It doesn’t matter what type of caravan, motorhome, camper one gets there will always be things you love and ‘hate’ about them. Your Myrtle is a honey. You should be very proud of her (and yourselves of course!)
The good thing about water is you could always purchase an inexpensive water bladder that is around 105 litres and it lies on the floor in the back seat of your 4wd. Or you could always add another 150 litre tank under Myrtle if weight allows that! Hope that helps, phil
Wow! After such a major 1st caravan build, those negatives you mention are certainly only minor issues. If they're all you're unhappy with, you should congratulate yourselves with being so successful!!! And thinking through possible remedies, they can all be fixed at small cost and with not a lot of effort. For example, the toilet problem can be rectified by turning the toilet around so your knees are facing the bathroom door. The rear window dust problem, seal it shut, you've got a window and a ceiling vent over your bed. The cooktop exhaust fan, put a 12v fan in the front wall with a hatch door on the outside for when driving. A custom build/prototype needs testing and perfecting, and you both now have the experience and the skills to make that all happen. Looking forward the the perfecting videos, and congratulations again for being so successful!
I love how you started by saying that this video was about the things you didn't like about Myrtle and it turned into things that you love about Myrtle.😅
Hi, love knowing you really love your caravan “Myrtle” Older caravans have so much character even when they’ve had a spruce up. You have to remember 50, 60, 70 years ago this is all that people had to travel around Australia in. Usually with a Holden or Ford sedan towing them. Now Myrtle can do it again and prove age doesn’t matter. Sweet travel memories with Myrtle.
I think the suspension would be fine Off road, it's the rest of the van I would be concerned about. Dust and bugs getting in are the other two issues I would not like to deal with. Someone please sponsor these guys and give them a new van! They would be great promoters of your products. !
Roller rocker suspension has been around for a long time. It will go almost anywhere if you control, air pressure in tyres, speed & your right foot. Quite a few completing Gibb River road etc. Even a you tube video of a repairer in WA changing back to roller rocker from independent on his own van.
Yup agree entirely, our 2015 19'6 with roller rocker has been down the Birdsville, Oodnadatta and Tanami tracks with no issue and a 'few tracks' that aren't on the maps ! Drop your tyre pressurs and drive to conditions and all is good!
Thank you for this ‘review’ of Myrtle. After watching all your renovations it’s so helpful to hear your honest lived experience of those decisions you made.
Hey Guys awesome vids, Just wanted to let you know that you inspired us to renovate a 1972 Viscount van with the curved front and back windows. Well absolutely loved it and now we have fully renovated 4 of them. 1972, 1975, 1975 & the best one of them all a 1968. All these vans are at our home away from home near Wilson’s Promontory Vic. Thanks so much for your inspiration as I have possibly another three to renovate. Cheers Scott & Tammy
hi guys you can get an exhaust fan unit from bunnings it has charcoal filters built in which are replaceable. it can be switched over to an outside vent . the brand we bought was a Bellini. it works great, has a built in light also 3 speed fan. keep up the great videos, love the van. beautiful couple.
I use rock lights with rubber mounts around my Patrol and it works great for camping and security. I got mine from Terralume which came with 8 lights and a control box and works straight off the 12v. Thought I would suggest it for you guys.
Hi Jack and Megan great build on Myrtle. You should have a look at Stedi for outside lighting as they are small and compact, but can throw a great light.
Hey Jack, the water hammer in the pipe's is likely caused by the mixer taps, they are very much either on or off, not really a soft closing valve. You can get a surpressor from bunnings and T it into the pipes behind the shower, it'll fit in the cavity you have there. Good vid guys, great tips. Safe travels guys.🤙
Buy a bucket from bunnings with sealed lid so if you are off grid & toilet gets full, you can decant some waste into bucket. A lot cheaper than buying a spare toilet cassette.
Hey guys I live in a caravan here in NZ and I just Love what youve done with Mertle.. A couple of ideas for you...have you thought about magnetic or Velcro fly screens. A good upholsterer would be able to sew you up some. And I use Infared LED lighting that sticks to my ceiling with magnets and small metal bits that double side tape on to the ceiling. They are USB chargable. Theres loads of Outside USB LED options available too. Worth a look 😊 Ive just bought a diesel heater for my caravan too so Im looking forward to setting it up 😊 😊😊
Something I really like about Myrtle is the separation of bedroom and living room. In modern caravans the bed seems to dominate the space so much. I think if you did find a caravan manufacturer willing to work with you they should let you design the layout and decor. I think you’d do so much better than the caravan manufacturers do. As well, it would be good to be able to choose the suspension, etc. you did mention maybe working with a company in the future, but I wouldn’t want to see you going with a stock design.
Let just say this,I would take the old caravans over the new ones they put out here in the United States. I've only had mine for four years. Got it in August of 2020 before the factories started having supply issues. Now my floor in one area is feeling soft, yet I have no leaks. Now we have to take the underbelly down and see what's going on under there. Od it a fram issue or is the kitchen gray tank leaking? Wish us luck!!!
In America, back before Winnebago's and slide on Truck Campers were a thing, Companies would convert Caravans into Front Wheel Drive Car/Campers by grafting the front of a Car onto the Chassis where the A-Frame is, and you would drive from inside the Caravan looking out the front Window, there's still some examples on the internet, along with other crazy ideas, one being the VW Bugger, that went on a VW Bug floor and turned it into a Camper Van, a product of mans ingenuity and want to travel, started a industry that's still going strong.
I'm loving Myrtle! I'm at the door/drawer front stage of my reno. What thickness ply did you use and what would you use next time? Have you thought about using the DIY magnetic flyscreens? you can buy kits from Bunnings. Happy travels
If you have a bit of pipe push it back into the wall a few inches it will probably stop the noise. Our new van did that and under the van I just pushed what I could further back into the wall which stopped it.
Having renovated a caravan before I think you have done an amazing job. One thing I noticed is why did you not put the shower where the wardrobe is seems to be more space ??
Can you get a small exhaust fan above stove for caravans ? There is a rubber thingys you can get to seal to put around doors and windows. Similar to the seals you find on car doors.
Hi jack and Megan while a off road van is they are not necessary the main thing is ground clearance which you have got when on bad roads you just have to be a bit careful and take your time and enjoy all the best Ron
Hey mate along with putting in a extra tank have you ever given a Water Bladder a thought You can get them for the back seat footwell and then grab a extra 120 ltr of water when needed Just a thought??
Hi we love you channel please never stop. Have you thought of turning you leaf springs up the other way gives you more clearance. Once again love you work and so glad we found you.🎉 Just a thought look into it first
I have since insulated the pipes and it has fixed the noise 👍 wrapped some closed cell tape around the pipes. But yes if I want to run a lower pressure when using the water I’ll need an accumulator.
There's a lesson to be learnt there. Evaluate the collective recommendations of your viewers who's had far more experience. Understand why they are recommending these, and maybe it's for a good reason from experience.
Hi, guys. I hope you guys are doing great. we see Myrtle is holding up to its tortured test. There is always something to do on a caravan when travelling. we hope you have sorted out your limp mode situation. I sent you a pm on Messenger because we had the same problem now and again, but we fixed it all now. Great videos. we are in NSW maclan, leaving tomorrow safe travelling cheers 🍻.
What about an awning off the side?? I've never seen you guys mention an awning maybe a missed the reason you don't have one. Do you find you don't sit outside as much because you don't have undercover/shade space next to the van??
Do you have enough room under your sink to put a trap. If so they are about $10 from Bunnings and that will stop the grey water smell coming through the sink
Yet another great video guys. East-West bed no thank you. Especially when you get older and need the toilet more often. Your build is great. Having owned a van I think I may have done the layout a little different but different strokes for different folks. Stay safe guys.

Haha we do love our Myrtle! 😂
@itsJackandMegan How could you not? She's a beautiful classic 😊
I hear you Myrtle…. I’m 51 years old and falling apart as well…
Hi, love knowing you really love your caravan “Myrtle” Older caravans have so much character even when they’ve had a spruce up. We absolutely love your charging draw. It’s a constant frustration so kudos to you guys for thinking outside the box ❤

Ooo thanks for this I’ll have a look!
What a great idea making this video . Very informative . So happy things are working out for you guys .
One option for positive pressurisation is a 100mm boat bilge fan and washable pod filter. You can install it in a cupboard. All for under $200
I use rock lights with rubber mounts around my Patrol and it works great for camping and security. I got mine from Terralume which came with 8 lights and a control box and works straight off the 12v. Thought I would suggest it for you guys.

Just saw your Centrum ad last night watching Binge even my 80 year Dad knew who I was talking about he loves your videos. Happy Travels Guys.
Someone pls sponsor these two and give them a freakin new Caravan 😂👍
We wish hahah
I agree. Give these guys a new van. These guys are one of the best if not the best travelling RUclipsrs.
@ 🙏
Enjoy every bit of Myrtle! These old caravans used to go so many places before the new fancy ones came along. 😊
Yes you did say “car” and Kilcoy in QLD is Yowie territory. They even have a huge statue of a Yowie there.
You should try a new Joolca separating toilet. They aren’t that expensive and you can use composting.
Hey guys I live in a caravan here in NZ and I just Love what youve done with Mertle..

Put in another water tank in and find 10mm old conveyor belt rubber and glue it on.

100% agree with the anti-yowie; anti-yobo security lights Jacko !!
100% wish I had done it when we built it!

Dust reduction system go in the roof or you can buy a fan for positive pressure
Great video. Very helpful. I have a campervan and can only use my air con when plugged in. What one do you have for off grid?
Use the child proofing sliding draw devices available guys!
Have ya looked at the new Joolka toilet? lots of options.....
You both did such an amazing job, it’s a gorgeous van 💜 Giving me the itch to buy an older van and renovate too 😂

Need led lights on a sensor around caravan that turn on when movement outside. Also cctv cameras on outside of caravan.
Can you get a small exhaust fan above stove for caravans ? There is a rubber thingys you can get to seal to put around doors and windows. Similar to the seals you find on car doors.
Hi jack and Megan I have a cubicle in my caravan and could not carry or plumb water so instead have a sponge shower (no shower)
Hi jack and Megan while a off road van is they are not necessary the main thing is ground clearance which you have got when on bad roads you just have to be a bit careful and take your time and enjoy all the best Ron
How about wire basket drawers in your clothes cupboard! At least you could fill them..maybe things would fall off the shelves.
That's my idea anyway.😍
Hey mate along with putting in a extra tank have you ever given a Water Bladder a thought
You can get them for the back seat footwell and then grab a extra 120 ltr of water when needed
Just a thought??
So glad you did the bathroom. Remember you scratched it off the plans. Ha ha
Hi we love you channel please never stop. Have you thought of turning you leaf springs up the other way gives you more clearance. Once again love you work and so glad we found you.🎉 Just a thought look into it first
Your suspension is fine, you just need to extend the draw bar back to meet it, not a big job.
Insulation won't fix water hammer. Just put an accumulator in.
I have since insulated the pipes and it has fixed the noise 👍 wrapped some closed cell tape around the pipes. But yes if I want to run a lower pressure when using the water I’ll need an accumulator.
Jack add a Hepvo one way waste water valve easy as to fit just have to cut drain pipe and slide in less than $100 smelly problem fixed
What was the TOTAL cost of doing ya van up from purchase to hitting the road??
Next, not another van but a Myrtle rebuild?
You need a one way valve in your shower line. SEAFLO PVC WASTE VALVE "HEPO-VALVE' WHITE look these up, you should be able to fit it
Thanks for this, I’ll definitely have a look at this!

Cool Ep guys, Why not fit a 200lt water bladder in the 100 series
Hi guys what about an additional water bladder to help with those off grid times.
Hey forgot to mention. We do have an extra 40lt tank in the car.
What about wireless chargers
Will you be taking Mrttle across to Tasmania
put a inline waterless trap under the van
Hello from Ireland🤚🏻
Hey thanks for watching!
Do you have enough room under your sink to put a trap. If so they are about $10 from Bunnings and that will stop the grey water smell coming through the sink
Hey, we do have one under the sink.. it’s the bathroom one we don’t.
great idea to show your bad points for us to learn from.
The FJ is so upset you forgot its rebuild .....
What’s going on Jack, one spotty on the cruiser 😢

Haha you guys are crack ups
Thanks for watching mate!
Yet another great video guys. East-West bed no thank you. Especially when you get older and need the toilet more often. Your build is great. Having owned a van I think I may have done the layout a little different but different strokes for different folks. Stay safe guys.
