Cell Signaling Overview:
Signal transduction is a process of converting extracellular signal into cellular responses. All cells receive and respond to signals from their surroundings. This is accomplished by a variety of signal molecules that are secreted or expressed on the surface of one cell and bind to receptors expressed by other cells, thereby integrating and coordinating the functions of the many individual cells that make up organisms. Each cell is programmed to respond to specific extracellular signal molecules.

Receptors are broadly classified into: a) Cell Surface Receptors
b) Intra-cellular Receptors
a) Cell Surface receptors include:
1) GPCRs(Serpentine or seven pass receptors and are most abundant receptors)
2) Enzyme linked receptors(Receptor Tyrosine kinases, Receptor Serine/Threonine kinases and Tyrosine kinase associated receptors)
3) Ion channel receptors.
b) Intra-cellular Cell receptors are divided into:
1) Cytoplasmic receptors(Receptors for steroids e.g estrogen, testosterone,etc except Eicosanoids)
2) Nuclear receptors(Receptors for Thyroxine and Eicosanoids)
NOTE:
There are certain intra cellular receptors which are structurally similar to the intracellular receptors but they do not have any ligand and such receptors are known as "Orphan receptors".
