audiences to decide what they like and spend their money on. Producers should present a film, even one that they, themselves, don't like, then wait and see if the viewing audience approves of it or not. If the audience approves, then the producers, actors, etc. make money. If there is disapproval, there is no money in making more of the same kind. Rather simple, isn't it? Thank you for taking your time to explain what happened to Mario and Gable. It is most appreciated. I have heard the story before and it infuriates me every time I think of those two ignorant men, Shary and Berghard. Those egotistical sots thought only of themselves and not their audience. How foolish and stupid of them. But the Mario's and Gable's fame and popularity have continued to be formidable so many years even after their deaths. How would Shary and Berghard explain that?!! Kindest Regards, Sandra
No other tenor in history can sing like this man. Another class another world

Bravo Mario

Brilliant song great singer.
Thank you for your lovely comment.
What a wonderful memory to treasure.
May you have a Happy Valentine's Day tomorrow.
Thank you again.
Thank you so much for your high praise.
You are very kind.
May you enjoy my other videos with Mario as much.
@LanzaFan1948
Ed,
Thank you so much for your comment.
Kindest Regards
beautiful song and beautiful unique voice- sad he died so young
Uno de los más grandes. Gracias
Great singer.

@MegaMusiclover1234 He is unique, I am a fan since I was a child, my mother tought me to love Mario, anyway it was unnecessary we deserves to be loved, ne one's voice is like his. Just wonderful!!
direct in the first place.
Student Prince.
Thank you for your response to my comment. I did not know that Mario Lanza had made so many records, interesting to note that he has recorded some of the Great American Songbook. I particularly like Look for a Silver Lining.
Thank you for your comment on my channel You will notice my taste is very broad
I was told by an opera singer I new well that when Lucky Luciano was deported to Italy that he
was having a big party and had invited many friends telling them that Mario Lanza was to sing
at the party. Lanza didn't show up and a week later he was dead.
un comentario muy acertado colega !Saludos!
Terrific song and excellent vid clip artistically matched up... thanks for uploading.

In English, you wrote, "I listen to and listen to, and I can not hear enough so great and the music and the voice."
Thank you for your comment. May you continue to listen to Mario's beautiful voice on RUclips, via my channel and those of other Mario Lanza channel up-loaders and of course, via CDs. Mario made several movies. I guess that my very favorite of his movies is the one he played Enrico Caruso in the film "The Great Caruso". That one and his others are for sale through Turner Classic Movies at the following URL: shop.tcm.com.
Thank you again for your lovely comment.
Kind Regards,

why don't we hear him on the radio a whole generation have never heard his golden voice ..

That is where you and I and Mario's myriad of appreciative fans around the world play a role.
Kindest Regards,
Sandra
None can compare to Mario.
Superb
@SalMessina1
Grazie mille, amico mio.
He did eventually return to record the the songs, recording most
Just beautiful. When I sang with a Chora group in Mundelein,IL,his son sang some soos wih our group. He was very good, but nottlike his fatherl
Don't worry yourself about any typos. It is the information that is important.

@CREQUIE - OK Perfect. beautiful.
@maureen1938
Thank you for favoriting this video and my newest one, If (They Made Me A King), you are very kind.
What deep, rich tones a basso possesses, they are thrilling
Don't regret what you have not, rejoice in the wonderful talent you have. God gave you a wonderful gift; share it with us with all your heart.
Mario is an inspiration to young tenors, may you be such to other bassos.
Thank you again for your comment.

Rodger, by golly, you are truly a fountain of information. How can I thank you? You are a true friend to help me out when I need it. Please do not apologize for such thoroughness of information. As a retired school teacher, I love reading such facts.
Thank you again for taking time out to help inform me and others.
May I wish that you and yours have a wonderful Christmas, if we do not connect again before then.
Take Care and Thanks Again
P.S. How strange, poking the actors with a stick! UGH!
@CREQUIE
Guy CREQUIE
Be my Valentine x♥️o.
This was the.FIRST recording before the soprano sang her part added in N Y w Studio in full refined,.....
He is kind of the Rocky of Tenors. I can see him in a sweatshirt, singing this from the steps of the library....oh, wrong movie.
"Mario ate too much! Ridiculous? But they said he could put away half an oxe at one seating!"
@CREQUIE Yes, not bad for a kid from Philadelphia! : )
Small presentation of Mario Lanza
the voice of Mario Lanza, it is at the same time: - Power of that of Enrico Caruso,
- The softness of that of Beniamino Gigli,
- a recognizable stamp of voice of emblé, like the east that of Luciano Pavarotti,
- a pallet of nuances in the vocal expression, as can the being the richness of the colors of a fabric of Master,
- An irreproachable diction, a single emotion given by God or universe. Guy CREQUIE
This won't be the nicest serenade if it were sang by any other tenor!
QUOTE
Mario Lanza had to open his mouth, and out came something sounded like thunder having sex. Or mountain dissolving. Or God crying..... by Rupert Smith, December, 2005
UNQUOTE
Sorry for having it quoted repeatedly as I just simply want more Mario fans and fans to be to get the beautiful comments!
He was my mom's favorit, but what about Caruso, Gigli or Björling?
Roger Wauters - What should be with them, Lanza and Caruso are present worldwide, Gigli and Björling are in their home countrys present, not worldwide, Google search 1920.
Also, apologies for the careless typos! R :>)

Je vous remercie encore pour votre commentaire. Votre commentaire a l'air de poesie. Est-ce que vous etes poete? Merci encore.
Thank you again for your comment. Your comment seems poetic. Are you a poet? Thanks again.
Lanza was murdered by mobsters in Las Vegas. My best friend lived with his son for 4 years. What a voice! Better than Caruso's.

Irina,
My Internet translator gave the following translation, but I have attempted to put the words together as I believe that you wished to say. (My translator is a free of charge and I fear it makes some translation mistakes. So, first I give the Internet translator attempt, then I try to put the words as I believe you meant to say.
Translation given by an Internet translator: "This amazing recording was made in one take.
Yes, it is unfortunate that the wrong director was chosen.
Kindest Regards,
Sandra
Irina,
You have said it all.
Kindest Regards,
Sandra
