    Mine did that 1st day I had it in manual not an aggressive flight just testing its capabilities. Hit the ground and then headed for the heavens. I didn't buy this for hard-core acro work I have other whoops and quads for that but I don't think it should have acro if it can't do a mild pace 180 yaw spin even. Tbh I was pretty gutted to of scratched mine up on the 1st day for a minor maneuver. Its an expensive thing to be crashing over a fault not pilot error. This "band aid" actually narrows its uses and makes it more unreliable to get the shot when it counts for anything at pace.

    Thanks Ian, very good information.
    I personally have no desire to purchase the Avata. Too heavy and too noisy for most of the areas I live. Personally I prefer sub 250g for UK flights.
    But if I did own this then I'd be very grateful for all this information. Once I knew their was a problem like this I'd fly in such a way as not to trigger it.

    Thanks Ian it’s good to see someone still giving us updates on this situation, someone who isn’t brainwashed by DJI for free products.
    unfortunately I’m now one of the statistics who has lost my Avata over water flying through a quarry due to the same issue - yaw turn malfunction! I tried so hard not to do a sharp yaw turn but that’s quite impossible for
    Someone who flys manually every week with other quads, even tho I was flying quite gently when it happened.
    After going through the process with DJI submitting the flight logs and actual video, they were quick to come back with an answer saying “it was pilot error” The pilot tried to do a right flip resulting in loss of altitude causing the aircraft to crash 😂 even tho my video clearly shows when I did a right sharp yaw turn the Avata dropped left and flipped over into a freeze position which unfortunately didn’t recover and put me in the water.
    Naturally I kindly disputed the data analysis team who was handling my case and asked for another team member to review my case for a second opinion!
    Two weeks in no word so I emailed them for an update, I was then told my case will be looked at by a senior engineer and that was 2 weeks ago! So almost 4 weeks in I’m still at the mercy of the Data analysis team who are either making me wait on purpose because I disputed their assessment or there is some serious data analysing going on to try and figure out why this happened!
    Either way I’m absolutely disappointed with the way they are handling this and even more disappointed for buying the Avata in the first place since it can’t even do a simple yaw turn. Once this is resolved either way I’ll be selling my Avata.

    • @LowryDroneography-Steve
      @LowryDroneography-Steve Год назад +1

      Na I did the same thing several times on purpose early October and batteries were relatively warm. Whether people believed it or not, its just a trait of this drone cos it’s not meant to do moves like that and isn’t designed well for it. If I fly it fairly erratically but without sharp yaw spins, I have no problems. If this problem occurs when people are flying chilled, then it becomes a problem. I’ve not experienced that though.

    • @SkeezyFPV
      @SkeezyFPV Год назад +2

      It flies like shit with cold batteries. Let’s be honest. I haven’t flown in a few days because of the temperature and how the avata flies in the cold. It’s fine if I’m flying cautiously but forget trying to do anything that might require me to punch out or pull out from a loop or anything like that. I really like my avata but it’s not very good in the cold and/or moderately gusty winds. The FPV drone is way better in those conditions. I wish it wasn’t such a pain to switch between quads. DJI should fix that.

    • @LowryDroneography-Steve
      @LowryDroneography-Steve Год назад +1

      @@SkeezyFPV I do agree with that completely, theres a difference. If you keep the batteries warm it’s not too bad but below freezing outside and there’s no point regardless. I don’t think the cold contributes towards the tumble/flip at all because this has been proven, however cold conditions definitely help this drone even less than they do others.

      @@LowryDroneography-Steve It is poorly written software. They messed up either AHRS (unlikely as it quite quickly recovers when switched to stabilized mode) or angular rate controller though it should be hard as acro should be body frame rates anyways.

      @@LowryDroneography-Steve I warmed my batteries up today with the windshield defroster for about five minutes before I flew today in -2 C and I got the throttle restriction at 47%. 13 minutes flight time but I didn’t do any flippy floppy stuff and flew pretty conservatively. That’s about a minute short of what I’d normally get. I think 10-15 C is the sweet spot temp-wise for these batteries. It was nice getting out after almost a week of only flying the sim :)

    Great video Ian. That loss of control scenario is scary if that flying brick was in a city. I've got a video on an overcast day where the AVATA started drifting backward using the motion controller. After it crashed into a wall, I attempted another flight and the same thing happened again. It's been a day and I just tried it indoors. I also did the firmware update. Things seem back to normal without drift. But that's scary. What if I was doing a car show gig and the thing suddenly drifted away scratching up paint jobs? Spooky.

    • @tymoteuszkazubski2755
      @tymoteuszkazubski2755 Год назад

      Some issues are pretty hard to properly fix but impeding problem can be detected relatively easily.
      For example Apollo command module had an attitude gyro with three gimbals. It would lockup when put into certain attitudes so if the CM was nearing these attitudes it would show a warning if pilot got too close to an unsafe attitude (gyros don't like being forced to rotate any other way and can react violently when gimbals lock up) the system would be disabled and attitude reference would be lost.
      Fixing this would require installing heavier and more complex gyroscope that would have an actively driven gimbal keeping it from locking up. This would be really expensive as said gyro was sitting on top of a Moon rocket where every ounce has significant impact on performance.

    My opinion is that DJI manufactured bad FCs and didn’t realize it until it fell out of the sky and it’s too late to go back. Or, they deliberately manufactured it that way in an attempt to increase the revenue from repairs and care refresh.

    I tried putting it in manual mode yesterday, but got stuck at the stick instruction message, not sure I want to continue after seeing your video. On hindsight: all DJI drones have a maximum turn (pitch roll and yaw) rate in the IMU, you can try this before landing, let it (avata or mini 3 pro) hover where you can grab it with your hand. Now turn it over rapidly and you will see the error message "maximum imu rate, motors stopped" (or something similar) on the controller display. I'm not sure whether this also happens in manual mode, but if that safety precaution is still there in the software then the Avata will be limited in acro mode.

    It’s clearly tougher than a s**t- house rat 🐀 so there’s nothing wrong with DJI’s choice of plastics. I’m not sure this Yaw flip issue can be resolved since it’s partially an aerodynamic phenomenon. The software element of the problem can be resolved given enough motivation for DJI to get it done. This was a super doopa , comprehensive review and offered us more insight into this issue.😎👍🇬🇧

    • @MadRC

    • @wearemany73
      @wearemany73 Год назад +2

      @@MadRC The aerodynamic element of the problem is making the FC crazy. The adjacent motors of front right and rear left are spooling up while front left and rear right are wound down in order to induce enough torque rotation to initiate the yaw left. These factors compound each other along with battery sag, under-powered motor/weight ratio and it’s a perfect storm of many contributing factors conspiring to create the Yaw Flip Issue. The FC is unable to demand enough authority from its array of resources and “freaks out” (“freaks out” is scientific terminology 🤓)

    We got 2 new Avatas for Christmas and were having trouble with one of them. We also have 4 batteries. One Avata works great, not one problem, but the second one keeps giving me battery communication errors. As you probable already know the 2 small pins that are next to the main battery leads are staggered in length. On the Avata thats giving me the problem, as long as I have the battery seated it seems to be ok ,but if I BARELY move the battery connector it starts giving me the errors. The other Avata doesn't have this problem. I think that the shorter plug (Data)might be just a tad to short and is breaking connection, even when flying. I really hope this doesn't happen to the Avata thats working great. All 4 of the batteries are doing the same thing on the bad Avata. I have the latest firmware on everything.

    My avata has fallen out of the sky about 5 times for probably two different reasons. Sometimes the aircraft will just shoot to one side until it crashes no way to pull it out, and I have had the googles just DC from the avata for no good reason that I can think of except one and maybe the battery plug was not pushed down hard enough? I really dont know cause it crashes and the batter pops off. But ya those two reason both have happened to me more then once have brought my drone down. I will say this as much as I have crashed it (im still a newb manual flyer) it just keeps going. I have had to change props a few times, and the cage is really banged up and green from grass... it just keeps flying . They at least built it tough.

    I was following 2 avata pilots today (one on the motion controller, one on the grey tango clone) with my 5" OG air unit on crossfire. Caught a video of them both going beserk, both pilots losing control at the same time, approx 150feet from the pilots. First Avata accelerated left and into the roof, and then at the same spot the 2nd one also lost control, and the Avata swerved into the same wall and crash out both pilots. They broke ducts and props....within LOS of the pilots.(My 5" freestlye drone was fine, thanks for asking 🤣). It's weird that they would have a loss of control at such short range, i'm assuming they interferred with each other, since i'm not using 2.4ghz and religiously turn off wifi n bluetooth and a lack of GPS and dark floor was too much for the lil plastic guys to simply hover and wait for the crappy rc link to come back.

    Thanks Ian. For those who want to see another example of the Yaw issue itself check out my video where it happened twice within a couple minutes. Feel free to skip to 15:55 to see just those parts. This so-called "fix" in the firmware update is not a fix at all. It simply tries to force the drone to level out, brake itself and go into Normal mode. This is somewhat helpful to prevent a crash, but it completely takes away the ability to fly in Manual Mode, uninhibited. This drone was marketed as a drone that could fly in Manual mode, and this issue where the drone freaks out and flips upside down is Not Resolved in the least. This is like your car slamming on the brakes if it senses wheelspin. DJI, please fix this. It may need a PID Tune adjustment in some new firmware, but guys, don't believe the hype about this being caused by it's weight, CG or aerodynamics. This is the Flight Controller Spazzing out and reacting in a way it shouldn't. It needs to be fixed.

      Drama much?! Ian was purposely flying crazy in a way that 99.9% of Avata customers will never do! Remember that the vast majority of customers are flying the Avata with the motion controller and even those that are using the RC2 are largely flying in Normal or Sport mode. It is only a small portion of the customer base that are actually flying in manual mode and an even smaller portion that are trying to do flippy floppies with the cinewhoop oriented Avata. And now for them, when a known conduction happens, instead of crashing, they will now just go into normal mode. It’s not perfect, but a fairly decent compromise. If you want a sport bike, buy a sport bike, not a Harley! If you want a flippy floppy drone, don’t buy a cinewhoop!
